In water, on earth, in the netherworld, in heaven, in the sky, on the mountain—having pervaded all this, Nārāyaṇa the Lord abides.
What is the use of saying much here? This entire world, moving and unmoving, from Brahmā down to a blade of grass, is of the nature of Nārāyaṇa.
O twice-born, I see nothing here beyond Nārāyaṇa; by him, all this—visible and invisible, moving and unmoving—is pervaded.
Waters are indeed the abode of Viṣṇu, and he is the lord of the waters; therefore, one should always remember Nārāyaṇa in the waters, the remover of sin.
Especially at the time of bathing, having approached the water in purity, one should remember Nārāyaṇa, meditate, and place (the mantra) on the hands and body.
One should place the syllable 'oṃ' and the syllable 'na' on the thumbs of both hands, and the rest on the palms, extending to the index fingers and so on.
Place the syllable 'om' on the left foot, the syllable 'na' on the right; the syllable 'mo' on the left hip, and the syllable 'na' on the right.
Place the syllable 'ra' at the navel, 'ya' on the left arm; placing 'ṇa' on the right, and 'ya' on the head.
Meditating on Nārāyaṇa above, below, at the heart, on both sides, behind, and in front, the wise one should then begin the armor (kavaca).
May Govinda protect me in the east, Madhusūdana in the south, Śrīdhara in the west, and Keśava in the north.
May Viṣṇu protect in the southeast, the imperishable Mādhava in the southwest, Hṛṣīkeśa in the northwest, and Vāmana in the northeast.
May Varāha protect on the earth, and Trivikrama above; having thus performed the armor, one should then contemplate the self.
I am Nārāyaṇa, the god, bearer of conch, discus, and mace; meditating thus on oneself, one should recite this mantra.
You are Agni, lord of bipeds, the holder of seed, the kindler of desire; the chief of all beings, the imperishable lord of living souls.
You are truly the churn-stick of immortality, the divine origin, lord of waters; remove all my sins, O king of holy places, homage to you.
Having recited thus, according to rule, one should then perform the bath; otherwise, O best of twice-born, the bath there is not commended.
Having performed the ablution and purification with Vedic mantras, one should then recite the Āghamarṣaṇa three times while in the water.
Just as the horse sacrifice, O brāhmaṇas, is the rite that removes all sins, so too is the Āghamarṣaṇa hymn here, the destroyer of all evils.
Emerging, having put on clean, washed garments, restraining the breath, sipping water, and having worshipped the Sun at twilight.
Then, standing upright, offering a handful of flowers and water, with arms raised, one should worship the Sun with those gestures.
One should recite the purifying Gāyatrī, the divine one, one hundred and eight times, and also other solar mantras, standing with concentration.
Having circumambulated the Sun and offered salutations, one should sit facing east, perform self-study, and offer libations to the deities and seers.
And to humans and other ancestors, by name and lineage, the knower of mantras should offer water mixed with sesame, with proper attention.
Having first performed the offering to the deities with concentration, the twice-born becomes qualified thereafter to perform the offering to the ancestors.
At the time of the śrāddha and the offering into the fire, one should pour with a single hand; but for the tarpaṇa, one should use both hands. This is always the prescribed rule.
With the left hand placed beneath, one should pour water using the right hand, saying 'May they be satisfied,' and reciting the names and gotras aloud.
If, out of ignorance, one performs the offering to the ancestors with sesame seeds resting on the body, then the ancestors are satisfied with one's skin, flesh, blood, and bones.
One should not perform offerings to gods and ancestors with sesame seeds placed on the limbs; the blood becomes the water, and the giver becomes sinful.
If water is given on the ground while the giver stands in water, O best of sages, it is futile and does not reach anyone.
If a man, standing on land, offers water while in water, it does not reach the ancestors; that water is useless.
