प्रोक्षितं तद् धयं नीत्वा ते रसातलम् आगमन् राक्षसान् मायया युक्तान् नैवापश्यन्त सागराः
Taking the consecrated horse, they went to the netherworld; but the Sagaras did not see the demons, who were endowed with illusion.
न दृष्ट्वा ते हयं पुत्राः सगरस्य बलीयसः इतश् चेतश् चरन्तस् ते नैवापश्यन् हयं तदा
Not finding the horse, the mighty Sagara's sons wandered here and there, but still did not see the horse at that time.
देवलोकं तदा जग्मुः पर्वतांश् च सरांसि च वनानि च विचिन्वन्तो नैवापश्यन् हयं तदा
At that time, they went to the world of the gods, and searched the mountains, lakes, and forests, but they did not find the horse.
कृतस्वस्त्ययनो राजा ऋत्विग्भिः कृतमङ्गलः अदृष्ट्वा तु पशुं रम्यं राजा चिन्ताम् उपेयिवान्
The king, having completed the auspicious rites and received blessings from the priests, became anxious because he did not see the beautiful sacrificial animal.
अटन्तः सागराः सर्वे देवलोकम् उपागमन् हयं तम् अनुचिन्वन्तस् तत्रापि न हयो ऽभवत्
All the oceans wandered and reached the world of the gods, searching for that horse, but even there the horse was not found.
ततो महीं समाजग्मुः पर्वतांश् च वनानि च तत्रापि च हयं नैव दृष्टवन्तो नृपात्मजाः
Then they returned to the earth, to the mountains and forests, but even there the sons of the king did not see the horse.
एतस्मिन्न् अन्तरे तत्र दैवी वाग् अभवत् तदा रसातले हयो बद्ध आस्ते नान्यत्र सागराः
At that moment, a divine voice spoke: 'The horse is bound in the netherworld, not elsewhere, O Oceans.'
इति श्रुत्वा ततो वाक्यं गन्तुकामा रसातलम् अखनन् पृथिवीं सर्वां परितः सागरास् ततः
Hearing this statement, the Oceans, desiring to go to the netherworld, dug up the entire earth all around.
ते क्षुधार्ता मृदं शुष्कां भक्षयन्तस् त्व् अहर्निशम् न्यखनंश् चापि जग्मुश् च सत्वरास् ते रसातलम्
Hungry, they ate dry earth day and night, and digging, they quickly reached the netherworld.
तान् आगतान् भूपसुतान् सागरान् बलिनः कृतीन् श्रुत्वा रक्षांसि संत्रस्ता व्यगमन् कपिलान्तिकम्
Hearing that the mighty and accomplished sons of the king, the Oceans, had arrived, the terrified demons fled to Kapila.
कपिलो ऽपि महाप्राज्ञस् तत्र शेते रसातले पुरा च साधितं तेन देवानां कार्यम् उत्तमम्
Kapila, the great sage, was lying there in the netherworld; in ancient times, he had accomplished an excellent task for the gods.
विनिद्रेण ततः श्रान्तः सिद्धे कार्ये सुरान् प्रति अब्रवीत् कपिलः श्रीमान् निद्रास्थानं प्रयच्छथ
Then, weary and sleepless after completing the gods' task, the illustrious Kapila said to the gods, 'Grant me a place to sleep.'
रसातलं ददुस् तस्मै पुनर् आह सुरान् मुनिः यो माम् उत्थापयेन् मन्दो भस्मी भूयाच् च सत्वरम्
They gave him the netherworld, and the sage further said to the gods, 'Whoever foolishly awakens me should quickly be reduced to ashes.'
ततः शये तलगतो नो चेन् न स्वप्न एव हि तथेत्य् उक्तः सुरगणैस् तत्र शेते रसातले
Then, lying there in the netherworld, he said, 'If I am not asleep, it is only as if in a dream.' Thus spoken by the hosts of gods, he lay there in the netherworld.
तस्य प्रभावं ते ज्ञात्वा राक्षसा मायया युताः सागराणां च सर्वेषां वधोपायं प्रचक्रिरे
Knowing his power, the demons, skilled in illusion, devised a means to destroy all the Oceans.
विना युद्धेन ते भीता राक्षसाः सत्वरास् तदा आगत्य यत्र स मुनिः कपिलः कोपनो महान्
Fearing battle, the demons, acting quickly, went to where the great and wrathful sage Kapila was.
शिरोदेशे हयं ते वै बद्ध्वाथ त्वरयान्विताः दूरे स्थित्वा मौनिनश् च प्रेक्षन्तः किं भवेद् इति
They bound the horse at his head, and, filled with haste, stood at a distance, silently watching to see what would happen.
ततस् तु सागराः सर्वे निर्विशन्तो रसातलम् ददृशुस् ते हयं बद्धं शयानं पुरुषं तथा
Then all the Oceans, entering the netherworld, saw the horse bound and a man lying there.
तं मेनिरे च हर्तारं क्रतुहन्तारम् एव च एनं हत्वा महापापं नयामो ऽश्वं नृपान्तिकम्
They thought him to be the thief and the destroyer of the sacrifice, and said, 'Having slain this great sinner, let us take the horse to the king.'
केचिद् ऊचुः पशुं बद्धं नयामो ऽनेन किं फलम् तदाहुर् अपरे शूरा राजानः शासका वयम्
Some said, 'Let us take the bound animal; what is the use of this?' Others, brave and royal, said, 'We are the rulers.'
उत्थाप्यैनं महापापं हन्मः क्षात्रेण वर्चसा ते तं जघ्नुर् मुनिं पादैर् ब्रुवन्तो निष्ठुराणि च
Raising up that great sinner, they said harsh words and struck the sage with their feet, boasting of their kshatriya power.
ततः कोपेन महता कपिलो मुनिसत्तमः सागरान् ईक्षयाम् आस तान् कोपाद् भस्मसात् करोत्
Then, filled with great anger, the eminent sage Kapila gazed at them, and out of wrath turned them to ashes.
जज्वलुस् ते ततस् तत्र सागराः सर्व एव हि तत् तु सर्वं न जानाति दीक्षितः सगरो नृपः
Thereupon, all those Sagaras were consumed in flames on the spot; but King Sagara, being consecrated, knew nothing of this.
नारदः कथयाम् आस सगराय महात्मने कपिलस्य तु संस्थानं हयस्यापि तु संस्थितिम्
Nārada then told the great-souled Sagara about the state of Kapila and also the fate of the horse.
राक्षसानां तु विकृतिं सागराणां च नाशनम् ततश् चिन्तापरो राजा कर्तव्यं नावबुध्यत
He described the monstrous acts of the rākṣasas and the destruction of the Sagaras; then the king, overwhelmed with anxiety, could not discern what should be done.
अपरो ऽपि सुतश् चासीद् असमञ्जा इति श्रुतः स तु बालांस् तथा पौरान् मौर्ख्यात् क्षिपति चाम्भसि
He had another son, known as Asamañja, who, out of folly, used to throw children of the citizens into the water.
सगरो ऽप्य् अथ विज्ञप्तः पौरैः संमिलितैस् तदा दुर्नयं तस्य तं ज्ञात्वा ततः क्रुद्धो ऽब्रवीन् नृपः
Then Sagara, informed by the assembled citizens of his son's wickedness, became angry and spoke.
स्वान् अमात्यांस् तदा राजा देशत्यागं करोत्व् अयम् असमञ्जाः क्षत्रधर्मत्यागी वै बालघातकः
The king then ordered his ministers: 'Let this Asamañja be exiled; he has abandoned the kshatriya code and is a slayer of children.'
सगरस्य तु तद् वाक्यं श्रुत्वामात्यास् त्वरान्विताः तत्यजुर् नृपतेः पुत्रम् असमञ्जा गतो वनम्
Hearing the king's command, the ministers, acting swiftly, banished Asamañja, who then went to the forest.
सागरा ब्रह्मशापेन नष्टाः सर्वे रसातले एको ऽपि च वनं प्राप्त इदानीं का गतिर् मम
All the Sagaras were destroyed in the netherworld by Brahmā's curse; now, with only one left who has gone to the forest, what path remains for me?
