रथैर् नागैः पदातैश् च वाजिभिर् धनविस्तरैः संप्राप्ता बहुशो विप्राः श्रुत्वेन्द्रद्युम्नशासनम्
Many learned Brahmins arrived, having heard Indradyumna's command, coming with chariots, elephants, infantry, horses, and abundant wealth.
तान् आगतान् नृपान् दृष्ट्वा सामात्यान् सपुरोहितान् प्रोवाच राजा हृष्टात्मा कार्यम् उद्दिश्य सादरम्
Seeing those assembled kings, along with their ministers and priests, the king, his heart gladdened, respectfully addressed them regarding his purpose.
शृणुध्वं नृपशार्दूला यथा किंचिद् ब्रवीम्य् अहम् अस्मिन् क्षेत्रवरे पुण्ये भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदे शिवे
Hear me, O best of kings, as I speak briefly about this most excellent and holy field, which bestows both enjoyment and liberation.
हयमेधं महायज्ञं प्रासादं चैव वैष्णवम् कथं शक्नोम्य् अहं कर्तुम् इति चिन्ताकुलं मनः
My mind is troubled, pondering how I might accomplish the great horse-sacrifice, the supreme sacrifice, and the construction of a Vaishnava temple.
भवद्भिः सुसहायैस् तु सर्वम् एतत् करोम्य् अहम् यदि यूयं सहाया मे भवध्वं नृपसत्तमाः
With your excellent assistance, O foremost of kings, I can accomplish all this, if you will become my helpers.
इत्य् एवं वदमानस्य राजराजस्य धीमतः सर्वे प्रमुदिता हृष्टा भूपास् ते तस्य शासनात्
As the wise king of kings spoke thus, all the kings, delighted and joyful, responded at his command.
ववृषुर् धनरत्नैश् च सुवर्णमणिमौक्तिकैः कम्बलाजिनरत्नैश् च राङ्कवास्तरणैः शुभैः
They showered him with wealth and jewels, with gold, gems, pearls, fine blankets, deerskins, precious rugs, and splendid carpets.
वज्रवैदूर्यमाणिक्यैः पद्मरागेन्द्रनीलकैः गजैर् अश्वैर् धनैश् चान्यै रथैश् चैव करेणुभिः
With diamonds, cat's-eye gems, rubies, lotus gems, sapphires, elephants, horses, other riches, chariots, and female elephants.
असंख्येयैर् बहुविधैर् द्रव्यैर् उच्चावचैस् तथा शालिव्रीहियवैश् चैव माषमुद्गतिलैस् तथा
With countless and various goods, both high and low in value, and with rice, barley, wheat, beans, and sesame seeds.
सिद्धार्थचणकैश् चैव गोधूमैर् मसुरादिभिः श्यामाकैर् मधुकैश् चैव नीवारैः सकुलत्थकैः
With siddhartha, chickpeas, wheat, lentils and the like, with wild millet, honey, nivara rice, and kulattha beans.
अन्यैश् च विविधैर् धान्यैर् ग्राम्यारण्यैः सहस्रशः बहुधान्यसहस्राणां तण्डुलानां च राशिभिः
With other diverse grains, both cultivated and wild, by the thousands, and with heaps of thousands of different kinds of rice.
गव्यस्य हविषः कुम्भैः शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः तथान्यैर् विविधैर् द्रव्यैर् भक्ष्यभोज्यानुलेपनैः
With hundreds and thousands of jars of cow's ghee for offerings, and with other various goods, foods, cooked dishes, and ointments.
राजानः पूरयाम् आसुर् यत् किंचिद् द्रव्यसंभवैः तान् दृष्ट्वा यज्ञसंभारान् सर्वसंपत्समन्वितान्
The kings filled all needs with whatever resources they had; seeing those sacrificial materials, endowed with every prosperity—
यज्ञकर्मविदो विप्रान् वेदवेदाङ्गपारगान् शास्त्रेषु निपुणान् दक्षान् कुशलान् सर्वकर्मसु
He saw Brahmins skilled in sacrificial rites, accomplished in the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, expert in the scriptures, and adept in all rituals.
ऋषींश् चैव महर्षींश् च देवर्षींश् चैव तापसान् ब्रह्मचारिगृहस्थांश् च वानप्रस्थान् यतींस् तथा
He saw sages, great sages, divine sages, ascetics, celibates, householders, forest-dwellers, and renunciants as well.
स्नातकान् ब्राह्मणांश् चान्यान् अग्निहोत्रे सदा स्थितान् आचार्योपाध्यायवरान् स्वाध्यायतपसान्वितान्
He saw graduates and other Brahmins, always engaged in fire-offerings, distinguished teachers and preceptors, devoted to study and austerity.
सदस्याञ् शास्त्रकुशलांस् तथान्यान् पावकान् बहून् दृष्ट्वा तान् नृपतिः श्रीमान् उवाच स्वं पुरोहितम्
He saw members of the assembly skilled in the scriptures, and many other pure souls; seeing them, the illustrious king spoke to his own priest.
ततः प्रयान्तु विद्वांसो ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः वाजिमेधार्थसिद्ध्यर्थं देशं पश्यन्तु यज्ञियम्
Let the learned Brahmins, accomplished in the Vedas, now proceed to the sacrificial ground to ensure the success of the horse-sacrifice.
इत्य् उक्तः स तथा चक्रे वचनं तस्य भूपतेः हृष्टः स मन्त्रिभिः सार्धं तदा राजपुरोहितः
Thus addressed, he acted accordingly to the words of the king, delighted together with his ministers, that royal priest.
ततो ययौ पुरोधाश् च प्राज्ञः स्थपतिभिः सह ब्राह्मणान् अग्रतः कृत्वा कुशलान् यज्ञकर्मणि
Then the wise priest departed with the architects, placing skilled Brahmins in sacrificial rites at the forefront.
तं देशं धीवरग्रामं सप्रतोलिविटङ्किनम् कारयाम् आस विप्रो ऽसौ यज्ञवाटं यथाविधि
In that region, the village of fishermen with its lanes and alleys, that Brahmin began to construct the sacrificial enclosure according to prescribed rules.
प्रासादशतसंबाधं मणिप्रवरशोभितम् इन्द्रसद्मनिभं रम्यं हेमरत्नविभूषितम्
Crowded with hundreds of palaces, adorned with precious gems, splendid like Indra’s mansion, embellished with gold and jewels.
स्तम्भान् कनकचित्रांश् च तोरणानि बृहन्ति च यज्ञायतनदेशेषु दत्त्वा शुद्धं च काञ्चनम्
He placed pillars decorated with gold and grand gateways, and pure gold in the areas designated for the sacrificial site.
अन्तःपुराणि राज्ञां च नानादेशनिवासिनाम् कारयाम् आस धर्मात्मा तत्र तत्र यथाविधि
He caused the inner chambers for the kings from various regions to be constructed, righteous in conduct, each according to proper custom.
ब्राह्मणानां च वैश्यानां नानादेशसमीयुषाम् कारयाम् आस विधिवच् छालास् तत्राप्य् अनेकशः
He also arranged, in accordance with the rules, numerous halls for Brahmins and merchants who had come from different regions.
प्रियार्थं तस्य नृपतेर् आययुर् नृपसत्तमाः रत्नान्य् अनेकान्य् आदाय स्त्रियश् चाययुर् उत्सवे
For the king’s pleasure, eminent rulers arrived, bringing many jewels, and women also came for the festival.
तेषां निर्विशतां स्वेषु शिबिरेषु महात्मनाम् नदतः सागरस्येव दिविस्पृग् अभवद् ध्वनिः
As those great souls entered their own camps, the sound arose like the roar of the ocean, reaching the heavens.
तेषाम् अभ्यागतानां च स राजा मुनिसत्तमाः व्यादिदेशायतनानि शय्याश् चाप्य् उपचारतः
For those who had arrived, the king, foremost among sages, assigned dwellings and beds for their comfort.
भोजनानि विचित्राणि शालीक्षुयवगोरसैः उपेत्य नृपतिश्रेष्ठो व्यादिदेश स्वयं तदा
The best among kings personally arranged various foods made from rice, sugarcane, barley, and cow’s milk.
तथा तस्मिन् महायज्ञे बहवो ब्रह्मवादिनः ये च द्विजातिप्रवरास् तत्रासन् द्विजसत्तमाः
Likewise, at that great sacrifice, many expounders of Brahman and distinguished twice-borns were present, O best of Brahmins.
