पूर्णे युगसहस्रे तु कल्पो निःशेष उच्यते तत्र भूतानि सर्वाणि दग्धान्य् आदित्यरश्मिभिः
When a thousand ages are completed, the Kalpa is said to be entirely finished; then all beings are burned by the rays of the sun.
ब्रह्माणम् अग्रतः कृत्वा सहादित्यगणैर् द्विजाः प्रविशन्ति सुरश्रेष्ठं हरिनारायणं प्रभुम्
Having placed Brahma at the forefront, together with the hosts of Adityas, O Brahmins, they enter the supreme lord Hari-Narayana, the best among the gods.
स्रष्टारं सर्वभूतानां कल्पान्तेषु पुनः पुनः अव्यक्तः शाश्वतो देवस् तस्य सर्वम् इदं जगत्
The creator of all beings, at the end of each Kalpa, again and again, is the unmanifest, eternal god; this entire world belongs to him.
अत्र वः कीर्तयिष्यामि मनोर् वैवस्वतस्य वै विसर्गं मुनिशार्दूलाः सांप्रतस्य महाद्युतेः
Here, O tiger among sages, I will recount to you the creation of Manu Vaivasvata, the illustrious one of the present time.
अत्र वंशप्रसङ्गेन कथ्यमानं पुरातनम् यत्रोत्पन्नो महात्मा स हरिर् वृष्णिकुले प्रभुः
Here, in connection with the lineage, the ancient account is narrated, wherein the great soul Hari, the lord, was born in the Vrishni clan.
विवस्वान् कश्यपाज् जज्ञे दाक्षायण्यां द्विजोत्तमाः तस्य भार्याभवत् संज्ञा त्वाष्ट्री देवी विवस्वतः
Vivasvan was born from Kashyapa and Daksha's daughter, O best of Brahmins; his wife was Sanjna, the divine daughter of Tvashta.
सुरेश्वरीति विख्याता त्रिषु लोकेषु भाविनी सा वै भार्या भगवतो मार्तण्डस्य महात्मनः
She, known as Sureshvari in the three worlds, was destined to be the wife of the illustrious Martanda, the great soul.
भर्तृरूपेण नातुष्यद् रूपयौवनशालिनी संज्ञा नाम सुतपसा सुदीप्तेन समन्विता
Though endowed with beauty and youth, she was not satisfied with her husband’s form; Sanjna, so named, was possessed of great austerity and brilliance.
आदित्यस्य हि तद् रूपं मण्डलस्य सुतेजसा गात्रेषु परिदग्धं वै नातिकान्तम् इवाभवत्
Indeed, the form of the sun, with its intense brilliance, was scorched upon her limbs, and became not very pleasing.
न खल्व् अयं मृतो ऽण्डस्य इति स्नेहाद् अभाषत अजानन् काश्यपस् तस्मान् मार्तण्ड इति चोच्यते
Out of affection, he said, 'This is not dead from the egg'; not knowing, Kashyapa thus called him Martanda.
तेजस् त्व् अभ्यधिकं तस्य नित्यम् एव विवस्वतः येनातितापयाम् आस त्रींल् लोकान् कश्यपात्मजः
The radiance of Vivasvan was always excessive, by which the son of Kashyapa scorched the three worlds.
त्रीण्य् अपत्यानि भो विप्राः संज्ञायां तपतां वरः आदित्यो जनयाम् आस कन्यां द्वौ च प्रजापती
O Brahmins, the best among those who burn, the sun begot three children from Sanjna: one daughter and two sons, the lords of creatures.
मनुर् वैवस्वतः पूर्वं श्राद्धदेवः प्रजापतिः यमश् च यमुना चैव यमजौ संबभूवतुः
Manu, the son of Vivasvat, was formerly known as Shraddhadeva, the lord of creatures; Yama and Yamuna, the twins, were also born.
श्यामवर्णं तु तद् रूपं संज्ञा दृष्ट्वा विवस्वतः असहन्ती तु स्वां छायां सवर्णां निर्ममे ततः
Seeing the dark complexion of Vivasvat, Sanjna, unable to endure it, created her own likeness, identical in form, as her shadow.
मायामयी तु सा संज्ञा तस्यां छायासमुत्थिताम् प्राञ्जलिः प्रणता भूत्वा छाया संज्ञां द्विजोत्तमाः
That Sanjna, composed of illusion, brought forth Chhaya from herself; with joined palms and bowed in respect, Chhaya approached Sanjna, O best of twice-born.
उवाच किं मया कार्यं कथयस्व शुचिस्मिते स्थितास्मि तव निर्देशे शाधि मां वरवर्णिनि
She said, 'What should I do? Tell me, O fair-smiling one. I stand here at your command; instruct me, O beautiful one.'
अहं यास्यामि भद्रं ते स्वम् एव भवनं पितुः त्वयैव भवने मह्यं वस्तव्यं निर्विशङ्कया
'I will go, may good befall you, to my father's own house. You alone must remain in my house without fear.'
इमौ च बालकौ मह्यं कन्या चेयं सुमध्यमा संभाव्यास् ते न चाख्येयम् इदं भगवते क्वचित्
'These two boys and this slender-waisted girl are mine; you must care for them, but never reveal this to the lord at any time.'
आ कचग्रहणाद् देवि आ शापान् नैव कर्हिचित् आख्यास्यामि नमस् तुभ्यं गच्छ देवि यथासुखम्
'O goddess, until you are seized by the hair or cursed, I will never disclose this. Salutations to you; go, O goddess, as you please.'
समादिश्य सवर्णां तु तथेत्य् उक्ता तया च सा त्वष्टुः समीपम् अगमद् व्रीडितेव तपस्विनी
Having thus instructed Savarna, and receiving her assent, Sanjna, feeling ashamed and austere, went to the presence of Tvashtar.
पितुः समीपगा सा तु पित्रा निर्भर्त्सिता शुभा भर्तुः समीपं गच्छेति नियुक्ता च पुनः पुनः
Arriving near her father, the auspicious one was repeatedly rebuked by him, being told again and again to return to her husband.
आगच्छद् वडवा भूत्वा आच्छाद्य रूपम् अनिन्दिता कुरून् अथोत्तरान् गत्वा तृणान्य् अथ चचार ह
Becoming a mare and concealing her form, the blameless one went north to the land of the Kurus and grazed on grass there.
द्वितीयायां तु संज्ञायां संज्ञेयम् इति चिन्तयन् आदित्यो जनयाम् आस पुत्रम् आत्मसमं तदा
Thinking that this was his second wife, the Sun then begot a son equal to himself.
पूर्वजस्य मनोर् विप्राः सदृशो ऽयम् इति प्रभुः मनुर् एवाभवन् नाम्ना सावर्ण इति चोच्यते
The lord said, 'He is like the elder Manu.' Thus, he became known by the name Savarni.
द्वितीयो यः सुतस् तस्याः स विज्ञेयः शनैश्चरः संज्ञा तु पार्थिवी विप्राः स्वस्य पुत्रस्य वै तदा
The second son born to her is to be known as Shani; Sanjna, O twice-born, was then the mother of her own son.
चकाराभ्यधिकं स्नेहं न तथा पूर्वजेषु वै मनुस् तस्याः क्षमत् तत् तु यमस् तस्या न चक्षमे
She showed greater affection for him than for her previous children; Manu accepted this, but Yama did not.
स वै रोषाच् च बाल्याच् च भाविनो ऽर्थस्य वानघ पदा संतर्जयाम् आस संज्ञां वैवस्वतो यमः
Out of anger and childishness, Yama, son of Vivasvat, threatened Sanjna with his foot, unaware of the consequences.
तं शशाप ततः क्रोधात् सावर्णजननी तदा चरणः पतताम् एष तवेति भृशदुःखिता
Then, in great anger, Savarni's mother cursed him, saying, 'May your foot fall off,' being deeply distressed.
यमस् तु तत् पितुः सर्वं प्राञ्जलिः प्रत्यवेदयत् भृशं शापभयोद्विग्नः संज्ञावाक्यैर् विशङ्कितः
Yama, greatly agitated by fear of the curse and troubled by Sanjna's words, reported everything to his father with joined palms.
शापो ऽयं विनिवर्तेत प्रोवाच पितरं द्विजाः मात्रा स्नेहेन सर्वेषु वर्तितव्यं सुतेषु वै
He said to his father, 'May this curse be lifted.' The twice-born replied, 'One must act with affection towards all children, as a mother does.'
