एते वत्सविशेषाश् च दोग्धारः क्षीरम् एव च पात्राणि च मयोक्तानि किं भूयो वर्णयामि वः
These distinctions among calves, milkers, milk, and vessels have been described by me; what more should I explain to you?
मन्वन्तराणि सर्वाणि विस्तरेण महामते तेषां पूर्वविसृष्टिं च लोमहर्षण कीर्तय
O wise one, recount in detail all the Manvantaras and their previous creations, O Lomaharshana.
यावन्तो मनवश् चैव यावन्तं कालम् एव च मन्वन्तराणि भोः सूत श्रोतुम् इच्छाम तत्त्वतः
O Sūta, we wish to hear, in truth, how many Manus there have been, for how long, and the Manvantaras.
न शक्यो विस्तरो विप्रा वक्तुं वर्षशतैर् अपि मन्वन्तराणां सर्वेषां संक्षेपाच् छृणुत द्विजाः
O twice-born, the full account of all the Manvantaras cannot be spoken even in hundreds of years; hear the summary.
स्वायंभुवो मनुः पूर्वं मनुः स्वारोचिषस् तथा उत्तमस् तामसश् चैव रैवतश् चाक्षुषस् तथा
First was Svāyambhuva Manu, then Svārociṣa, Uttama, Tāmasa, Raivata, and also Cākṣuṣa.
वैवस्वतश् च भो विप्राः सांप्रतं मनुर् उच्यते सावर्णिश् च मनुस् तद्वद् रैभ्यो रौच्यस् तथैव च
O Brāhmaṇas, Vaivasvata is the Manu currently spoken of; likewise, Sāvarṇi, Raibhya, and Raucyas.
तथैव मेरुसावर्ण्यश् चत्वारो मनवः स्मृताः अतीता वर्तमानाश् च तथैवानागता द्विजाः
Similarly, Merusāvarṇya—four Manus are remembered: those past, present, and also those yet to come, O twice-born.
कीर्तिता मनवस् तुभ्यं मयैवैते यथा श्रुताः ऋषींस् त्व् एषां प्रवक्ष्यामि पुत्रान् देवगणांस् तथा
I have named these Manus to you as I have heard; now I will declare their sages, sons, and divine hosts.
मरीचिर् अत्रिर् भगवान् अङ्गिराः पुलहः क्रतुः पुलस्त्यश् च वसिष्ठश् च सप्तैते ब्रह्मणः सुताः
Marīci, Atri, the venerable Aṅgirā, Pulaha, Kratu, Pulastya, and Vasiṣṭha—these seven are sons of Brahmā.
उत्तरस्यां दिशि तथा द्विजाः सप्तर्षयस् तथा आग्निइध्रश् चाग्निबाहुश् च मेध्यो मेधातिथिर् वसुः
Likewise, O twice-born, in the northern direction are the seven sages: Āgnīdhra, Āgnibāhu, Medhya, Medhātithi, and Vasu.
ज्योतिष्मान् द्युतिमान् हव्यः सवलः पुत्रसंज्ञकः मनोः स्वायंभुवस्यैते दश पुत्रा महौजसः
Jyotiṣmān, Dyutimān, Havya, Savala, and Putrasaṃjñaka—these ten mighty sons of Svāyambhuva Manu.
एतद् वै प्रथमं विप्रा मन्वन्तरम् उदाहृतम् और्वो वसिष्ठपुत्रश् च स्तम्बः कश्यप एव च
This, O Brāhmaṇas, is called the first Manvantara; Aurva, son of Vasiṣṭha, Stamba, and Kaśyapa as well.
प्राणो बृहस्पतिश् चैव दत्तो ऽत्रिच्च्यवनस् तथा एते महर्षयो विप्रा वायुप्रोक्ता महाव्रताः
Prāṇa, Bṛhaspati, Datta, Atri, and Cyavana—these great sages, O Brāhmaṇas, are renowned for their vows, as spoken by Vāyu.
देवाश् च तुषिता नाम स्मृताः स्वारोचिषे ऽन्तरे हविघ्नः सुकृतिर् ज्योतिर् आपो मूर्तिर् अपि स्मृतः
The gods called Tuṣitas are remembered in the Svārociṣa interval: Havighna, Sukṛti, Jyotir, Āpa, and Mūrti are also recalled.
प्रतीतश् च नभस्यश् च नभ ऊर्जस् तथैव च स्वारोचिषस्य पुत्रास् ते मनोर् विप्रा महात्मनः
Pratīta, Nabhasya, Nabha, and Ūrja likewise—these are the sons of Svārociṣa Manu, O Brāhmaṇas of great soul.
कीर्तिताः पृथिवीपाला महावीर्यपराक्रमाः द्वितीयम् एतत् कथितं विप्रा मन्वन्तरं मया
The rulers of the earth, famed for their great strength and valor, have been named; this is the second Manvantara described by me, O Brāhmaṇas.
इदं तृतीयं वक्ष्यामि तद् बुध्यध्वं द्विजोत्तमाः वसिष्ठपुत्राः सप्तासन् वासिष्ठा इति विश्रुताः
Now I will speak of the third; understand this, O best of twice-born. The seven sons of Vasiṣṭha are known as the Vāsiṣṭhas.
हिरण्यगर्भस्य सुता ऊर्जा जाताः सुतेजसः ऋषयो ऽत्र मया प्रोक्ताः कीर्त्यमानान् निबोधत
The sons of Hiraṇyagarbha, Ūrjā, born of great brilliance, are the sages here spoken by me; listen as they are praised.
औत्तमेयान् मुनिश्रेष्ठा दश पुत्रान् मनोर् इमान् इष ऊर्जस् तनूर्जस् तु मधुर् माधव एव च
O best of sages, these are the ten sons of Manu, born of Uttamā: Iṣa, Ūrja, Tanūrja, Madhur, Mādhava,
शुचिः शुक्रः सहश् चैव नभस्यो नभ एव च भानवस् तत्र देवाश् च मन्वन्तरम् उदाहृतम्
Śuci, Śukra, Saha, Nabhasya, Nabha, and Bhānava; and there, the gods are also declared for that Manvantara.
मन्वन्तरं चतुर्थं वः कथयिष्यामि सांप्रतम् काव्यः पृथुस् तथैवाग्निर् जह्नुर् धाता द्विजोत्तमाः
Now I shall tell you of the fourth Manvantara: Kāvyas, Pṛthu, Agni, Jahnu, and Dhātā, O best of twice-born.
कपीवान् अकपीवांश् च तत्र सप्तर्षयो द्विजाः पुराणे कीर्तिता विप्राः पुत्राः पौत्राश् च भो द्विजाः
Kapīvān and Akapīvān were the seven sages there, O twice-born; in the Purāṇas, their sons and grandsons are also praised, O Brāhmaṇas.
तथा देवगणाश् चैव तामसस्यान्तरे मनोः द्युतिस् तपस्यः सुतपास् तपोभूतः सनातनः
Likewise, the groups of gods in the interval of Tāmasa Manu were Dyuti, Tapasya, Sutapas, Tapobhūta, and Sanātana.
तपोरतिर् अकल्माषस् तन्वी धन्वी परंतपः तामसस्य मनोर् एते दश पुत्राः प्रकीर्तिताः
Taporati, Akalmāṣa, Tanvī, Dhanvī, and Paraṃtapa—these ten sons of Tāmasa Manu are declared.
वायुप्रोक्ता मुनिश्रेष्ठाश् चतुर्थं चैतद् अन्तरम् देवबाहुर् यदुध्रश् च मुनिर् वेदशिरास् तथा
The best of sages, as spoken by Vāyu, in that fourth interval are Devabāhu, Yadudhra, the sage Vedaśirā,
हिरण्यरोमा पर्जन्य ऊर्ध्वबाहुश् च सोमजः सत्यनेत्रस् तथात्रेय एते सप्तर्षयो ऽपरे
Hiraṇyaromā, Parjanya, Ūrdhvabāhu, Somaja, Satyanetra, and Ātreya—these are the other seven sages.
देवाश् चाभूतरजसस् तथा प्रकृतयः स्मृताः वारिप्लवश् च रैभ्यश् च मनोर् अन्तरम् उच्यते
The gods called Abhūtarajasas and the Prakṛtis are remembered; Vāriplava and Raibhya are also named in the interval of Manu.
अथ पुत्रान् इमांस् तस्य बुध्यध्वं गदतो मम धृतिमान् अव्ययो युक्तस् तत्त्वदर्शी निरुत्सुकः
Now listen as I tell you of his sons: Dhṛtimān, Avyaya, Yukta, Tattvadarśī, and Nirutsuka.
आरण्यश् च प्रकाशश् च निर्मोहः सत्यवाक् कृती रैवतस्य मनोः पुत्राः पञ्चमं चैतद् अन्तरम्
Āraṇya, Prakāśa, Nirmoha, Satyavāk, and Kṛtī—these are the sons of Raivata Manu; this is the fifth interval.
षष्ठं तु संप्रवक्ष्यामि तद् बुध्यध्वं द्विजोत्तमाः भृगुर् नभो विवस्वांश् च सुधामा विरजास् तथा
Now I shall declare the sixth; understand this, O best of twice-born: Bhṛgu, Nabha, Vivasvān, Sudhāmā, and Virajā,
