गोविन्द त्राहि संसारान् माम् उद्धर्तुं त्वम् अर्हसि मग्नस्य मोहसलिले निरुत्तारे भवार्णवे उद्धर्ता पुण्डरीकाक्ष त्वाम् ऋते ऽन्यो न विद्यते
O Govinda, save me from saṃsāra; You are able to rescue me, who am sunk in the unfathomable ocean of delusion; O Puṇḍarīkākṣa, there is no other rescuer but You.
इत्थं स्तुतस् ततस् तेन राज्ञा श्वेतेन भो द्विजाः तस्मिन् क्षेत्रवरे दिव्ये विख्याते पुरुषोत्तमे
Thus praised by King Śveta, O twice-born ones, in that renowned and divine field of Puruṣottama...
भक्तिं तस्य तु संचिन्त्य देवदेवो जगद्गुरुः आजगाम नृपस्याग्रे सर्वैर् देवैर् वृतो हरिः
Having contemplated devotion to him, the god of gods, the teacher of the world, Hari, surrounded by all the gods, appeared before the king.
नीलजीमूतसंकाशः पद्मपत्त्रायतेक्षणः दधत् सुदर्शनं धीमान् कराग्रे दीप्तमण्डलम्
He was like a dark rain cloud, with eyes wide as lotus petals, wise, holding the Sudarshana discus glowing at his fingertips.
क्षीरोदजलसंकाशो विमलश् चन्द्रसंनिभः रराज वामहस्ते ऽस्य पाञ्चजन्यो महाद्युतिः
His form resembled the waters of the milk ocean, pure and radiant like the moon; in his left hand shone the mighty Panchajanya conch.
पक्षिराजध्वजः श्रीमान् गदाशार्ङ्गासिधृक् प्रभुः उवाच साधु भो राजन् यस्य ते मतिर् उत्तमा यद् इष्टं वर भद्रं ते प्रसन्नो ऽस्मि तवानघ
Bearing the banner of the king of birds, glorious, holding mace, bow, and sword, the Lord spoke: 'Well done, O king! Your mind is noble. Ask for whatever you desire. Blessings to you, I am pleased with you, O sinless one.'
श्रुत्वैवं देवदेवस्य वाक्यं तत् परमामृतम् प्रणम्य शिरसोवाच श्वेतस् तद्गतमानसः
Hearing these words of the god of gods, which were supreme nectar, Shveta, with his mind absorbed in him, bowed his head and spoke.
यद्य् अहं भगवन् भक्तः प्रयच्छ वरम् उत्तमम् आब्रह्मभवनाद् ऊर्ध्वं वैष्णवं पदम् अव्ययम्
If I am your devotee, O Lord, grant me the highest boon: the imperishable Vaishnava abode, above even Brahma's realm.
विमलं विरजं शुद्धं संसारासङ्गवर्जितम् तत् पदं गन्तुम् इच्छामि त्वत्प्रसादाज् जगत्पते
I wish to reach that pure, stainless, spotless place, free from the bonds of worldly existence, by your grace, O Lord of the world.
यत् पदं विबुधाः सर्वे मुनयः सिद्धयोगिनः नाभिगच्छन्ति यद् रम्यं परं पदम् अनामयम्
That place which all the gods, sages, and accomplished yogis do not attain, which is delightful, supreme, and free from affliction.
यास्यसि परमं स्थानं राज्यामृतम् उपास्य च सर्वांल् लोकान् अतिक्रम्य मम लोकं गमिष्यसि
You will attain the supreme state, worship the nectar of sovereignty, and, surpassing all worlds, you will reach my realm.
कीर्तिस् तवात्र राजेन्द्र त्रींल् लोकांश् च गमिष्यति सांनिध्यं मम चैवात्र सर्वदैव भविष्यति
Your fame, O king of kings, will spread through all three worlds, and my presence here with you will always remain.
श्वेतगङ्गेति गास्यन्ति सर्वे ते देवदानवाः कुशाग्रेणापि राजेन्द्र श्वेतगाङ्गेयम् अम्बु च
All the gods and demons will sing of you as Shvetaganga; even with a blade of grass, O king, Shvetaganga's water will be praised.
स्पृष्ट्वा स्वर्गं गमिष्यन्ति मद्भक्ता ये समाहिताः यस् त्व् इमां प्रतिमां गच्छेन् माधवाख्यां शशिप्रभाम्
Those devoted to me who touch this water with concentration will attain heaven; whoever approaches this image named Madhava, shining like the moon,
शङ्खगोक्षीरसंकाशाम् अशेषाघविनाशिनीम् तां प्रणम्य सकृद् भक्त्या पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणाम्
Resembling conch and cow's milk, destroying all sins, whoever bows to her once with devotion, whose eyes are like lotuses,
विहाय सर्वलोकान् वै मम लोके महीयते मन्वन्तराणि तत्रैव देवकन्याभिर् आवृतः
Leaving all worlds behind, he is honored in my realm, surrounded there by divine maidens for the duration of a Manvantara.
गीयमानश् च मधुरं सिद्धगन्धर्वसेवितः भुनक्ति विपुलान् भोगान् यथेष्टं मामकैः सह
Praised sweetly, served by accomplished Gandharvas, he enjoys abundant pleasures as he wishes, together with my own.
च्युतस् तस्माद् इहागत्य मनुष्यो ब्राह्मणो भवेत् वेदवेदाङ्गविच् छ्रीमान् भोगवांश् चिरजीवितः
Falling from there and coming here, he becomes a human, a Brahmin, learned in the Vedas and their branches, prosperous, enjoying pleasures, and long-lived.
गजाश्वरथयानाढ्यो धनधान्यावृतः शुचिः रूपवान् बहुभाग्यश् च पुत्रपौत्रसमन्वितः
Rich in elephants, horses, chariots, vehicles, wealth, and grain, pure, handsome, very fortunate, accompanied by sons and grandsons.
पुरुषोत्तमं पुनः प्राप्य वटमूले ऽथ सागरे त्यक्त्वा देहं हरिं स्मृत्वा ततः शान्तपदं व्रजेत्
Having again attained the Supreme Person, at the banyan tree or at the ocean, abandoning the body and remembering Hari, he then reaches the peaceful state.
श्वेतमाधवम् आलोक्य समीपे मत्स्यमाधवम् एकार्णवजले पूर्वं रोहितं रूपम् आस्थितम्
Having seen the white Mādhava and, nearby, the fish-formed Mādhava—who once, in the waters of the primeval ocean, assumed the form of a red fish—
वेदानां हरणार्थाय रसातलतले स्थितम् चिन्तयित्वा क्षितिं सम्यक् तस्मिन् स्थाने प्रतिष्ठितम्
He, established in the netherworld for the purpose of recovering the Vedas, having thoroughly contemplated the earth, remained at that very place.
आद्यावतरणं रूपं माधवं मत्स्यरूपिणम् प्रणम्य प्रणतो भूत्वा सर्वदुःखाद् विमुच्यते
By bowing down and becoming devoted to that first incarnation—the Mādhava in the form of a fish—one is freed from all suffering.
प्रयाति परमं स्थानं यत्र देवो हरिः स्वयम् काले पुनर् इहायातो राजा स्यात् पृथिवीतले
He attains the supreme abode where Lord Hari himself resides; and, when the time comes, returning here, he becomes a king upon the earth.
वत्समाधवम् आसाद्य दुराधर्षो भवेन् नरः दाता भोक्ता भवेद् यज्वा वैष्णवः सत्यसंगरः
By approaching the calf-form Mādhava, a man becomes invincible, a giver, an enjoyer, a performer of sacrifices, a devotee of Viṣṇu, and steadfast in truth.
योगं प्राप्य हरेः पश्चात् ततो मोक्षम् अवाप्नुयात् मत्स्यमाधवमाहात्म्यं मया संपरिकीर्तितम् यं दृष्ट्वा मुनिशार्दूलाः सर्वान् कामान् अवाप्नुयात्
Having attained union with Hari, he then obtains liberation. I have thus fully recounted to you the greatness of the fish-formed Mādhava, by seeing whom, O best of sages, one attains all desires.
भगवञ् श्रोतुम् इच्छामो मार्जनं वरुणालये क्रियते स्नानदानादि तस्याशेषफलं वद
O Lord, we wish to hear about the purification performed at Varuṇa’s abode—about bathing, giving gifts, and so on—please tell us its complete merit.
शृणुध्वं मुनिशार्दूला मार्जनस्य यथाविधि भक्त्या तु तन्मना भूत्वा संप्राप्य पुण्यम् उत्तमम्
Hear, O best of sages, the proper method of purification; by performing it with devotion and focused mind, one attains the highest merit.
मार्कण्डेयह्रदे स्नानं पूर्वकाले प्रशस्यते चतुर्दश्यां विशेषेण सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्
Bathing in the Mārkaṇḍeya pool in ancient times is highly praised, especially on the fourteenth day, as it destroys all sins.
तद्वत् स्नानं समुद्रस्य सर्वकालं प्रशस्यते पौर्णमास्यां विशेषेण हयमेधफलं लभेत्
Likewise, bathing in the ocean is always praised; especially on the full moon, one obtains the fruit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice.
