अहं विष्णुर् अहं ब्रह्मा शक्रश् चापि सुराधिपः अहं वैश्रवणो राजा यमः प्रेताधिपस् तथा
"I am Viṣṇu, I am Brahmā, and I am also Śakra, the lord of the gods. I am Vaiśravaṇa, the king, and likewise Yama, the lord of the departed."
अहं शिवश् च सोमश् च कश्यपश् च प्रजापतिः अहं धाता विधाता च यज्ञश् चाहं द्विजोत्तम
"I am Śiva and Soma, Kaśyapa and the lord of creatures. I am Dhātā and Vidhātā, and I am also the sacrifice, O best of Brahmins."
अग्निर् आस्यं क्षितिः पादौ चन्द्रादित्यौ च लोचने द्यौर् मूर्धा खं दिशः श्रोत्रे तथापः स्वेदसंभवाः
Fire is my mouth, earth my feet, the moon and sun my eyes; the sky is my head, space my body, the directions my ears, and water arises from my sweat.
सदिशं च नभः कायो वायुर् मनसि मे स्थितः मया क्रतुशतैर् इष्टं बहुभिश् चाप्तदक्षिणैः
With the directions and space as my body, wind abides in my mind; I have been worshipped with hundreds of sacrifices, many of which were performed with generous gifts.
यजन्ते वेदविदुषो मां देवयजने स्थितम् पृथिव्यां क्षत्रियेन्द्राश् च पार्थिवाः स्वर्गकाङ्क्षिणः
Those who know the Vedas worship me, established in the divine sacrifice; on earth, the kings and rulers, desiring heaven, also worship me.
यजन्ते मां तथा वैश्याः स्वर्गलोकजिगीषवः चतुःसमुद्रपर्यन्तां मेरुमन्दरभूषणाम्
In the same way, the Vaiśyas, wishing to conquer the heavenly worlds, worship me, whose ornament is Meru and Mandara, and whose realm extends to the four oceans.
शेषो भूत्वाहम् एको हि धारयामि वसुंधराम् वाराहं रूपम् आस्थाय ममेयं जगती पुरा
I alone, becoming Śeṣa, uphold the earth; in ancient times, assuming the form of the Boar, this world belonged to me.
मज्जमाना जले विप्र वीर्येणास्मि समुद्धृता अग्निश् च वाडवो विप्र भूत्वाहं द्विजसत्तम
When she was sinking in the waters, O sage, I raised her up by my power; and, O best of twice-born, becoming the submarine fire, I drank up the waters.
पिबाम्य् अपः समाविष्टस् ताश् चैव विसृजाम्य् अहम् ब्रह्म वक्त्रं भुजौ क्षत्रम् ऊरू मे संश्रिता विशः
I absorb the waters when filled, and I release them again; Brahmins are my mouth, Kṣatriyas my arms, and Vaiśyas have taken refuge in my thighs.
पादौ शूद्रा भवन्तीमे विक्रमेण क्रमेण च ऋग्वेदः सामवेदश् च यजुर्वेदस् त्व् अथर्वणः
The Śūdras become my feet, in due order and power; the Ṛgveda, Sāmaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda—
मत्तः प्रादुर्भवन्त्य् एते माम् एव प्रविशन्ति च यतयः शान्तिपरमा यतात्मानो बुभुत्सवः
From me these arise, and into me they enter again; ascetics, intent on peace, self-controlled, and seeking knowledge, attain me.
कामक्रोधद्वेषमुक्ता निःसङ्गा वीतकल्मषाः सत्त्वस्था निरहंकारा नित्यम् अध्यात्मकोविदाः
Freed from desire, anger, and hatred, unattached, pure of stain, established in goodness, without pride, always skilled in spiritual knowledge—
माम् एव सततं विप्राश् चिन्तयन्त उपासते अहं संवर्तको ज्योतिर् अहं संवर्तको ऽनलः
Brahmins, ever contemplating me, worship me; I am the consuming fire, I am the consuming light.
अहं संवर्तकः सूर्यस् त्व् अहं संवर्तको ऽनिलः तारारूपाणि दृश्यन्ते यान्य् एतानि नभस्तले
I am the consuming sun, I am the consuming wind; whatever star-forms are seen in the sky—
मम वै रोमकूपाणि विद्धि त्वं द्विजसत्तम रत्नाकराः समुद्राश् च सर्व एव चतुर्दिशः
Know, O best of twice-born, that all the oceans and treasure-houses in every direction are my very pores.
वसनं शयनं चैव निलयं चैव विद्धि मे कामः क्रोधश् च हर्षश् च भयं मोहस् तथैव च
Know that my desires, anger, joy, fear, and delusion are the very forms of my clothing, bed, and dwelling.
ममैव विद्धि रूपाणि सर्वाण्य् एतानि सत्तम प्राप्नुवन्ति नरा विप्र यत् कृत्वा कर्म शोभनम्
Know, O best, that all these are my forms; people, O sage, attain them by performing virtuous deeds.
सत्यं दानं तपश् चोग्रम् अहिंसां सर्वजन्तुषु मद्विधानेन विहिता मम देहविचारिणः
Truth, charity, severe austerity, and nonviolence toward all beings are prescribed by me for those who dwell in my body.
मयाभिभूतविज्ञानाश् चेष्टयन्ति न कामतः सम्यग् वेदम् अधीयाना यजन्तो विविधैर् मखैः
Those whose knowledge is subdued by me do not act out of desire; those who study the Veda properly and worship with various sacrifices—
शान्तात्मानो जितक्रोधाः प्राप्नुवन्ति द्विजातयः प्राप्तुं शक्यो न चैवाहं नरैर् दुष्कृतकर्मभिः
Those twice-born, with peaceful minds and conquered anger, attain me; but I cannot be attained by men who perform evil deeds.
लोभाभिभूतैः कृपणैर् अनार्यैर् अकृतात्मभिः तन् मां महाफलं विद्धि नराणां भावितात्मनाम्
Know me as the great fruit for those humans of noble mind, not for the wretched, ignoble, and self-unformed who are overcome by greed.
सुदुष्प्रापं विमूढानां मां कुयोगनिषेविणाम् यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर् भवति सत्तम
I am exceedingly difficult to attain for the deluded who pursue false practices; whenever there is a decline of righteousness, O noble one—
अभ्युत्थानम् अधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्य् अहम् दैत्या हिंसानुरक्ताश् च अवध्याः सुरसत्तमैः
And whenever unrighteousness rises, then I create myself; the demons, attached to violence, are invincible even for the best of gods.
राक्षसाश् चापि लोके ऽस्मिन् यदोत्पत्स्यन्ति दारुणाः तदाहं संप्रसूयामि गृहेषु पुण्यकर्मणाम्
And when fierce rakshasas arise in this world, then I am born in the homes of those who perform virtuous deeds.
प्रविष्टो मानुषं देहं सर्वं प्रशमयाम्य् अहम् सृष्ट्वा देवमनुष्यांश् च गन्धर्वोरगराक्षसान्
Entering a human body, I pacify everything; having created gods, humans, gandharvas, serpents, and rakshasas—
स्थावराणि च भूतानि संहराम्य् आत्ममायया कर्मकाले पुनर् देहम् अनुचिन्त्य सृजाम्य् अहम्
And all stationary beings, I withdraw them by my own power; at the time of action, reflecting, I again create the body.
आविश्य मानुषं देहं मर्यादाबन्धकारणात् श्वेतः कृतयुगे धर्मः श्यामस् त्रेतायुगे मम
Entering a human body for the sake of establishing boundaries, righteousness is white in the Krita age, and mine is dark in the Treta age.
रक्तो द्वापरम् आसाद्य कृष्णः कलियुगे तथा त्रयो भागा ह्य् अधर्मस्य तस्मिन् काले भवन्ति च
It is red in Dvapara, and black likewise in Kali; in that time, three parts of unrighteousness arise.
अन्तकाले च संप्राप्ते कालो भूत्वातिदारुणः त्रैलोक्यं नाशयाम्य् एकः सर्वं स्थावरजङ्गमम्
And when the end time arrives, becoming time itself, exceedingly fierce, I destroy the three worlds, all that is moving and unmoving.
अहं त्रिधर्मा विश्वात्मा सर्वलोकसुखावहः अभिन्नः सर्वगो ऽनन्तो हृषीकेश उरुक्रमः
I am threefold righteousness, the soul of the universe, the bringer of happiness to all worlds; undivided, all-pervading, infinite, master of the senses, mighty in stride.
