परमं तव यद् रूपं भावाभावविवर्जितम् निर्लेपं निर्गुणं श्रेष्ठं कूटस्थम् अचलं ध्रुवम्
Your supreme form is beyond existence and non-existence, untouched, without qualities, highest, unchanging, immovable, and eternal.
सर्वोपाधिविनिर्मुक्तं सत्तामात्रव्यवस्थितम् तद् देवाश् च न जानन्ति कथं जानाम्य् अहं प्रभो
Free from all limiting conditions, established solely in pure being—that form even the gods do not know; how then could I know it, O Lord?
अपरं तव यद् रूपं पीतवस्त्रं चतुर्भुजम् शङ्खचक्रगदापाणिमुकुटाङ्गदधारिणम्
Your other form is described as wearing yellow garments, with four arms, holding conch, discus, and mace, adorned with crown and armlets.
श्रीवत्सोरस्कसंयुक्तं वनमालाविभूषितम् तद् अर्चयन्ति विबुधा ये चान्ये तव संश्रयाः
Endowed with the Śrīvatsa mark on your chest, adorned with a garland of forest flowers—this form is worshipped by the wise and by all who seek your refuge.
देवदेव सुरश्रेष्ठ भक्तानाम् अभयप्रद त्राहि मां पद्मपत्त्राक्ष मग्नं विषयसागरे
O God of gods, best among the gods, giver of fearlessness to your devotees, save me, O lotus-eyed one, who am sunk in the ocean of sense-objects.
नान्यं पश्यामि लोकेश यस्याहं शरणं व्रजे त्वाम् ऋते कमलाकान्त प्रसीद मधुसूदन
I see no other, O Lord of the world, to whom I may take refuge; except for you, O beloved of Lakṣmī, be gracious, O slayer of Madhu.
जराव्याधिशतैर् युक्तो नानादुःखैर् निपीडितः हर्षशोकान्वितो मूढः कर्मपाशैः सुयन्त्रितः
Afflicted by hundreds of old age and diseases, oppressed by various sorrows, beset by joy and grief, deluded and tightly bound by the cords of karma.
पतितो ऽहं महारौद्रे घोरे संसारसागरे विषमोदकदुष्पारे रागद्वेषझषाकुले
I have fallen into the dreadful, terrible ocean of worldly existence, hard to cross, with poisonous waters, teeming with the fish of passion and aversion.
इन्द्रियावर्तगम्भीरे तृष्णाशोकोर्मिसंकुले निराश्रये निरालम्बे निःसारे ऽत्यन्तचञ्चले
Deep with the whirlpools of the senses, agitated by the waves of craving and sorrow, without support or foundation, devoid of essence, utterly unstable.
मायया मोहितस् तत्र भ्रमामि सुचिरं प्रभो नानाजातिसहस्रेषु जायमानः पुनः पुनः
Deluded there by Māyā, I wander for a long time, O Lord, being born again and again in thousands of different kinds of existence.
मया जन्मान्य् अनेकानि सहस्राण्य् अयुतानि च विविधान्य् अनुभूतानि संसारे ऽस्मिञ् जनार्दन
By me, countless births—thousands and tens of thousands—of various kinds have been experienced in this cycle of existence, O Janārdana.
वेदाः साङ्गा मयाधीताः शास्त्राणि विविधानि च इतिहासपुराणानि तथा शिल्पान्य् अनेकशः
The Vedas with their branches I have studied, and various treatises, histories, and ancient tales, as well as many arts.
असंतोषाश् च संतोषाः संचयापचया व्ययाः मया प्राप्ता जगन्नाथ क्षयवृद्ध्यक्षयेतराः
Both dissatisfaction and satisfaction, accumulation and loss, expenditures—all these have been experienced by me, O Lord of the universe, along with increase, decrease, and what is neither.
भार्यारिमित्रबन्धूनां वियोगाः संगमास् तथा पितरो विविधा दृष्टा मातरश् च तथा मया
Separation and union with wives, enemies, and relatives, as well as seeing various fathers and mothers—these too have I experienced.
दुःखानि चानुभूतानि यानि सौख्यान्य् अनेकशः प्राप्ताश् च बान्धवाः पुत्रा भ्रातरो ज्ञातयस् तथा
Sorrows have been experienced, and many kinds of happiness attained; relatives, sons, brothers, and kin have likewise been gained.
मयोषितं तथा स्त्रीणां कोष्ठे विण्मूत्रपिच्छले गर्भवासे महादुःखम् अनुभूतं तथा प्रभो
I too have dwelt among women, in the foul, urine- and excrement-filled womb; such great suffering in the womb has also been experienced by me, O Lord.
दुःखानि यान्य् अनेकानि बाल्ययौवनगोचरे वार्धके च हृषीकेश तानि प्राप्तानि वै मया
O Lord of the senses, I have experienced many sufferings in childhood, youth, and old age.
मरणे यानि दुःखानि यममार्गे यमालये मया तान्य् अनुभूतानि नरके यातनास् तथा
I have endured the pains of death, the path to Yama, and the abode of Yama, as well as the torments of hell.
कृमिकीटद्रुमाणां च हस्त्यश्वमृगपक्षिणाम् महिषोष्ट्रगवां चैव तथान्येषां वनौकसाम्
I have been among worms, insects, trees, elephants, horses, deer, birds, buffaloes, camels, cows, and other creatures of the forest.
द्विजातीनां च सर्वेषां शूद्राणां चैव योनिषु धनिनां क्षत्रियाणां च दरिद्राणां तपस्विनाम्
I have been born in all the castes of twice-born, in the wombs of Shudras, among the wealthy, the Kshatriyas, the poor, and ascetics.
नृपाणां नृपभृत्यानां तथान्येषां च देहिनाम् गृहेषु तेषाम् उत्पन्नो देव चाहं पुनः पुनः
I have been born repeatedly in the homes of kings, their servants, and other embodied beings, O Lord.
गतो ऽस्मि दासतां नाथ भृत्यानां बहुशो नृणाम् दरिद्रत्वं चेश्वरत्वं स्वामित्वं च तथा गतः
I have become a servant to many men, O Master, and have experienced poverty, lordship, and ownership.
हतो मया हताश् चान्ये घातितो घातितास् तथा दत्तं ममान्यैर् अन्येभ्यो मया दत्तम् अनेकशः
I have killed others and been killed; I have caused death and been caused to die; I have given to others and received from others many times.
पितृमातृसुहृद्भ्रातृकलत्राणां कृतेन च धनिनां श्रोत्रियाणां च दरिद्राणां तपस्विनाम्
Through actions involving fathers, mothers, friends, brothers, wives, the wealthy, the learned, the poor, and ascetics—
उक्तं दैन्यं च विविधं त्यक्त्वा लज्जां जनार्दन देवतिर्यङ्मनुष्येषु स्थावरेषु चरेषु च
I have spoken of various forms of misery, abandoning shame, O Janardana, among gods, animals, humans, immobile and moving beings.
न विद्यते तथा स्थानं यत्राहं न गतः प्रभो कदा मे नरके वासः कदा स्वर्गे जगत्पते
There is no place, O Lord, where I have not gone; when have I dwelt in hell, when in heaven, O Lord of the world?
कदा मनुष्यलोकेषु कदा तिर्यग्गतेषु च जलयन्त्रे यथा चक्रे घटी रज्जुनिबन्धना
When have I been among humans, when among animals, as in a water-wheel, like a pot bound by a rope?
याति चोर्ध्वम् अधश् चैव कदा मध्ये च तिष्ठति तथा चाहं सुरश्रेष्ठ कर्मरज्जुसमावृतः
It moves upward and downward, and sometimes remains in the middle; so too, O best of gods, am I enveloped by the rope of karma.
अधश् चोर्ध्वं तथा मध्ये भ्रमन् गच्छामि योगतः एवं संसारचक्रे ऽस्मिन् भैरवे रोमहर्षणे
I wander below, above, and in the middle, moving by the power of yoga; thus, in this dreadful wheel of samsara, O Romaharshana.
भ्रमामि सुचिरं कालं नान्तं पश्यामि कर्हिचित् न जाने किं करोम्य् अद्य हरे व्याकुलितेन्द्रियः
I wander for a long time, never seeing an end; I do not know what to do today, O Hari, my senses are agitated.
