The radiance of Vivasvan was always excessive, by which the son of Kashyapa scorched the three worlds.
O Brahmins, the best among those who burn, the sun begot three children from Sanjna: one daughter and two sons, the lords of creatures.
Manu, the son of Vivasvat, was formerly known as Shraddhadeva, the lord of creatures; Yama and Yamuna, the twins, were also born.
Seeing the dark complexion of Vivasvat, Sanjna, unable to endure it, created her own likeness, identical in form, as her shadow.
That Sanjna, composed of illusion, brought forth Chhaya from herself; with joined palms and bowed in respect, Chhaya approached Sanjna, O best of twice-born.
She said, 'What should I do? Tell me, O fair-smiling one. I stand here at your command; instruct me, O beautiful one.'
'I will go, may good befall you, to my father's own house. You alone must remain in my house without fear.'
'These two boys and this slender-waisted girl are mine; you must care for them, but never reveal this to the lord at any time.'
'O goddess, until you are seized by the hair or cursed, I will never disclose this. Salutations to you; go, O goddess, as you please.'
Having thus instructed Savarna, and receiving her assent, Sanjna, feeling ashamed and austere, went to the presence of Tvashtar.
Arriving near her father, the auspicious one was repeatedly rebuked by him, being told again and again to return to her husband.
Becoming a mare and concealing her form, the blameless one went north to the land of the Kurus and grazed on grass there.
Thinking that this was his second wife, the Sun then begot a son equal to himself.
The lord said, 'He is like the elder Manu.' Thus, he became known by the name Savarni.
The second son born to her is to be known as Shani; Sanjna, O twice-born, was then the mother of her own son.
She showed greater affection for him than for her previous children; Manu accepted this, but Yama did not.
Out of anger and childishness, Yama, son of Vivasvat, threatened Sanjna with his foot, unaware of the consequences.
Then, in great anger, Savarni's mother cursed him, saying, 'May your foot fall off,' being deeply distressed.
Yama, greatly agitated by fear of the curse and troubled by Sanjna's words, reported everything to his father with joined palms.
He said to his father, 'May this curse be lifted.' The twice-born replied, 'One must act with affection towards all children, as a mother does.'
Here, having cast us aside, Vivasvat now seeks to adorn her; my foot was raised against her, but it was not brought down upon her body.
Whether from childishness, or from greed, or from delusion, you ought to forgive this, O Lord of the world; I have been cursed by my mother, O best of the blazing ones, but by your grace my foot will not fall, O protector of cows.
Without doubt, my son, there is a great reason here for the anger that entered you, who know righteousness and speak the truth.
This cannot be made false, your mother's words; worms will take your flesh and go to the earth.
Thus your mother's words will come true; but by the removal of the curse, you too will be protected.
And the Sun said to Saṃjñā: 'Why, among your children who are equal, do you show greater affection to one?'
She, seeking to avoid that, did not reveal it to Vivasvat; and he, collecting himself through yoga, perceived the truth.
Desiring to curse her, the blessed one did not curse her, O best of sages; but he seized her by the hair, O best of sages.
Then she told Vivasvat everything as it had happened; and Vivasvat, hearing this, angrily approached Tvaṣṭṛ.
Seeing him, as was proper, and having worshipped the blazing one, she, wishing to soothe him as he was intent on burning with anger, began to conciliate him.
