सुमध्यमाश् चारुवेषाश् चारुकर्णालकाञ्चिताः ताम्बूलरञ्जितमुखा रक्षिभिश् च सुरक्षिताः
With slender waists, charming attire, and lovely curled hair, their mouths reddened by betel, all well-guarded by attendants,
यानैर् उच्चावचैः शुभ्रैर् मणिकाञ्चनभूषितैः उपगीयमानास् ताः सर्वा गायनैः स्तुतिपाठकैः
In vehicles high and low, bright and adorned with jewels and gold, all were accompanied by singers and reciters of praises.
वेष्टिताः शस्त्रहस्तैश् च पद्मपत्त्रायतेक्षणाः ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्या अनुजग्मुश् च तं नृपम्
Surrounded by armed guards, their eyes long as lotus petals, Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas also followed that king.
वणिग्ग्रामगणाः सर्वे नानापुरनिवासिनः धनै रत्नैः सुवर्णैश् च सदाराः सपरिच्छदाः
All the merchant guilds and groups from various towns, with their wealth, jewels, and gold, accompanied by their wives and retinues,
अस्त्रविक्रयकाश् चैव ताम्बूलपण्यजीविनः तृणविक्रयकाश् चैव काष्ठविक्रयकारकाः
Those who sold weapons, those who lived by selling betel, those who sold grass, and those who dealt in wood,
रङ्गोपजीविनः सर्वे मांसविक्रयिणस् तथा तैलविक्रयकाश् चैव वस्त्रविक्रयकास् तथा
All who made their living from the stage, sellers of meat, sellers of oil, and sellers of cloth,
फलविक्रयिणश् चैव पत्त्रविक्रयिणस् तथा तथा जवसहाराश् च रजकाश् च सहस्रशः
Sellers of fruit, sellers of leaves, and likewise those who carried burdens and the washermen, all by the thousands,
गोपाला नापिताश् चैव तथान्ये वस्त्रसूचकाः मेषपालाश् चाजपाला मृगपालाश् च हंसकाः
Cowherds, barbers, and also others who sewed garments, shepherds of sheep and goats, keepers of deer, and those who tended swans,
धान्यविक्रयिणश् चैव सक्तुविक्रयिणश् च ये गुडविक्रयिकाश् चैव तथा लवणजीविनः
Sellers of grain, sellers of parched flour, sellers of jaggery, and those who lived by selling salt,
गायना नर्तकाश् चैव तथा मङ्गलपाठकाः शैलूषाः कथकाश् चैव पुराणार्थविशारदाः
Singers, dancers, and likewise reciters of auspicious hymns, actors, storytellers, and those skilled in the meanings of ancient tales.
कवयः काव्यकर्तारो नानाकाव्यविशारदाः विषघ्ना गारुडाश् चैव नानारत्नपरीक्षकाः
Poets, creators of poetry, skilled in various kinds of verse; poison-curers, experts in Garuda lore, and examiners of many kinds of gems—
व्योकारास् ताम्रकाराश् च कांस्यकाराश् च रूठकाः कौषकाराश् चित्रकाराः कुन्दकाराश् च पावकाः
Metalworkers, coppersmiths, makers of bronze, goldsmiths, silk-weavers, painters, potters, and fire-workers—
दण्डकाराश् चासिकाराः सुराधूतोपजीविनः मल्ला दूताश् च कायस्था ये चान्ये कर्मकारिणः
Stick-makers, sword-makers, those who live by brewing liquor, wrestlers, messengers, scribes, and others who perform various tasks—
तन्तुवाया रूपकारा वार्तिकास् तैलपाठकाः लावजीवास् तैत्तिरिका मृगपक्ष्युपजीविनः
Weavers, image-makers, artisans, oil-pressers, those who live by selling fried grain, fowlers, and those who subsist on wild animals and birds—
गजवैद्याश् च वैद्याश् च नरवैद्याश् च ये नराः वृक्षवैद्याश् च गोवैद्या ये चान्ये छेददाहकाः
Elephant doctors, physicians, human doctors, tree doctors, cow doctors, and others who perform cutting and cauterizing—
एते नागरकाः सर्वे ये चान्ये नानुकीर्तिताः अनुजग्मुस् तु राजानं समस्तपुरवासिनः
All these townspeople, and others not mentioned, followed the king—all the inhabitants of the city.
यथा व्रजन्तं पितरं ग्रामान्तरं समुत्सुकाः अनुयान्ति यथा पुत्रास् तथा तं ते ऽपि नागराः
Just as sons, eager, follow their father when he goes to another village, so too did those townspeople follow him.
एवं स नृपतिः श्रीमान् वृतः सर्वैर् महाजनैः हस्त्यश्वरथपादातैर् जगाम च शनैः शनैः
Thus that illustrious king, surrounded by all the great people, with elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry, proceeded slowly.
एवं गत्वा स नृपतिर् दक्षिणस्योदधेस् तटम् सर्वैस् तैर् दीर्घकालेन बलैर् अनुगतः प्रभुः
Having gone in this way, the king, followed for a long time by all those forces, reached the southern shore of the ocean.
ददर्श सागरं रम्यं नृत्यन्तम् इव च स्थितम् अनेकशतसाहस्रैर् ऊर्मिभिश् च समाकुलम्
He beheld the beautiful ocean, standing as if dancing, crowded with countless hundreds of thousands of waves.
नानारत्नालयं पूर्णं नानाप्राणिसमाकुलम् वीचीतरङ्गबहुलं महाश्चर्यसमन्वितम्
Filled with various gems, teeming with many living creatures, abundant with waves and billows, endowed with great wonders—
तीर्थराजं महाशब्दम् अपारं सुभयंकरम् मेघवृन्दप्रतीकाशम् अगाधं मकरालयम्
The king of sacred fords, resounding with a mighty roar, boundless, greatly fearsome, resembling a mass of clouds, unfathomable, the abode of makaras—
मत्स्यैः कूर्मैश् च शङ्खैश् च शुक्तिकानक्रशङ्कुभिः शिंशुमारैः कर्कटैश् च वृतं सर्पैर् महाविषैः
Filled with fish, turtles, conches, oysters, crocodiles, spikes, porpoises, crabs, and great venomous serpents—
लवणोदं हरेः स्थानं शयनस्य नदीपतिम् सर्वपापहरं पुण्यं सर्ववाञ्छाफलप्रदम्
The salt ocean, the resting place of Hari, the lord of rivers, destroyer of all sins, holy, and bestower of all desires—
अनेकावर्तगम्भीरं दानवानां समाश्रयम् अमृतस्यारणिं दिव्यं देवयोनिम् अपां पतिम्
Profound with countless whirlpools, the refuge of the Dānavas, the churning rod for nectar, divine, the source of the gods, the lord of waters—
विशिष्टं सर्वभूतानां प्राणिनां जीवधारणम् सुपवित्रं पवित्राणां मङ्गलानां च मङ्गलम्
Distinguished among all beings, the sustainer of living creatures, supremely pure among the pure, the auspicious among the auspicious—
तीर्थानाम् उत्तमं तीर्थम् अव्ययं यादसां पतिम् चन्द्रवृद्धिक्षयस्येव यस्य मानं प्रतिष्ठितम्
The foremost of sacred fords, imperishable, lord of aquatic beings, whose measure is fixed like the waxing and waning of the moon—
अभेद्यं सर्वभूतानां देवानाम् अमृतालयम् उत्पत्तिस्थितिसंहारहेतुभूतं सनातनम्
Impenetrable to all beings, the abode of immortality for the gods, the eternal cause of creation, preservation, and destruction—
उपजीव्यं च सर्वेषां पुण्यं नदनदीपतिम् दृष्ट्वा तं नृपतिश्रेष्ठो विस्मयं परमं गतः
Seeing that lord of rivers and streams, the source of merit for all, the best of kings was filled with utmost wonder.
निवासम् अकरोत् तत्र वेलाम् असाद्य सागरीम् पुण्ये मनोहरे देशे सर्वभूमिगुणैर् युते
He made his dwelling there, upon the ocean shore, in a holy and delightful land endowed with all the virtues of the earth.
