अनेनास् तु ककुत्स्थस्य पृथुश् चानेनसः स्मृतः विष्टराश्वः पृथोः पुत्रस् तस्माद् आर्द्रस् त्व् अजायत
From Anenas came Kakutstha, and from Anenas, Prithu is remembered; Prithu's son was Vishtrarashva, from whom Ardra was born.
आर्द्रस् तु युवनाश्वस् तु श्रावस्तस् तत्सुतो द्विजाः जज्ञे श्रावस्तको राजा श्रावस्ती येन निर्मिता
Ardra's son was Yuvanashva, and his son was Shravasta, O brahmins; King Shravastaka was born, by whom Shravasti was founded.
श्रावस्तस्य तु दायादो बृहदश्वो महीपतिः कुवलाश्वः सुतस् तस्य राजा परमधार्मिकः
Shravasti's heir was the great king Brihadashva; his son was Kuvalashva, a king of supreme righteousness.
यः स धुन्धुवधाद् राजा धुन्धुमारत्वम् आगतः
He is the king who, after slaying Dhundhu, attained the title 'Dhundhumara.'
धुन्धोर् वधं महाप्राज्ञ श्रोतुम् इच्छाम तत्त्वतः यद्वधात् कुवलाश्वो ऽसौ धुन्धुमारत्वम् आगतः
O greatly wise one, we wish to hear in truth about the slaying of Dhundhu, and how Kuvalashva, by that slaying, attained the title 'Dhundhumara.'
कुवलाश्वस्य पुत्राणां शतम् उत्तमधन्विनाम् सर्वे विद्यासु निष्णाता बलवन्तो दुरासदाः
Kuvalashva had a hundred sons, excellent archers, all skilled in every science, strong and difficult to overcome.
बभूवुर् धार्मिकाः सर्वे यज्वानो भूरिदक्षिणाः कुवलाश्वं पिता राज्ये बृहदश्वो न्ययोजयत्
All were righteous, performers of sacrifices, and generous with gifts; Brihadashva installed Kuvalashva, his son, in the kingdom.
पुत्रसंक्रामितश्रीस् तु वनं राजा विवेश ह तम् उत्तङ्को ऽथ विप्रर्षिः प्रयान्तं प्रत्यवारयत्
Having transferred his royal fortune to his son, the king entered the forest; then the sage Uttanka stopped him as he was departing.
भवता रक्षणं कार्यं तच् च कर्तुं त्वम् अर्हसि निरुद्विग्नस् तपश् चर्तुं नहि शक्नोमि पार्थिव
You must undertake protection, and you are fit to do so; O king, I cannot practice austerities without anxiety.
ममाश्रमसमीपे वै समेषु मरुधन्वसु समुद्रो वालुकापूर्ण उद्दालक इति स्मृतः
Near my hermitage, in the level Marudhanva region, there is a sand-filled sea, known as Uddalaka.
देवतानाम् अवध्यश् च महाकायो महाबलः अन्तर्भूमिगतस् तत्र वालुकान्तर्हितो महान्
He is invulnerable to the gods, of immense body and great strength, dwelling beneath the earth there, hidden within the sand, vast in form.
राक्षसस्य मधोः पुत्रो धुन्धुर् नाम महासुरः शेते लोकविनाशाय तप आस्थाय दारुणम्
The son of the Rākṣasa Madhu, named Dhundhu, a great demon, lies there, having undertaken fierce austerity for the destruction of the worlds.
संवत्सरस्य पर्यन्ते स निश्वासं विमुञ्चति यदा तदा मही तत्र चलति स्म नराधिप
At the end of the year, O king, when he exhales, then the earth there would tremble.
तस्य निःश्वासवातेन रज उद्धूयते महत् आदित्यपथम् आवृत्य सप्ताहं भूमिकम्पनम्
By the force of his breath, a great cloud of dust is raised, covering the path of the sun, and for seven days the earth quakes.
सविस्फुलिङ्गं साङ्गारं सधूमम् अतिदारुणम् तेन तात न शक्नोमि तस्मिन् स्थातुं स्व आश्रमे
With sparks, with embers, with smoke, exceedingly dreadful—because of this, dear one, I am unable to remain in my own hermitage there.
तं मारय महाकायं लोकानां हितकाम्यया लोकाः स्वस्था भवन्त्य् अद्य तस्मिन् विनिहते त्वया
Slay that great-bodied one for the welfare of the worlds; today, if you destroy him, the worlds will be at peace.
त्वं हि तस्य वधायैकः समर्थः पृथिवीपते विष्णुना च वरो दत्तो मह्यं पूर्वयुगे नृप
For you alone, O lord of earth, are capable of killing him; and a boon was formerly granted to me by Viṣṇu in a previous age, O king.
यस् तं महासुरं रौद्रं हनिष्यति महाबलम् तस्य त्वं वरदानेन तेजश् चाख्यापयिष्यसि
Whoever slays that fierce and mighty great demon, to him, by the granting of that boon, you shall reveal your energy.
नहि धुन्धुर् महातेजास् तेजसाल्पेन शक्यते निर्दग्धुं पृथिवीपाल चिरं युगशतैर् अपि
For Dhundhu, of great brilliance, cannot be consumed by lesser energy, O protector of the earth, not even in a hundred ages.
वीर्यं च सुमहत् तस्य देवैर् अपि दुरासदम् स एवम् उक्तो राजर्षिर् उत्तङ्केन महात्मना कुवलाश्वं सुतं प्रादात् तस्मै धुन्धुनिबर्हणे
His power is immense, difficult even for the gods to overcome. Thus addressed by the great-souled Uttaṅka, the royal sage gave his son Kuvalāśva for the destruction of Dhundhu.
भगवन् न्यस्तशस्त्रो ऽहम् अयं तु तनयो मम भविष्यति द्विजश्रेष्ठ धुन्धुमारो न संशयः
O venerable one, I myself have laid down my weapons, but this son of mine, O best of twice-born, will become the slayer of Dhundhu, without doubt.
स तं व्यादिश्य तनयं राजर्षिर् धुन्धुमारणे जगाम पर्वतायैव नृपतिः संशितव्रतः
Having thus appointed his son to slay Dhundhu, the royal sage, steadfast in his vow, went to the mountain.
कुवलाश्वस् तु पुत्राणां शतेन सह भो द्विजाः प्रायाद् उत्तङ्कसहितो धुन्धोस् तस्य निबर्हणे
But Kuvalāśva, powerful and accompanied by a hundred sons, O twice-born ones, set out with Uttaṅka to destroy Dhundhu.
तम् आविशत् तदा विष्णुस् तेजसा भगवान् प्रभुः उत्तङ्कस्य नियोगाद् वै लोकानां हितकाम्यया
Then the blessed Lord Viṣṇu entered him with his energy, by the command of Uttaṅka, desiring the welfare of the worlds.
तस्मिन् प्रयाते दुर्धर्षे दिवि शब्दो महान् अभूत् एष श्रीमान् अवध्यो ऽद्य धुन्धुमारो भविष्यति
As that unconquerable one departed, a great sound arose in the heavens: 'Today this glorious one, Dhundhumāra, will become invulnerable.'
दिव्यैर् गन्धैश् च माल्यैश् च तं देवाः समवाकिरन् देवदुन्दुभयश् चैव प्रणेदुर् द्विजसत्तमाः
And the gods showered him with divine fragrances and garlands, and the celestial drums resounded, O best of twice-born.
स गत्वा जयतां श्रेष्ठस् तनयैः सह वीर्यवान् समुद्रं खानयाम् आस वालुकान्तरम् अव्ययम्
He, the foremost of the victorious, went forth with his valiant sons and began to dig into the endless sand, O twice-born ones.
तस्य पुत्रैः खनद्भिश् च वालुकान्तर्हितस् तदा धुन्धुर् आसादितो विप्रा दिशम् आवृत्य पश्चिमाम्
Then, O sages, as his sons dug into the sand, Dhundhu, hidden there, was discovered, blocking the western direction.
मुखजेनाग्निना क्रोधाल् लोकान् उद्वर्तयन्न् इव वारि सुस्राव वेगेन महोदधिर् इवोदये
With fire issuing from his mouth out of anger, as if overturning the worlds, he poured forth water with force, like the great ocean at its rise.
सौमस्य मुनिशार्दूला वरोर्मिकलिलो महान् तस्य पुत्रशतं दग्धं त्रिभिर् ऊनं तु रक्षसा
O best of sages, from the great mass of waves and mud, a hundred sons of his were burned by the demon, save three.
