दृश्यन्ते मुनिशार्दूलाः सुसस्याः सुमनोहराः हृष्टपुष्टजनाकीर्णा वस्त्रालंकारभूषिताः
O best of sages, there are seen fertile and delightful lands, filled with joyful and prosperous people, adorned with garments and ornaments.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्रास् तत्र पृथक् पृथक् स्वधर्मनिरताः शान्ता दृश्यन्ते शुभलक्षणाः
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras are seen there, each devoted to their own duties, peaceful, and possessing auspicious marks.
ताम्बूलपूर्णवदना मालादामविभूषिताः वेदपूर्णमुखा विप्राः सषडङ्गपदक्रमाः
With mouths filled with betel, adorned with garlands, the Brahmins are seen, their mouths full of the Vedas, versed in the six limbs and the pada-krama.
अग्निहोत्ररताः केचित् केचिद् औपासनक्रियाः सर्वशास्त्रार्थकुशला यज्वानो भूरिदक्षिणाः
Some are devoted to the Agnihotra, others to the rites of upasana, skilled in the meaning of all the scriptures, sacrificers, and generous with gifts.
चत्वारे राजमार्गेषु वनेषूपवनेषु च सभामण्डलहर्म्येषु देवतायतनेषु च
At the four royal crossroads, in forests and groves, in assembly halls, palace mansions, and temples of the gods,
इतिहासपुराणानि वेदाः साङ्गाः सुलक्षणाः काव्यशास्त्रकथास् तत्र श्रूयन्ते च महाजनैः
histories and ancient tales, the Vedas with their branches, auspicious treatises, and discussions of poetry and science are heard there among the people.
स्त्रियस् तद्देशवासिन्यो रूपयौवनगर्विताः संपूर्णलक्षणोपेता विस्तीर्णश्रोणिमण्डलाः
The women dwelling in that land are proud of their beauty and youth, endowed with all auspicious marks, with broad and shapely hips.
सरोरुहमुखाः श्यामाः शरच्चन्द्रनिभाननाः पीनोन्नतस्तनाः सर्वाः समृद्ध्या चारुदर्शनाः
Their faces are like lotuses, their complexion dark, their countenances resembling the autumn moon; all have full, high breasts and are radiant with prosperity and lovely to behold.
सौवर्णवलयाक्रान्ता दिव्यैर् वस्त्रैर् अलंकृताः कदलीगर्भसंकाशाः पद्मकिञ्जल्कसप्रभाः
Adorned with golden bangles and divine garments, they resemble the inside of a banana blossom and shine with the brilliance of lotus filaments.
बिम्बाधरपुटाः कान्ताः कर्णान्तायतलोचनाः सुमुखाश् चारुकेशाश् च हावभावावनामिताः
Charming, with lips like ripe bimba fruit, their eyes long and reaching to their ears, with beautiful faces and lovely hair, they are graceful in movement and expression.
काश्चित् पद्मपलाशाक्ष्यः काश्चिद् इन्दीवरेक्षणाः विद्युद्विस्पष्टदशनास् तन्वङ्ग्यश् च तथापराः
Some have eyes like lotus petals, some like blue lilies; others have teeth as bright as lightning and slender bodies.
कुटिलालकसंयुक्ताः सीमन्तेन विराजिताः ग्रीवाभरणसंयुक्ता माल्यदामविभूषिताः
With curling locks, adorned at the parting of their hair, wearing necklaces and garlands as ornaments,
कुण्डलै रत्नसंयुक्तैः कर्णपूरैर् मनोहरैः देवयोषित्प्रतीकाशा दृश्यन्ते शुभलक्षणाः
Wearing earrings set with jewels, with enchanting ear ornaments, they appear as celestial women, marked by auspicious signs.
दिव्यगीतवरैर् धन्यैः क्रीडमाना वराङ्गनाः वीणावेणुमृदङ्गैश् च पणवैश् चैव गोमुखैः
Blessed women of excellent form play, accompanied by divine songs, with vīṇā, flute, drum, and also with paṇava and gomukha instruments.
शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैर् नानावाद्यैर् मनोहरैः क्रीडन्त्यस् ताः सदा हृष्टा विलासिन्यः परस्परम्
With the resounding of conches and drums, and various delightful instruments, those ever-joyful, playful women sport together.
एवमादि तथानेकगीतवाद्यविशारदाः दिवा रात्रौ समायुक्ताः कामोन्मत्ता वराङ्गनाः
Thus, skilled in many kinds of song and music, these excellent women, maddened by desire, gather together day and night.
भिक्षुवैखानसैः सिद्धैः स्नातकैर् ब्रह्मचारिभिः मन्त्रसिद्धैस् तपःसिद्धैर् यज्ञसिद्धैर् निषेवितम्
It is served by ascetics, forest-dwellers, perfected beings, graduates, celibates, those accomplished in mantras, austerities, and sacrifices.
इत्य् एवं ददृशे राजा क्षेत्रं परमशोभनम् अत्रैवाराधयिष्यामि भगवन्तं सनातनम्
Thus the king beheld a supremely beautiful field, and thought, 'Here I will worship the eternal Lord.'
जगद्गुरुं परं देवं परं पारं परं पदम् सर्वेश्वरेश्वरं विष्णुम् अनन्तम् अपराजितम्
The teacher of the world, the supreme god, the highest shore, the supreme abode, the lord of all lords—Viṣṇu, infinite and unconquered.
इदं तन्मानसं तीर्थं ज्ञातं मे पुरुषोत्तमम् कल्पवृक्षो महाकायो न्यग्रोधो यत्र तिष्ठति
This, then, is that supreme tīrtha of the mind, known to me as Puruṣottama, where the great wish-fulfilling banyan tree stands.
प्रतिमा चेन्द्रनीलाख्या स्वयं देवेन गोपिता न चात्र दृश्यते चान्या प्रतिमा वैष्णवी शुभा
And there is an image called Indranīla, protected by the god himself; no other auspicious Vaiṣṇava image is seen here.
तथा यत्नं करिष्यामि यथा देवो जगत्पतिः प्रत्यक्षं मम चाभ्येति विष्णुः सत्यपराक्रमः
Therefore I shall make every effort so that the god, lord of the world, Viṣṇu of unfailing valor, may appear before me.
यज्ञैर् दानैस् तपोभिश् च होमैर् ध्यानैस् तथार्चनैः उपवासैश् च विधिवच् चरेयं व्रतम् उत्तमम्
With sacrifices, gifts, austerities, oblations, meditations, worship, and proper fasting, I shall observe this supreme vow.
अनन्यमनसा चैव तन्मना नान्यमानसः विष्ण्वायतनविन्यासे प्रारम्भं च करोम्य् अहम्
With an undistracted mind, intent solely on that, and with no other thought, I begin the establishment of the temple of Viṣṇu.
एवं स पृथिवीपालश् चिन्तयित्वा द्विजोत्तमाः प्रासादार्थं हरेस् तत्र प्रारम्भम् अकरोत् तदा
Thus, having reflected in this way, O best of twice-born, the king then began the construction there of a temple for Hari.
आनाय्य गणकान् सर्वान् आचार्याञ् शास्त्रपारगान् भूमिं संशोध्य यत्नेन राजा तु परया मुदा
Summoning all the calculators and teachers accomplished in the scriptures, the king, with great joy, carefully purified the ground.
ब्राह्मणैर् ज्ञानसंपन्नैर् वेदशास्त्रार्थपारगैः अमात्यैर् मन्त्रिभिश् चैव वास्तुविद्याविशारदैः
With learned brāhmaṇas skilled in the meaning of the Vedas and śāstras, and with ministers and counselors expert in the science of architecture,
तैः सार्धं स समालोच्य सुमुहूर्ते शुभे दिने सुचन्द्रतारासंयोगे ग्रहानुकूल्यसंयुते
Consulting with them, on an auspicious day and at a favorable hour, with the moon and stars well aligned and the planets propitious,
जयमङ्गलशब्दैश् च नानावाद्यैर् मनोहरैः वेदाध्ययननिर्घोषैर् गीतैः सुमधुरस्वरैः
With sounds of victory and blessing, with various delightful instruments, with the resonant chanting of the Vedas and songs of sweet melody,
पुष्पलाजाक्षतैर् गन्धैः पूर्णकुम्भैः सदीपकैः ददाव् अर्घ्यं ततो राजा श्रद्धया सुसमाहितः
With flowers, grains, rice, fragrances, full pots with lamps, the king then offered arghya with faith and full concentration.
