सर्वलक्षणसंपूर्णं सर्वेन्द्रियविवर्जितम् कूटस्थम् अचलं सूक्ष्मं ज्योतीरूपं सनातनम्
Perfect in all auspicious marks, beyond all senses, unchanging, unmoving, subtle, of the form of light, and eternal.
भावाभावविनिर्मुक्तं व्यापिनं प्रकृतेः परम् नमस्यामि जगन्नाथम् ईश्वरं सुखदं प्रभुम्
Free from existence and non-existence, all-pervading, beyond nature, I bow to the lord of the universe, the giver of happiness, the supreme ruler.
इत्य् एवं धर्मराजस् तु पुरा न्यग्रोधसंनिधौ स्तुत्वा नानाविधैः स्तोत्रैः प्रणामम् अकरोत् तदा
Thus, long ago, King Dharma, in the presence of the banyan tree, praised him with various hymns and then offered his obeisance.
तं दृष्ट्वा तु महाभागे प्रणतं प्राञ्जलिस्थितम् स्तोत्रस्य कारणं देवि पृष्टवान् अहम् अन्तकम्
Seeing that exalted one bowing with joined palms, O goddess, I, Antaka, asked him the reason for his hymn.
वैवस्वत महाबाहो सर्वदेवोत्तमो ह्य् असि किमर्थं स्तुतवान् मां त्वं संक्षेपात् तद् ब्रवीहि मे
"O Vaivasvata, mighty-armed, supreme among all gods, for what purpose have you praised me? Tell me this briefly."
अस्मिन्न् आयतने पुण्ये विख्याते पुरुषोत्तमे इन्द्रनीलमयी श्रेष्ठा प्रतिमा सार्वकामिकी
In this sacred and renowned abode of the Supreme Person, there is an excellent image made of sapphire, fulfilling all desires.
तां दृष्ट्वा पुण्डरीकाक्ष भावेनैकेन श्रद्धया श्वेताख्यं भवनं यान्ति निष्कामाश् चैव मानवाः
Seeing that image, O lotus-eyed one, with single-minded devotion and faith, men who are free from desire reach the white-named abode.
अतः कर्तुं न शक्नोमि व्यापारम् अरिसूदन प्रसीद सुमहादेव संहर प्रतिमां विभो
Therefore, O slayer of enemies, I am unable to perform my duties. Be gracious, O great lord, withdraw the image, O master.
श्रुत्वा वैवस्वतस्यैतद् वाक्यम् एतद् उवाच ह यम तां गोपयिष्यामि सिकताभिः समन्ततः
Hearing these words of Vaivasvata, Yama said: "I will conceal it all around with sand."
ततः सा प्रतिमा देवि वल्लिभिर् गोपिता मया यथा तत्र न पश्यन्ति मनुजाः स्वर्गकाङ्क्षिणः
Then, O goddess, I concealed that image with creepers, so that men desiring heaven would not see it there.
प्रच्छाद्य वल्लिकैर् देवि जातरूपपरिच्छदैः यमं प्रस्थापयाम् आस स्वां पुरीं दक्षिणां दिशम्
Covering it with creepers and golden ornaments, Yama sent him to his own city in the southern direction.
लुप्तायां प्रतिमायां तु इन्द्रनीलस्य भो द्विजाः तस्मिन् क्षेत्रवरे पुण्ये विख्याते पुरुषोत्तमे
When the image of sapphire was hidden, O twice-born, in that sacred and renowned field of the Supreme Person—
यो भूतस् तत्र वृत्तान्तो देवदेवो जनार्दनः तं सर्वं कथयाम् आस स तस्यै भगवान् पुरा
Whatever event took place there, the god of gods, Janārdana, told all of it to her long ago.
इन्द्रद्युम्नस्य गमनं क्षेत्रसंदर्शनं तथा क्षेत्रस्य वर्णनं चैव प्रासादकरणं तथा
The departure of Indradyumna, his viewing of the field, the description of the field, and the construction of the temple—
हयमेधस्य यजनं स्वप्नदर्शनम् एव च लवणस्योदधेस् तीरे काष्ठस्य दर्शनं तथा
The performance of the horse sacrifice, the vision in a dream, and the sight of the wood on the shore of the salt ocean—
दर्शनं वासुदेवस्य शिल्पिराजस्य च द्विजाः निर्माणं प्रतिमायास् तु यथावर्णं विशेषतः

स्थापनं चैव सर्वेषां प्रासादे भुवनोत्तमे यात्राकाले च विप्रेन्द्राः कल्पसंकीर्तनं तथा

मार्कण्डेयस्य चरितं स्थापनं शंकरस्य च पञ्चतीर्थस्य माहात्म्यं दर्शनं शूलपाणिनः
The story of Markandeya, the installation of Shankara, the glory of the five sacred fords, and the vision of the wielder of the trident—
वटस्य दर्शनं चैव व्युष्टिं तस्य च भो द्विजाः दर्शनं बलदेवस्य कृष्णस्य च विशेषतः
The vision of the banyan tree, and its merit, O twice-born, and especially the sight of Baladeva and Krishna—
सुभद्रायाश् च तत्रैव माहात्म्यं चैव सर्वशः दर्शनं नरसिंहस्य व्युष्टिसंकीर्तनं तथा
And there, the glory of Subhadra in its entirety, the vision of Narasimha, and the recitation of the merit of the dawn—
अनन्तवासुदेवस्य दर्शनं गुणकीर्तनम् श्वेतमाधवमाहात्म्यं स्वर्गद्वारस्य दर्शनम्
The vision of Anantavasudeva, the praise of his qualities, the glory of Shvetamadhava, and the sight of Svargadvāra—
उदधेर् दर्शनं चैव स्नानं तर्पणम् एव च समुद्रस्नानमाहात्म्यम् इन्द्रद्युम्नस्य च द्विजाः
The sight of the ocean, as well as bathing and offering libations, the greatness of bathing in the sea, and of Indradyumna, O twice-born—
पञ्चतीर्थफलं चैव महाज्येष्ठं तथैव च स्थानं कृष्णस्य हलिनः पर्वयात्राफलं तथा
The fruit of the five sacred fords, and also the great Jyeshtha, the place of Krishna with the plough, and the fruit of the festival pilgrimage—
वर्णनं विष्णुलोकस्य क्षेत्रस्य च पुनः पुनः पूर्वं कथितवान् सर्वं तस्यै स पुरुषोत्तमः
The repeated description of Vishnu's world and of the holy field—all this the Supreme Person had previously told her.
श्रोतुम् इच्छामहे देव कथाशेषं महीपतेः तस्मिन् क्षेत्रवरे गत्वा किं चकार नराधिपः
We wish to hear, O god, the remainder of the story of the king; having gone to that excellent field, what did the lord of men do?
शृणुध्वं मुनिशार्दूलाः प्रवक्ष्यामि समासतः क्षेत्रसंदर्शनं चैव कृत्यं तस्य च भूपतेः
Listen, O best of sages, I will briefly relate the viewing of the field and the deeds of that king.
गत्वा तत्र महीपालः क्षेत्रे त्रैलोक्यविश्रुते ददर्श रमणीयानि स्थानानि सरितस् तथा
Having gone there, the king, in the field renowned throughout the three worlds, beheld beautiful places and rivers as well.
नदी तत्र महापुण्या विन्ध्यपादविनिर्गता स्वित्त्रोपलेति विख्याता सर्वपापहरा शिवा
There is a river there, of great merit, emerging from the foot of the Vindhya, known as Svittropala, auspicious and remover of all sins.
गङ्गातुल्या महास्रोता दक्षिणार्णवगामिनी महानदीति नाम्ना सा पुण्यतोया सरिद्वरा
Equal to the Ganga, with a great current, flowing to the southern ocean, that best of rivers is called Mahānadi, with holy waters.
दक्षिणस्योदधेर् गर्भं गतावर्तातिशोभिता उभयोस् तटयोर् यस्या ग्रामाश् च नगराणि च
Adorned with beautiful eddies, entering the womb of the southern ocean, on both its banks are seen villages and cities.
