Then the blessed one, pleased, said to them both, 'Choose a boon.' Both asked Agastya, 'O lord of sages, grant us sons.'
The two sons, strongest among all, benefactors of all worlds—having said 'So be it,' the best of sages went to the southern direction.
Then, at some time, Anjana and Adrika, singing, dancing, and laughing, were on the mountain peak.
Vayu and Nirriti, seeing them both smiling, those two gods, their minds overcome by desire, swiftly approached.
May we two, as husband and wife, become the bestowers of boons, O gods. They too replied, 'So be it,' and vanished upon the summit of the mountain.
Thus, Hanuman was born to Anjana and Vayu; and to Adrika and Nirriti was born Adri, the lord of the piśācas.
Again, both of them said, 'By the sage's boon, two sons have been born, but our forms are deformed, our heads marred.'
By the curse of the lord of Shachi, you both must be recognized as such. Then the blessed Vayu and likewise Nirriti spoke.
By bathing and giving gifts at Gautami, the curse will be lifted. Having said this, both, pleased, disappeared right there.
Then Adri, taking Anjana, himself in the form of a piśāca, bathed his brother Hanuman's mother out of affection for him.
In the same way, Hanuman, taking the Ganga, swiftly led Adrika, in the form of a cat, to the bank of the Gautami.
From that time, that sacred place became known as Piśāca and Añjana, where Brahma approached the mountain, bestowing all desires and auspiciousness.
Fifty-three yojanas to the east is Mārjāra, so named; from there, Dhanumanta and Vṛṣākapi.
It is called Phenāsaṅgama, bestower of all desires and auspicious; its true nature and greatness are also described there, O auspicious one.
It is known as Kṣudhātīrtha—listen, O Nārada, with focused mind, as I recount its great merit, bestowing all desires upon men.
Once there was a sage named Kaṇva, devoted to austerity and foremost in Vedic knowledge, who wandered among hermitages, tormented by hunger.
He saw the holy hermitage of Gautama, abundant with food and water, and himself afflicted by hunger, while Gautama was prosperous.
Seeing this disparity, Kaṇva became detached; and Gautama, the best of twice-born, thought, 'I am steadfast in austerity.'
Therefore, though afflicted by hunger and suffering in body, I will not eat in Gautama's dwelling, but will beg in a manner equal to all.
Resolving thus, the wise one thought, 'I shall go to the Gautamī Ganga and obtain wealth,' and went to the sacred Ganga.
Having bathed, purified, and with concentrated mind, he sat upon a seat of kusa grass and praised the Gautamī Ganga and his great distress of hunger.
Salutations to you, O Ganga, remover of supreme suffering; homage to you, O Hunger, cause of all people's distress; homage to you, O auspicious one, born from the matted locks of Maheshana; homage to you, who escaped from the jaws of great death.
Of those with virtuous souls, you are the form of peace; of the wicked, you are the form of wrath. In the form of a river, you remove all heat and sin from everyone.
In the form of hunger, you bestow suffering and sin upon all. Salutations to you, O goddess, who brings auspiciousness, who destroys sin, who grants peace, and who removes poverty.
As he thus praised, before him appeared two forms: one enchanting, like the Ganges, and the other terrifying in appearance. Again, with joined palms and after bowing, the best of twice-born spoke.
O source of all auspiciousness, O Brāhmī, O auspicious Māheśvarī, O Vaiṣṇavī, O three-eyed goddess, O Godāvarī, salutations to you.
O Godāvarī, born from the matted locks of Tryambaka, destroyer of Gautama’s sin, who flows in seven streams to the ocean, salutations to you.
O goddess, destroyer of dharma, desire, and wealth for those who commit all sins; full of sorrow and greed, O hunger, salutations to you again and again.
Hearing the words of Kaṇva, they joyfully spoke to the twice-born.
Speak your desire, O blessed one; choose boons, O virtuous one.
