शतानि पञ्च विप्रेभ्यो राजा हृष्टः प्रदत्तवान् स्त्रियः पीनपयोभाराः कञ्चुकैः स्वस्तनावृताः
The delighted king gave five hundred women to the Brahmins; women with full breasts, clad in bodices covering their chests.
मध्यहीनाश् च सुश्रोण्यः पद्मपत्त्रायतेक्षणाः हावभावान्वितग्रीवा बह्व्यो वलयभूषिताः
Many women, slender-waisted, with lotus-petal wide eyes, graceful necks adorned with gestures and expressions, and decorated with bangles.
पादनूपुरसंयुक्ताः पट्टदुकूलवाससः एकैकशो ऽददात् तस्मिन् काम्याश् च कामिनीर् बहूः
Adorned with anklets and dressed in fine silk garments, he gave many desirable women, each individually, in that place.
अर्थिभ्यो ब्राह्मणादिभ्यो हयमेधे द्विजोत्तमाः भक्ष्यं भोज्यं च संपूर्णं नानासंभारसंयुतम्
To those seeking, to Brahmins and others, at the horse sacrifice, O best of twice-born, he provided abundant food and drink, prepared with various ingredients.
खण्डकाद्यान्य् अनेकानि स्विन्नपक्वांश् च पिष्टकान् अन्नान्य् अन्यानि मेध्यांश् च घृतपूरांश् च खाण्डवान्
Many kinds of sweets and confections, cooked and baked, as well as other foods, pure offerings, and ghee-filled delicacies were served.
मधुरांस् तर्जितान् पूपान् अन्नं मृष्टं सुपाकिकम् प्रीत्यर्थं सर्वसत्त्वानां दीयते ऽन्नं पुनः पुनः
Sweet cakes, fried pastries, and well-cooked, delicious food were repeatedly given for the pleasure of all beings.
दत्तस्य दीयमानस्य धनस्यान्तो न विद्यते एवं दृष्ट्वा महायज्ञं देवदैत्याः सवारणाः
There is no end to the wealth given and distributed; seeing such a great sacrifice, the gods, demons, and their followers were amazed.
गन्धर्वाप्सरसः सिद्धा ऋषयश् च प्रजेश्वराः विस्मयं परमं याता दृष्ट्वा क्रतुवरं शुभम्
Gandharvas, Apsaras, Siddhas, sages, and lords of creatures all experienced supreme wonder upon witnessing that auspicious, excellent sacrifice.
पुरोधा मन्त्रिणो राजा हृष्टास् तत्रैव सर्वशः न तत्र मलिनः कश्चिन् न दीनो न क्षुधान्वितः
The priests, counselors, and the king were all delighted there; no one was dirty, distressed, or afflicted by hunger.
न वोपसर्गो न ग्लानिर् नाधयो व्याधयस् तथा नाकालमरणं तत्र न दंशो न ग्रहा विषम्
There was no adversity, no fatigue, no ailments or diseases; no untimely death, no bites, nor any harmful influences.
हृष्टपुष्टजनाः सर्वे तस्मिन् राज्ञो महोत्सवे ये च तत्र तपःसिद्धा मुनयश् चिरजीविनः
All the people were joyful and nourished at that royal festival, including the ascetics who had attained perfection and the long-lived sages.
न जातं तादृशं यज्ञं धनधान्यसमन्वितम् एवं स राजा विधिवद् वाजिमेधं द्विजोत्तमाः क्रतुं समापयाम् आस प्रासादं वैष्णवं तथा
No such sacrifice, endowed with wealth and grain, had ever occurred; thus, the king, according to the proper rites, completed the horse sacrifice and the Vaiṣṇava temple, O best of twice-born.
ब्रूहि नो देवदेवेश यत् पृच्छामः पुरातनम् यथा ताः प्रतिमाः पूर्वम् इन्द्रद्युम्नेन निर्मिताः
Tell us, O Lord of gods, what we ask of ancient times: how those images were formerly made by Indradyumna.
केन चैव प्रकारेण तुष्टस् तस्मै स माधवः तत् सर्वं वद चास्माकं परं कौतूहलं हि नः
And by what means Mādhava was pleased with him; tell us everything, for we are greatly curious.
शृणुध्वं मुनिशार्दूलाः पुराणं वेदसंमितम् कथयामि पुरा वृत्तं प्रतिमानां च संभवम्
Listen, O tiger among sages, to the ancient account in accord with the Vedas; I will narrate what happened before and the origin of the images.
प्रवृत्ते च महायज्ञे प्रासादे चैव निर्मिते चिन्ता तस्य बभूवाथ प्रतिमार्थम् अहर्निशम्
When the great sacrifice began and the temple was constructed, he became anxious day and night about the images.
न वेद्मि केन देवेशं सर्वेशं लोकपावनम् सर्गस्थित्यन्तकर्तारं पश्यामि पुरुषोत्तमम्
I do not know by whom I might see the Lord of gods, purifier of all, creator, sustainer, and destroyer of the worlds, the Supreme Person.
चिन्ताविष्टस् त्व् अभूद् राजा शेते रात्रौ दिवापि न न भुङ्क्ते विविधान् भोगान् न च स्नानं प्रसाधनम्
The king, absorbed in anxiety, neither slept at night nor by day; he did not enjoy various pleasures, nor did he bathe or adorn himself.
नैव वाद्येन गन्धेन गायनैर् वर्णकैर् अपि न गजैर् मदयुक्तैश् च न चानेकैर् हयान्वितैः
He took no delight in music, fragrance, singing, or colors, nor in elephants intoxicated with rut, nor in many horses.
नेन्द्रनीलैर् महानीलैः पद्मरागमयैर् न च सुवर्णरजताद्यैश् च वज्रस्फटिकसंयुतैः
Nor in great sapphires, blue gems, rubies, nor in gold, silver, and other precious stones adorned with diamonds and crystal.
बहुरागार्थकामैर् वा न वन्यैर् अन्तरिक्षगैः बभूव तस्य नृपतेर् मनसस् तुष्टिवर्धनम्
Neither by many objects of passion and desire, nor by wild things or those dwelling in the sky, did the king's mind find increased satisfaction.
शैलमृद्दारुजातेषु प्रशस्तं किं महीतले विष्णुप्रतिमायोग्यं च सर्वलक्षणलक्षितम्
Among stones, clay, and wood found on earth, what is praised as suitable for a form of Viṣṇu, bearing all auspicious marks?
एतैर् एव त्रयाणां तु दयितं स्यात् सुरार्चितम् स्थापिते प्रीतिम् अभ्येति इति चिन्तापरो ऽभवत्
Of these three, the one beloved and worshipped by the gods, when established, brings joy; thus he became absorbed in this thought.
पञ्चरात्रविधानेन संपूज्य पुरुषोत्तमम् चिन्ताविष्टो महीपालः संस्तोतुम् उपचक्रमे
According to the Pañcarātra method, having worshipped the Supreme Person, the king, immersed in contemplation, began to praise Him.
वासुदेव नमस् ते ऽस्तु नमस् ते मोक्षकारण त्राहि मां सर्वलोकेश जन्मसंसारसागरात्
O Vāsudeva, salutations to You! Salutations to You, cause of liberation. Protect me, Lord of all worlds, from the ocean of birth and worldly existence.
निर्मलाम्बरसंकाश नमस् ते पुरुषोत्तम संकर्षण नमस् ते ऽस्तु त्राहि मां धरणीधर
Salutations to You, O Supreme Person, whose appearance is like pure garments. Salutations to You, Saṃkarṣaṇa. Protect me, bearer of the earth.
नमस् ते हेमगर्भाभ नमस् ते मकरध्वज रतिकान्त नमस् ते ऽस्तु त्राहि मां संवरान्तक
Salutations to You, whose radiance is like gold. Salutations to You, Makaradhvaja, beloved of Rati. Salutations to You; protect me, destroyer of obstacles.
नमस् ते ऽञ्जनसंकाश नमस् ते भक्तवत्सल अनिरुद्ध नमस् ते ऽस्तु त्राहि मां वरदो भव
Salutations to You, whose hue is like collyrium. Salutations to You, who cherish devotees. Salutations to You, Aniruddha. Protect me, bestower of boons.
नमस् ते विबुधावास नमस् ते विबुधप्रिय नारायण नमस् ते ऽस्तु त्राहि मां शरणागतम्
Salutations to You, abode of the gods. Salutations to You, beloved of the gods. Salutations to You, Nārāyaṇa. Protect me, who has sought refuge.
नमस् ते बलिनां श्रेष्ठ नमस् ते लाङ्गलायुध चतुर्मुख जगद्धाम त्राहि मां प्रपितामह
Salutations to You, foremost among the strong. Salutations to You, wielder of the plough. Four-faced, foundation of the world, protect me, ancestor of all.
