गायत्रीं पावनीं देवीं मनसा वेदमातरम् सर्वपापहरां पुण्यां जपेद् अष्टोत्तरं शतम्
He should mentally recite the purifying Gāyatrī, the divine mother of the Vedas, which removes all sin and is sacred, one hundred and eight times.
पुण्यांश् च सौरमन्त्रांश् च श्रद्धया सुसमाहितः त्रिः प्रदक्षिणम् आवृत्य भास्करं प्रणमेत् ततः
He should, with faith and full concentration, recite the sacred solar mantras, circumambulate the sun three times, and then bow to him.
वेदोक्तं त्रिषु वर्णेषु स्नानं जाप्यम् उदाहृतम् स्त्रीशूद्रयोः स्नानजाप्यं वेदोक्तविधिवर्जितम्
The bathing and recitation prescribed in the Vedas are declared for the three classes; for women and Śūdras, the bathing and recitation are without the Vedic prescribed method.
ततो गच्छेद् गृहं मौनी पूजयेत् पुरुषोत्तमम् प्रक्षाल्य हस्तौ पादौ च उपस्पृश्य यथाविधि
Then, silent, he should go home, worship Puruṣottama, wash his hands and feet, and touch water as prescribed.
घृतेन स्नापयेद् देवं क्षीरेण तदनन्तरम् मधुगन्धोदकेनैव तीर्थचन्दनवारिणा
One should bathe the deity with ghee, then with milk, and then with water scented with honey, and with water mixed with sacred sandalwood.
ततो वस्त्रयुगं श्रेष्ठं भक्त्या तं परिधापयेत् चन्दनागरुकर्पूरैः कुङ्कुमेन विलेपयेत्
After that, with devotion, one should clothe Him in the finest pair of garments and anoint Him with sandalwood, agaru, camphor, and kuṅkuma.
पूजयेत् परया भक्त्या पद्मैश् च पुरुषोत्तमम् अन्यैश् च वैष्णवैः पुष्पैर् अर्चयेन् मल्लिकादिभिः
With supreme devotion, one should worship Puruṣottama with lotuses and other Vaiṣṇava flowers, and honor Him with jasmine and similar blossoms.
संपूज्यैवं जगन्नाथं भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं हरिम् धूपं चागुरुसंयुक्तं दहेद् देवस्य चाग्रतः
Having thus worshipped Jagannātha Hari, the bestower of enjoyment and liberation, one should burn incense mixed with agaru before the deity.
गुग्गुलं च मुनिश्रेष्ठा दहेद् गन्धसमन्वितम् दीपं प्रज्वालयेद् भक्त्या यथाशक्त्या घृतेन वै
O best of sages, one should also burn guggulu mixed with fragrant substances, and light a lamp with devotion, using ghee as one is able.
अन्यांश् च दीपकान् दद्याद् द्वादशैव समाहितः घृतेन च मुनिश्रेष्ठास् तिलतैलेन वा पुनः
With concentration, one should offer twelve other lamps, using ghee or, O best of sages, again with sesame oil.
नैवेद्ये पायसापूपशष्कुलीवटकं तथा मोदकं फाणितं वाल्पं फलानि च निवेदयेत्
For the food offering, one should present pāyasa, apūpa, śaṣkulī, vaṭaka, modaka, a little phāṇita, and fruits as well.
एवं पञ्चोपचारेण संपूज्य पुरुषोत्तमम् नमः पुरुषोत्तमायेति जपेद् अष्टोत्तरं शतम्
Thus, having worshipped Puruṣottama with these five offerings, one should recite one hundred and eight times: 'Salutations to Puruṣottama.'
ततः प्रसादयेद् देवं भक्त्या तं पुरुषोत्तमम् नमस् ते सर्वलोकेश भक्तानाम् अभयप्रद
Then, with devotion, one should propitiate Puruṣottama, saying: 'Salutations to you, Lord of all worlds, giver of fearlessness to devotees.'
संसारसागरे मग्नं त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम यास् ते मया कृता यात्रा द्वादशैव जगत्पते
O Puruṣottama, save me who am submerged in the ocean of worldly existence; the twelve pilgrimages I have performed, O Lord of the universe—
प्रसादात् तव गोविन्द संपूर्णास् ता भवन्तु मे एवं प्रसाद्य तं देवं दण्डवत् प्रणिपत्य च
By your grace, O Govinda, may these be fulfilled for me. Having thus propitiated the deity, one should bow down in full prostration.
ततो ऽर्चयेद् गुरुं भक्त्या पुष्पवस्त्रानुलेपनैः नानयोर् अन्तरं यस्माद् विद्यते मुनिसत्तमाः
Then, with devotion, one should worship the guru with flowers, garments, and ointments, for, O best of sages, there is no difference between the two.
देवस्योपरि कुर्वीत श्रद्धया सुसमाहितः नानापुष्पैर् मुनिश्रेष्ठा विचित्रं पुष्पमण्डपम्
With faith and full concentration, O best of sages, one should construct a beautiful pavilion of various flowers above the deity.
कृत्वावधारणं पश्चाज् जागरं कारयेन् निशि कथां च वासुदेवस्य गीतिकां चापि कारयेत्
After making this arrangement, one should keep vigil at night, narrating stories and singing songs about Vāsudeva.
ध्यायन् पठन् स्तुवन् देवं प्रणयेद् रजनीं बुधः ततः प्रभाते विमले द्वादश्यां द्वादशैव तु
A wise person should spend the night meditating, reciting, and praising the deity; then, in the pure morning of the twelfth day, indeed—
निमन्त्रयेद् व्रतस्नातान् ब्राह्मणान् वेदपारगान् इतिहासपुराणज्ञाञ् श्रोत्रियान् संयतेन्द्रियान्
One should invite brāhmaṇas who have bathed for the vow, who are learned in the Vedas, who know history and Purāṇas, who are śrotriyas, and who have controlled their senses.
स्नात्वा सम्यग् विधानेन धौतवासा जितेन्द्रियः स्नापयेत् पूर्ववत् तत्र पूजयेत् पुरुषोत्तमम्
Having bathed properly according to the rules, wearing clean garments and with senses subdued, one should perform the bathing as before and worship Puruṣottama there.
गन्धैः पुष्पैर् उपहारैर् नैवेद्यैर् दीपकैस् तथा उपचारैर् बहुविधैः प्रणिपातैः प्रदक्षिणैः
With fragrances, flowers, offerings, food, lamps, and many kinds of services, with prostrations and circumambulations, one should honor Him.
जाप्यैः स्तुतिनमस्कारैर् गीतवाद्यैर् मनोहरैः संपूज्यैवं जगन्नाथं ब्राह्मणान् पूजयेत् ततः
Having worshipped the Lord of the Universe with recitations, hymns, salutations, and delightful songs and instruments, one should then honor the Brahmins.
द्वादशैव तु गास् तेभ्यो दत्त्वा कनकम् एव च छत्त्रोपानद्युगं चैव श्रद्धाभक्तिसमन्वितः
With faith and devotion, one should give them twelve cows, gold, and also a pair of umbrella and footwear.
भक्त्या तु सधनं तेभ्यो दद्याद् वस्त्रादिकं द्विजाः सद्भावेन तु गोविन्दस् तोष्यते पूजितो यतः
With devotion, one should give them wealth, garments, and other items; for when Brahmins are worshipped with sincerity, Govinda is pleased.
आचार्याय ततो दद्याद् गोवस्त्रं कनकं तथा छत्त्रोपानद्युगं चान्यत् कांस्यपात्रं च भक्तितः
Then, with devotion, one should give the teacher a cow, a garment, gold, another pair of umbrella and footwear, and a bronze vessel.
ततस् तान् भोजयेद् विप्रान् भोज्यं पायसपूर्वकम् पक्वान्नं भक्ष्यभोज्यं च गुडसर्पिःसमन्वितम्
After that, one should feed the Brahmins with food beginning with sweet rice, cooked grains, and various edibles mixed with jaggery and ghee.
ततस् तान् अन्नतृप्तांश् च ब्राह्मणान् स्वस्थमानसान् द्वादशैवोदकुम्भांश् च दद्यात् तेभ्यः समोदकान्
Then, when the Brahmins are satisfied with food and their minds are at ease, one should give them twelve water pots filled with water.
दक्षिणां च यथाशक्त्या दद्यात् तेभ्यो विमत्सरः कुम्भं च दक्षिणां चैव आचार्याय निवेदयेत्
One should also give them gifts according to one's ability, without envy, and present a water pot and a gift to the teacher.
एवं संपूज्य तान् विप्रान् गुरुं ज्ञानप्रदायकम् पूजयेत् परया भक्त्या विष्णुतुल्यं द्विजोत्तमाः
Having thus worshipped those Brahmins, one should honor the guru, the giver of knowledge, with supreme devotion, as one would honor Vishnu, O best of twice-born.
