अनेन तव धर्मेण प्रश्रयेण दमेन च सत्येन चैव सुश्रोणि प्रीतौ स्वो वरवर्णिनि
By this righteousness of yours, by your humility, by your self-restraint, and by your truthfulness, O fair-hipped one, O woman of excellent complexion, we are pleased.
आवयोस् त्वं महाभागे ख्यातिं कन्येति यास्यसि
O greatly fortunate one, you will be renowned as a maiden on our behalf.
मनोर् वंशकरः पुत्रस् त्वम् एव च भविष्यसि सुद्युम्न इति विख्यातस् त्रिषु लोकेषु शोभने
You will also become the son who continues Manu's lineage, and you will be known as Sudyumna in the three worlds, O beautiful one.
जगत्प्रियो धर्मशीलो मनोर् वंशविवर्धनः निवृत्ता सा तु तच् छ्रुत्वा गच्छन्ती पितुर् अन्तिकात्
Beloved by the world, righteous, and increaser of Manu's line—having heard this, she departed from her father's presence.
बुधेनान्तरम् आसाद्य मैथुनायोपमन्त्रिता सोमपुत्राद् बुधाद् विप्रास् तस्यां जज्ञे पुरूरवाः
Having met Budha, son of Soma, she was invited to union; from Budha, O twice-born, Purūravas was born from her.
जनयित्वा ततः सा तम् इला सुद्युम्नतां गता सुद्युम्नस्य तु दायादास् त्रयः परमधार्मिकाः
After giving birth to him, Ilā became Sudyumna; Sudyumna had three exceedingly righteous heirs.
उत्कलश् च गयश् चैव विनताश्वश् च भो द्विजाः उत्कलस्योत्कला विप्रा विनताश्वस्य पश्चिमाः
O twice-born, they were Utkala, Gaya, and Vinatāśva; the Utkalas are the descendants of Utkala, and the westerners are the descendants of Vinatāśva.
दिक् पूर्वा मुनिशार्दूला गयस्य तु गया स्मृता प्रविष्टे तु मनौ विप्रा दिवाकरम् अरिंदमम्
O tiger among sages, the eastern region is of Utkala; Gaya's descendants are known as the Gayas. When Manu entered, O twice-born, the subduer of enemies, Divākara—
दशधा तत् पुनः क्षत्रम् अकरोत् पृथिवीम् इमाम् इक्ष्वाकुर् ज्येष्ठदायादो मध्यदेशम् अवाप्तवान्
He again divided this earth into ten parts for the kṣatriyas; Ikṣvāku, the eldest heir, obtained the central region.
कन्याभावात् तु सुद्युम्नो नैतद् राज्यम् अवाप्तवान् वसिष्ठवचनात् त्व् आसीत् प्रतिष्ठाने महात्मनः
Because Sudyumna became a maiden, he did not obtain that kingdom; by the word of Vasiṣṭha, the great-souled one resided at Pratiṣṭhāna.
प्रतिष्ठा धर्मराजस्य सुद्युम्नस्य द्विजोत्तमाः तत् पुरूरवसे प्रादाद् राज्यं प्राप्य महायशाः
O best of twice-born, Pratiṣṭhā was the city of the righteous king Sudyumna; having obtained the kingdom, the illustrious one gave it to Purūravas.
मानवेयो मुनिश्रेष्ठाः स्त्रीपुंसोर् लक्षणैर् युतः धृतवांस् ताम् इलेत्य् एवं सुद्युम्नेति च विश्रुतः
O best of sages, the descendant of Manu, endowed with the characteristics of both woman and man, bore her as Ilā, and is also famed as Sudyumna.
नारिष्यन्ताः शकाः पुत्रा नाभागस्य तु भो द्विजाः अम्बरीषो ऽभवत् पुत्रः पार्थिवर्षभसत्तमः
O twice-born, the Śakas, sons of Nāriṣyantā, did not become kṣatriyas; Nābhāga's son was Ambarīṣa, the best among royal bulls.
धृष्टस्य धार्ष्टकं क्षत्रं रणदृप्तं बभूव ह करूषस्य च कारूषाः क्षत्रिया युद्धदुर्मदाः
From Dhṛṣṭa came the Dhārṣṭaka kṣatriyas, proud in battle; and from Karūṣa came the Kārūṣa kṣatriyas, arrogant in war.
नाभागधृष्टपुत्राश् च क्षत्रिया वैश्यतां गताः प्रांशोर् एको ऽभवत् पुत्रः प्रजापतिर् इति स्मृतः
The sons of Nābhāga and Dhṛṣṭa became Kṣatriyas who attained the status of Vaiśyas; among them, one son of Prāṃśu became known as Prajāpati.
नरिष्यन्तस्य दायादो राजा दण्डधरो यमः शर्यातेर् मिथुनं त्व् आसीद् आनर्तो नाम विश्रुतः
The heir of Nariṣyanta was the king Daṇḍadhara, Yama; and Śaryāti had a pair of children, the renowned Ānarta.
पुत्रः कन्या सुकन्या च या पत्नी च्यवनस्य ह आनर्तस्य तु दायादो रैवो नाम महाद्युतिः
He had a son and a daughter, Sukanyā, who became the wife of Cyavana; and the heir of Ānarta was the illustrious Raiva.
आनर्तविषयश् चैव पुरी चास्य कुशस्थली रैवस्य रैवतः पुत्रः ककुद्मी नाम धार्मिकः
The realm of Ānarta and his city was Kuśasthalī; Raiva's son was the righteous Kakudmī.
ज्येष्ठः पुत्रः स तस्यासीद् राज्यं प्राप्य कुशस्थलीम् स कन्यासहितः श्रुत्वा गान्धर्वं ब्रह्मणो ऽन्तिके
He was the eldest son, and having obtained the kingdom of Kuśasthalī, together with his daughter, he heard the Gandharva music in the presence of Brahmā.
मुहूर्तभूतं देवस्य तस्थौ बहुयुगं द्विजाः आजगाम स चैवाथ स्वां पुरीं यादवैर् वृताम्
For what was but a moment to the god, he remained for many ages, O twice-born; then he returned to his own city, which was occupied by the Yādavas.
कृतां द्वारवतीं नाम बहुद्वारां मनोरमाम् भोजवृष्ण्यन्धकैर् गुप्तां वसुदेवपुरोगमैः
There, the city called Dvāravatī was built, beautiful with many gates, protected by the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas, with Vasudeva at their head.
तत्रैव रैवतो ज्ञात्वा यथातत्त्वं द्विजोत्तमाः कन्यां तां बलदेवाय सुभद्रां नाम रेवतीम्
There, having understood the truth, O best of Brahmins, Raivata gave his daughter Revati, also called Subhadrā, to Baladeva.
दत्त्वा जगाम शिखरं मेरोस् तपसि संस्थितः रेमे रामो ऽपि धर्मात्मा रेवत्या सहितः सुखी
Having given her, he went to the summit of Meru to practice austerity; and Rāma, righteous in soul, rejoiced happily with Revati.
कथं बहुयुगे काले समतीते महामते न जरा रेवतीं प्राप्ता रैवतं च ककुद्मिनम्
How, O wise one, after so many ages had passed, did old age not overtake Revati and Raivata Kakudmin?
मेरुं गतस्य वा तस्य शर्यातेः संततिः कथम् स्थिता पृथिव्याम् अद्यापि श्रोतुम् इच्छाम तत्त्वतः
How did the lineage of Śaryāti remain on earth, when he had gone to Meru? We wish to hear the truth of this.
न जरा क्षुत्पिपासा वा न मृत्युर् मुनिसत्तमाः ऋतुचक्रं प्रभवति ब्रह्मलोके सदानघाः ककुद्मिनः स्वर्लोकं तु रैवतस्य गतस्य ह
There is no old age, hunger, or thirst, nor death, O best of sages; the cycle of seasons does not prevail in Brahmā's world, where the sinless Kakudmin resides; but Raivata went to the heavenly world.
हृता पुण्यजनैर् विप्रा राक्षसैः सा कुशस्थली तस्य भ्रातृशतं त्व् आसीद् धार्मिकस्य महात्मनः
That Kuśasthalī was taken, O Brahmins, by the virtuous and by Rākṣasas; that righteous great soul had a hundred brothers.
तद् वध्यमानं रक्षोभिर् दिशः प्राक्रामद् अच्युताः विद्रुतस्य च विप्रेन्द्रास् तस्य भ्रातृशतस्य वै
When they were being slain by the Rākṣasas, the unconquered ones fled in all directions; and, O foremost of Brahmins, the hundred brothers were scattered.
अन्ववायस् तु सुमहांस् तत्र तत्र द्विजोत्तमाः तेषां ह्य् एते मुनिश्रेष्ठाः शर्याता इति विश्रुताः
Their great lineage continued here and there, O best of Brahmins; these are the ones renowned as the Śaryātas, O best of sages.
क्षत्रिया गुणसंपन्ना दिक्षु सर्वासु विश्रुताः शर्वशः सर्वगहनं प्रविष्टास् ते महौजसः
Those Kṣatriyas, endowed with virtues, became renowned in all directions; all of them, possessed of great energy, entered every region.
