कमलैः शतपत्त्रैश् च कह्लारैः कुमुदोत्पलैः खगैर् जलचरैश् चान्यैः पुष्पैर् जलसमुद्भवैः
With lotuses, hundred-petaled lotuses, blue lotuses, water lilies, and other aquatic birds, as well as flowers born from the water.
पर्वतैर् दीप्तशिखरैश् चारुकन्दरमण्डितैः नानावृक्षसमाकीर्णैर् नानाधातुविभूषितैः
With mountains of blazing peaks, adorned with beautiful caves, crowded with various trees, and embellished with many kinds of minerals.
सर्वाश्चर्यमयैः शृङ्गैः सर्वभूतालयैः शुभैः सर्वौषधिसमायुक्तैर् विपुलैश् चित्रसानुभिः
With all-wondrous summits, auspicious abodes of all beings, endowed with every medicinal herb, and with broad, variegated slopes.
एवं सर्वैः समुदितैः शोभितं सुमनोहरैः ददर्श स महीपालः स्थानं त्रैलोक्यपूजितम्
Thus, adorned with all these delightful and splendid features, that king beheld the place revered by the three worlds.
दशयोजनविस्तीर्णं पञ्चयोजनम् आयतम् नानाश्चर्यसमायुक्तं क्षेत्रं परमदुर्लभम्
Spanning ten yojanas in breadth and five yojanas in length, a field endowed with many marvels, supremely difficult to attain.
तस्मिन् क्षेत्रवरे पुण्ये वैष्णवे पुरुषोत्तमे किं तत्र प्रतिमा पूर्वं न स्थिता वैष्णवी प्रभो
In that excellent, sacred, Vaiṣṇava, and supreme field, O Lord, why was there previously no Vaiṣṇava image established there?
येनासौ नृपतिस् तत्र गत्वा सबलवाहनः स्थापयाम् आस कृष्णं च रामं भद्रां शुभप्रदाम्
For what reason did that king, having gone there with his army and vehicles, establish Kṛṣṇa, Rāma, and the auspicious Bhadrā?
संशयो नो महान् अत्र विस्मयश् च जगत्पते श्रोतुम् इच्छामहे सर्वं ब्रूहि तत्कारणं च नः
A great doubt and wonder arise for us here, O Lord of the world; we wish to hear everything—tell us also the reason for this.
शृणुध्वं पूर्वसंवृत्तां कथां पापप्रणाशिनीम् प्रवक्ष्यामि समासेन श्रिया पृष्टः पुरा हरिः
Hear now the ancient tale that destroys sin; I shall briefly recount it, as once told by Hari when questioned by Śrī.
सुमेरोः काञ्चने शृङ्गे सर्वाश्चर्यसमन्विते सिद्धविद्याधरैर् यक्षैः किंनरैर् उपशोभिते
On the golden peak of Mount Sumeru, filled with every marvel, adorned by siddhas, vidyādharas, yakṣas, and kinnaras.
देवदानवगन्धर्वैर् नागैर् अप्सरसां गणैः मुनिभिर् गुह्यकैः सिद्धैः सौपर्णैः समरुद्गणैः
By gods, dānavas, gandharvas, nāgas, hosts of apsarases, sages, guhyakas, siddhas, suparṇas, and companies of Maruts.
अन्यैर् देवालयैः साध्यैः कश्यपाद्यैः प्रजेश्वरैः वालखिल्यादिभिश् चैव शोभिते सुमनोहरे
By other divine beings, sādhyas, progenitors like Kaśyapa, and by Vālakhilyas and others, making it splendid and most delightful.
कर्णिकारवनैर् दिव्यैः सर्वर्तुकुसुमोत्करैः जातरूपप्रतीकाशैर् भूषिते सूर्यसंनिभैः
With divine groves of karṇikāra trees, abundant with flowers of every season, adorned with golden brilliance, shining like the sun.
अन्यैश् च बहुभिर् वृक्षैः शालतालादिभिर् वनैः पुंनागाशोकसरलन्यग्रोधाम्रातकार्जुनैः
And with many other trees, with forests of śāla, tāla, and others, with puṃnāga, aśoka, sarala, banyan, mango, āmra, and arjuna trees.
पारिजाताम्रखदिरनीपबिल्वकदम्बकैः धवखादिरपालाशशीर्षामलकतिन्दुकैः
With pārijāta, amra, khadira, anīpa, bilva, kadamba, dhava, khādira, pālāśa, śīrṣa, amalaka, and tinduka trees,
नारिङ्गकोलबकुललोध्रदाडिमदारुकैः सर्जैश् च कर्णैस् तगरैः शिशिभूर्जवनिम्बकैः
With nāriṅga, kola, bakula, lodhra, pomegranate, dāruka, sarja, karṇa, tagara, śiśi, bhūrja, and vanimba trees,
अन्यैश् च काञ्चनैश् चैव फलभारैश् च नामितैः नानाकुसुमगन्धाढ्यैर् भूषिते पुष्पपादपैः
And with other golden trees, bent under the weight of their fruits, adorned with diverse fragrant flowers,
मालतीयूथिकामल्लीकुन्दबाणकुरुण्टकैः पाटलागस्त्यकुटजमन्दारकुसुमादिभिः
With mālatī, yūthikā, mallī, kunda, bāṇa, kuruṇṭaka, pāṭala, agastya, kuṭaja, mandāra, and other flowers,
अन्यैश् च विविधैः पुष्पैर् मनसः प्रीतिदायकैः नानाविहगसंघैश् च कूजद्भिर् मधुरस्वरैः
And with various other flowers that delight the mind, and flocks of birds singing with sweet voices,
पुंस्कोकिलरुतैर् दिव्यैर् मत्तबर्हिणनादितैः एवं नानाविधैर् वृक्षैः पुष्पैर् नानाविधैस् तथा
With the divine calls of male cuckoos and the cries of intoxicated peacocks, thus with trees of many kinds and flowers of many kinds,
खगैर् नानाविधैश् चैव शोभिते सुरसेविते तत्र स्थितं जगन्नाथं जगत्स्रष्टारम् अव्ययम्
Adorned by birds of many kinds, served by the gods, there stood the Lord of the universe, the imperishable creator of the world,
सर्वलोकविधातारं वासुदेवाख्यम् अव्ययम् प्रणम्य शिरसा देवी लोकानां हितकाम्यया पप्रच्छेमं महाप्रश्नं पद्मजा तम् अनुत्तमम्
The imperishable Vāsudeva, creator of all worlds; the goddess, desiring the welfare of all beings, bowed her head and asked the supreme question of the lotus-born one,
ब्रूहि त्वं सर्वलोकेश संशयं मे हृदि स्थितम् मर्त्यलोके महाश्चर्ये कर्मभूमौ सुदुर्लभे
Speak, O Lord of all worlds, the doubt that remains in my heart regarding the wondrous and rare field of action in the mortal realm,
लोभमोहग्रहग्रस्ते कामक्रोधमहार्णवे येन मुच्येत देवेश अस्मात् संसारसागरात्
When one is seized by greed, delusion, and the planets, in the vast ocean of desire and anger, by what means, O Lord of gods, may one be freed from this ocean of worldly existence?
आचक्ष्व सर्वदेवेश प्रणतां यदि मन्यसे त्वदृते नास्ति लोके ऽस्मिन् वक्ता संशयनिर्णये
Tell me, O Lord of all gods, for I bow to you, if you consider me worthy; for apart from you, there is no one in this world who can resolve doubts.
श्रुत्वैवं वचनं तस्या देवदेवो जनार्दनः प्रोवाच परया प्रीत्या परं सारामृतोपमम्
Hearing these words from her, the god of gods, Janārdana, spoke with supreme affection, words of the highest essence, like nectar.
सुखोपास्यः सुसाध्यश् च ऽभिरामश् च सुसत्फलः आस्ते तीर्थवरे देवि विख्यातः पुरुषोत्तमः
He is easy to worship, easy to attain, delightful, and yields excellent results; the supreme person resides in the foremost sacred place, O goddess, renowned everywhere.
न तेन सदृशः कश्चित् त्रिषु लोकेषु विद्यते कीर्तनाद् यस्य देवेशि मुच्यते सर्वपातकैः
No one like him exists in the three worlds; by praising him, O goddess of the gods, one is freed from all sins.
न विज्ञातो ऽमरैः सर्वैर् न दैत्यैर् न च दानवैः मरीच्याद्यैर् मुनिवरैर् गोपितं मे वरानने
He is not known by all the immortals, nor by demons or danavas, nor by the great sages like Marīci; he is concealed by me, O beautiful-faced one.
तत् ते ऽहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि तीर्थराजं च सांप्रतम् भावेनैकेन सुश्रोणि शृणुष्व वरवर्णिनि
Therefore, I will now tell you about the king of sacred places; listen, O lovely one, with undivided attention.
