The king of Dharma delighted these beings through righteousness; by that virtuous deed, he attained supreme splendor.

When that period arrives, Manu Savarni will be; even today, he continually practices austerity on the summit of Meru.

His brother Shani became a planet; and Tvashtar, by his brilliance, fashioned the discus of Vishnu.

The second son of that Manu, his brother Shani, also attained the status of a planet, honored by all the worlds.
O best of men, whoever hears this account of the birth of the gods, if beset by trouble, will be freed and will attain great fame.
The sons of Manu Vaivasvata were nine, equal to him: Ikshvaku, Nabhaga, Dhrishta, and Sharyati as well.
Narisyanta was the sixth, Pramshu and Rishta the seventh, Karusha and Prishadhra—these nine, O best of sages.
Desiring sons, Manu, the Prajapati of great wisdom, performed a sacrifice to Mitra and Varuna, O Brahmins, in ancient times.
While many sons had not yet been born, O twice-born, and while that sacrifice was ongoing, O best of Brahmins—
In the portion of Mitra and Varuna, Manu offered an oblation; there appeared a woman adorned with divine garments and ornaments.
With a divine form, Ila was born, so it is heard; Manu, the wielder of the staff, then addressed her as 'Ila.'
He said, 'Follow me, O blessed one.' Ila replied to him with these words, righteous and fitting, to the Prajapati who desired a son.
I was born from the portion of Mitra and Varuṇa, best among speakers; I will go to them—do not make me one who has abandoned righteousness.
Having spoken thus to Manu, the god, Ilā, of lovely form, approached Mitra and Varuṇa, and with joined palms spoke these words.
I am born from your portion, O gods; what shall I do for you? Manu has also told me: 'Follow me.'
Then Mitra and Varuṇa, best of twice-born, said to Ilā, who spoke thus, who was virtuous and devoted to righteousness.

By this righteousness of yours, by your humility, by your self-restraint, and by your truthfulness, O fair-hipped one, O woman of excellent complexion, we are pleased.
O greatly fortunate one, you will be renowned as a maiden on our behalf.

You will also become the son who continues Manu's lineage, and you will be known as Sudyumna in the three worlds, O beautiful one.

Beloved by the world, righteous, and increaser of Manu's line—having heard this, she departed from her father's presence.
Having met Budha, son of Soma, she was invited to union; from Budha, O twice-born, Purūravas was born from her.
After giving birth to him, Ilā became Sudyumna; Sudyumna had three exceedingly righteous heirs.
O twice-born, they were Utkala, Gaya, and Vinatāśva; the Utkalas are the descendants of Utkala, and the westerners are the descendants of Vinatāśva.
O tiger among sages, the eastern region is of Utkala; Gaya's descendants are known as the Gayas. When Manu entered, O twice-born, the subduer of enemies, Divākara—
He again divided this earth into ten parts for the kṣatriyas; Ikṣvāku, the eldest heir, obtained the central region.
Because Sudyumna became a maiden, he did not obtain that kingdom; by the word of Vasiṣṭha, the great-souled one resided at Pratiṣṭhāna.
