रक्ताङ्गुलितलौ पादौ ततस् तस्य सुरार्चितौ प्रणम्य शिरसा विप्रा हर्षगद्गदया गिरा
Then, he bowed with his head to the god's feet, red at the tips of the toes and worshipped by the gods, and spoke with a voice choked with joy.
कृताञ्जलिस् तदा हृष्टो विस्मितश् च पुनः पुनः दृष्ट्वा तं परमात्मानं संस्तोतुम् उपचक्रमे
With hands joined in reverence, delighted and amazed again and again, seeing that Supreme Self, he began to praise him.
देवदेव जगन्नाथ मायाबालवपुर्धर त्राहि मां चारुपद्माक्ष दुःखितं शरणागतम्
O God of gods, Lord of the universe, bearing the form of a magical child, protect me, O beautiful lotus-eyed one, who am suffering and have come for refuge.
संतप्तो ऽस्मि सुरश्रेष्ठ संवर्ताख्येन वह्निना अङ्गारवर्षभीतं च त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम
I am tormented, O best of gods, by the fire called Saṃvartaka, and frightened by the rain of embers; protect me, O Supreme Person.
शोषितश् च प्रचण्डेन वायुना जगदायुना विह्वलो ऽहं तथा श्रान्तस् त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम
I have been dried up by the fierce wind, the life-breath of the universe; I am distressed and weary—protect me, O Supreme Person.
तापितश् च तशामात्यैः प्रलयावर्तकादिभिः न शान्तिम् अधिगच्छामि त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम
I am scorched by the ministers of destruction, by whirlwinds of dissolution and the like; I do not attain peace—protect me, O Supreme Person.
तृषितश् च क्षुधाविष्टो दुःखितश् च जगत्पते त्रातारं नात्र पश्यामि त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम
Thirsty and afflicted by hunger, suffering, O Lord of the world, I see no protector here; save me, O Supreme Person.
अस्मिन्न् एकार्णवे घोरे विनष्टे सचराचरे न चान्तम् अधिगच्छामि त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम
In this dreadful, single ocean, where all moving and unmoving beings are destroyed, I find no end; save me, O Supreme Person.
तवोदरे च देवेश मया दृष्टं चराचरम् विस्मितो ऽहं विषण्णश् च त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम
Within your belly, O Lord of gods, I have seen all that moves and does not move; I am astonished and distressed—save me, O Supreme Person.
संसारे ऽस्मिन् निरालम्बे प्रसीद पुरुषोत्तम प्रसीद विबुधश्रेष्ठ प्रसीद विबुधप्रिय
In this world, without support, be gracious, O Supreme Person; be gracious, O best of the gods; be gracious, O beloved of the gods.
प्रसीद विबुधां नाथ प्रसीद विबुधालय प्रसीद सर्वलोकेश जगत्कारणकारण
Be gracious, O Lord of the gods; be gracious, O abode of the gods; be gracious, O Lord of all worlds, cause of the cause of the universe.
प्रसीद सर्वकृद् देव प्रसीद मम भूधर प्रसीद सलिलावास प्रसीद मधुसूदन
Be gracious, O creator of all, O god; be gracious, my sustainer; be gracious, O dweller in the waters; be gracious, O slayer of Madhu.
प्रसीद कमलाकान्त प्रसीद त्रिदशेश्वर प्रसीद कंसकेशीघ्न प्रसीदारिष्टनाशन
Be gracious, O beloved of Lakshmi; be gracious, O lord of the thirty gods; be gracious, O slayer of Kamsa and Keshi; be gracious, O destroyer of Arishta.
प्रसीद कृष्ण दैत्यघ्न प्रसीद दनुजान्तक प्रसीद मथुरावास प्रसीद यदुनन्दन
Be gracious, O Krishna, destroyer of demons; be gracious, O ender of Danavas; be gracious, O dweller in Mathura; be gracious, O joy of the Yadus.
प्रसीद शक्रावरज प्रसीद वरदाव्यय त्वं मही त्वं जलं देव त्वम् अग्निस् त्वं समीरणः
Be gracious, O younger brother of Indra; be gracious, O giver of boons, imperishable one. You are the earth, you are the water, O god; you are the fire, you are the wind.
त्वं नभस् त्वं मनश् चैव त्वम् अहंकार एव च त्वं बुद्धिः प्रकृतिश् चैव सत्त्वाद्यास् त्वं जगत्पते
You are the sky, you are the mind, and you are also the ego; you are intelligence and nature, and the qualities beginning with sattva, O Lord of the world.
पुरुषस् त्वं जगद्व्यापी पुरुषाद् अपि चोत्तमः त्वम् इन्द्रियाणि सर्वाणि शब्दाद्या विषयाः प्रभो
You are the Person, pervading the universe, and greater than even the supreme Person; you are all the senses, O Lord, and the objects beginning with sound.
त्वं दिक्पालाश् च धर्माश् च वेदा यज्ञाः सदक्षिणाः त्वम् इन्द्रस् त्वं शिवो देवस् त्वं हविस् त्वं हुताशनः
You are the guardians of the directions, and righteousness, and the Vedas, and sacrifices with proper gifts; you are Indra, you are Shiva, O god; you are the offering, you are the fire.
त्वं यमः पितृराट् देव त्वं रक्षोधिपतिः स्वयम् वरुणस् त्वम् अपां नाथ त्वं वायुस् त्वं धनेश्वरः
You are Yama, lord of ancestors, O god; you are the chief of the Rakshasas yourself; you are Varuna, lord of the waters; you are Vayu, you are the lord of wealth.
त्वम् ईशानस् त्वम् अनन्तस् त्वं गणेशश् च षण्मुखः वसवस् त्वं तथा रुद्रास् त्वम् आदित्याश् च खेचराः
You are Ishana, you are Ananta, you are Ganesha and Shanmukha; you are the Vasus, likewise the Rudras, the Adityas, and the beings of the sky.
दानवास् त्वं तथा यक्षास् त्वं दैत्याः समरुद्गणाः सिद्धाश् चाप्सरसो नागा गन्धर्वास् त्वं सचारणाः
You are the Danavas, likewise the Yakshas, you are the Daityas and the Maruts; you are the Siddhas, Apsaras, Nagas, Gandharvas, and the Charanas.
पितरो वालखिल्याश् च प्रजानां पतयो ऽच्युत मुनयस् त्वम् ऋषिगणास् त्वम् अश्विनौ निशाचराः
You are the ancestors, the Valakhilyas, the lords of creatures, O imperishable one; you are the sages, the hosts of seers, the Ashvins, and the night-dwellers.
अन्याश् च जातयस् त्वं हि यत् किंचिज् जीवसंज्ञितम् किं चात्र बहुनोक्तेन ब्रह्मादिस्तम्बगोचरम्
You are all other kinds of beings—whatever is called living; what is the use of saying much? You encompass everything from Brahma to the smallest blade of grass.
भूतं भव्यं भविष्यं च त्वं जगत् सचराचरम् यत् ते रूपं परं देव कूटस्थम् अचलं ध्रुवम्
You are the past, present, and future; you are the world with all that moves and does not move. That supreme form of yours, O god, is immutable, unchanging, and fixed.
ब्रह्माद्यास् तन् न जानन्ति कथम् अन्ये ऽल्पमेधसः देव शुद्धस्वभावो ऽसि नित्यस् त्वं प्रकृतेः परः
Even Brahma and the others do not know this; how then could others of lesser understanding? O God, you are of pure nature, eternal, and beyond matter.
अव्यक्तः शाश्वतो ऽनन्तः सर्वव्यापी महेश्वरः त्वम् आकाशः परः शान्तो अजस् त्वं विभुर् अव्ययः
You are unmanifest, everlasting, infinite, all-pervading, the great Lord. You are higher than space, peaceful, unborn, all-powerful, and imperishable.
एवं त्वां निर्गुणं स्तोतुं कः शक्नोति निरञ्जनम् स्तुतो ऽसि यन् मया देव विकलेनाल्पचेतसा तत् सर्वं देवदेवेश क्षन्तुम् अर्हसि चाव्यय
Who indeed is able to praise you, who are without qualities and without blemish, in this way? Whatever I have praised you with, O God, though my mind is limited and imperfect, O Lord of gods, you who are imperishable, please forgive it all.
इत्थं स्तुतस् तदा तेन मार्कण्डेयेन भो द्विजाः प्रीतः प्रोवाच भगवान् मेघगम्भीरया गिरा
Thus praised at that time by Markandeya, O twice-born, the Blessed Lord, pleased, spoke with a voice deep as thunderclouds.
ब्रूहि कामं मुनिश्रेष्ठ यत् ते मनसि वर्तते ददामि सर्वं विप्रर्षे मत्तो यद् अभिवाञ्छसि
"Speak your desire, O best of sages, whatever is in your mind. I will grant all you wish from me, O great sage among the Brahmins."
श्रुत्वा स वचनं विप्राः शिशोस् तस्य महात्मनः उवाच परमप्रीतो मुनिस् तद्गतमानसः
Hearing those words of the great-souled child, the sage, his mind absorbed in him, replied with utmost joy.
