मृगाञ् शाखामृगान् सिंहान् वराहान् सृमराञ् शशान् गजांश् चान्यांस् तथा सत्त्वान् सो ऽपश्यत् तस्य चोदरे
He saw deer, monkeys, lions, boars, hyenas, hares, elephants, and other creatures within his body.
पृथिव्यां यानि तीर्थानि ग्रामाश् च नगराणि च कृषिगोरक्षवाणिज्यं क्रयविक्रयणं तथा
He saw all the sacred fords, villages, and cities on earth, as well as agriculture, cattle-tending, trade, and buying and selling.
शक्रादीन् विबुधाञ् श्रेष्ठांस् तथान्यांश् च दिवौकसः गन्धर्वाप्सरसो यक्षान् ऋषींश् चैव सनातनान्
He saw the foremost gods beginning with Indra, and other celestial beings, gandharvas, apsarases, yakshas, and the ancient seers.
दैत्यदानवसंघांश् च नागांश् च मुनिसत्तमाः सिंहिकातनयांश् चैव ये चान्ये सुरशत्रवः
He saw hosts of daityas and dānavas, nāgas, great sages, the sons of Siṃhikā, and other enemies of the gods.
यत् किंचित् तेन लोके ऽस्मिन् दृष्टपूर्वं चराचरम् अपश्यत् स तदा सर्वं तस्य कुक्षौ द्विजोत्तमाः
Whatever moving or unmoving thing had ever been seen in this world, he saw all of it then within his belly, O best of twice-born.
अथवा किं बहूक्तेन कीर्तितेन पुनः पुनः ब्रह्मादिस्तम्बपर्यन्तं यत् किंचित् सचराचरम्
Or rather, what is the use of much speaking and repeated enumeration? Whatever exists, from Brahmā down to a blade of grass, moving or unmoving—
भूर्लोकं च भुवर्लोकं स्वर्लोकं च द्विजोत्तमाः महर् जनस् तपः सत्यम् अतलं वितलं तथा
He saw, O best of twice-born, the earth-world, the mid-region, the heaven-world, Mahar, Janas, Tapas, Satya, Atala, and Vitala.
पातालं सुतलं चैव वितलं च रसातलम् महातलं च ब्रह्माण्डम् अपश्यत् तस्य चोदरे
He saw Pātāla, Sutala, Vitala, Rasātala, Mahātala, and the cosmic egg itself within his belly.
अव्याहता गतिस् तस्य तदाभूद् द्विजसत्तमाः प्रसादात् तस्य देवस्य स्मृतिलोपश् च नाभवत्
His movement was unobstructed at that time, O best of twice-born, by the grace of that god, and he did not suffer loss of memory.
भ्रममाणस् तदा कुक्षौ कृत्स्नं जगद् इदं द्विजाः नान्तं जगाम देहस्य तस्य विष्णोः कदाचन
While wandering in the womb, O Brahmins, he did not reach the end of the body of Viṣṇu, though the entire universe was there.
यदासौ नागतश् चान्तं तस्य देहस्य भो द्विजाः तदा तं वरदं देवं शरणं गतवान् मुनिः
When he could not find the limit of that body, O Brahmins, then the sage sought refuge in that boon-giving god.
ततो ऽसौ सहसा विप्रा वायुवेगेन निःसृतः महात्मनो मुखात् तस्य विवृतात् पुरुषस्य सः
Then, O Brahmins, he suddenly emerged by the force of wind from the mouth of that great-souled person, which was open.
स निष्क्रम्योदरात् तस्य बालस्य मुनिसत्तमाः पुनश् चैकार्णवाम् उर्वीम् अपश्यज् जनवर्जिताम्
Having exited from his belly, O eminent sages, he again saw the earth as a single ocean, devoid of people.
पूर्वदृष्टं च तं देवं ददर्श शिशुरूपिणम् शाखायां वटवृक्षस्य पर्यङ्कोपरि संस्थितम्
He saw again that god, as previously seen, in the form of a child, seated on a couch atop a branch of a banyan tree.
श्रीवत्सवक्षसं देवं पीतवस्त्रं चतुर्भुजम् जगद् आदाय तिष्ठन्तं पद्मपत्त्रायतेक्षणम्
He saw the god with the mark of Śrīvatsa on his chest, wearing yellow garments, four-armed, holding the universe, with eyes wide like lotus petals.
सो ऽपि तं मुनिम् आयान्तं प्लवमानम् अचेतनम् दृष्ट्वा मुखाद् विनिष्क्रान्तं प्रोवाच प्रहसन्न् इव
That god, seeing the sage approaching, floating and unconscious, emerging from his mouth, spoke to him, smiling.
कच्चित् त्वयोषितं वत्स विश्रान्तं च ममोदरे भ्रममाणश् च किं तत्र आश्चर्यं दृष्टवान् असि
Child, did you rest in my belly, and while wandering there, did you see anything wondrous?
भक्तो ऽसि मे मुनिश्रेष्ठ श्रान्तो ऽसि च ममाश्रितः तेन त्वाम् उपकाराय संभाषे पश्य माम् इह
You are my devotee, O best of sages, weary and sheltered by me; therefore, I speak to you for your benefit—look upon me here.
श्रुत्वा स वचनं तस्य संप्रहृष्टतनूरुहः ददर्श तं सुदुष्प्रेक्षं रत्नैर् दिव्यैर् अलंकृतम्
Hearing his words, his body hair stood on end with joy; he saw that one, difficult to behold, adorned with divine jewels.
प्रसन्ना निर्मला दृष्टिर् मुहूर्तात् तस्य भो द्विजाः प्रसादात् तस्य देवस्य प्रादुर्भूता पुनर् नवा
His gaze became clear and pure in a moment, O Brahmins, by the grace of that god, and a new vision appeared again.
रक्ताङ्गुलितलौ पादौ ततस् तस्य सुरार्चितौ प्रणम्य शिरसा विप्रा हर्षगद्गदया गिरा
Then, he bowed with his head to the god's feet, red at the tips of the toes and worshipped by the gods, and spoke with a voice choked with joy.
कृताञ्जलिस् तदा हृष्टो विस्मितश् च पुनः पुनः दृष्ट्वा तं परमात्मानं संस्तोतुम् उपचक्रमे
With hands joined in reverence, delighted and amazed again and again, seeing that Supreme Self, he began to praise him.
देवदेव जगन्नाथ मायाबालवपुर्धर त्राहि मां चारुपद्माक्ष दुःखितं शरणागतम्
O God of gods, Lord of the universe, bearing the form of a magical child, protect me, O beautiful lotus-eyed one, who am suffering and have come for refuge.
संतप्तो ऽस्मि सुरश्रेष्ठ संवर्ताख्येन वह्निना अङ्गारवर्षभीतं च त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम
I am tormented, O best of gods, by the fire called Saṃvartaka, and frightened by the rain of embers; protect me, O Supreme Person.
शोषितश् च प्रचण्डेन वायुना जगदायुना विह्वलो ऽहं तथा श्रान्तस् त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम
I have been dried up by the fierce wind, the life-breath of the universe; I am distressed and weary—protect me, O Supreme Person.
तापितश् च तशामात्यैः प्रलयावर्तकादिभिः न शान्तिम् अधिगच्छामि त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम
I am scorched by the ministers of destruction, by whirlwinds of dissolution and the like; I do not attain peace—protect me, O Supreme Person.
तृषितश् च क्षुधाविष्टो दुःखितश् च जगत्पते त्रातारं नात्र पश्यामि त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम
Thirsty and afflicted by hunger, suffering, O Lord of the world, I see no protector here; save me, O Supreme Person.
अस्मिन्न् एकार्णवे घोरे विनष्टे सचराचरे न चान्तम् अधिगच्छामि त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम
In this dreadful, single ocean, where all moving and unmoving beings are destroyed, I find no end; save me, O Supreme Person.
तवोदरे च देवेश मया दृष्टं चराचरम् विस्मितो ऽहं विषण्णश् च त्राहि मां पुरुषोत्तम
Within your belly, O Lord of gods, I have seen all that moves and does not move; I am astonished and distressed—save me, O Supreme Person.
संसारे ऽस्मिन् निरालम्बे प्रसीद पुरुषोत्तम प्रसीद विबुधश्रेष्ठ प्रसीद विबुधप्रिय
In this world, without support, be gracious, O Supreme Person; be gracious, O best of the gods; be gracious, O beloved of the gods.
