मातरश् च मुनिश्रेष्ठाः सर्वकामफलप्रदाः दृष्ट्वा तान् विधिवद् भक्त्या संपूज्य प्रणिपत्य च
And the Mothers, O best of sages, bestowers of all desired fruits; seeing them, worshipping them properly with devotion, and bowing down—
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो नरो याति त्रिविष्टपम् एवं सा नगरी रम्या राजसिंहेन पालिता
Freed from all sins, a man goes to heaven; thus is that delightful city ruled by the lion among kings.
नित्योत्सवप्रमुदिता यथेन्द्रस्यामरावती पुराष्टादशसंयुक्ता सुविस्तीर्णचतुष्पथा
Always joyful with constant festivals, like Indra’s Amarāvatī, joined with eighteen city gates, and broad fourfold roads.
धनुर्ज्याघोषनिनदा सिद्धसंगमभूषिता विद्यावद्गणभूयिष्ठा वेदनिर्घोषनादिता
Resounding with the twang of bowstrings, adorned by gatherings of accomplished beings, filled with assemblies of learned men, and echoing with the chants of the Vedas.
इतिहासपुराणानि शास्त्राणि विविधानि च काव्यालापकथाश् चैव श्रूयन्ते ऽहर्निशं द्विजाः
Epics, ancient tales, various treatises, and poetic stories are heard day and night, O twice-born ones.
एवं मया गुणाढ्या सा तदुयिनी?? समुदाहृता यस्यां राजाभवत् पूर्वम् इन्द्रद्युम्नो महामतिः
Thus, I have described that land, endowed with virtues, where in former times the great-minded king Indradyumna was born.
तस्यां स नृपतिः पूर्वं कुर्वन् राज्यम् अनुत्तमम् पालयाम् आस मतिमान् प्रजाः पुत्रान् इवौरसान्
In that land, the wise king once ruled an unrivaled kingdom, protecting his subjects as if they were his own sons.
सत्यवादी महाप्राज्ञः शूरः सर्वगुणाकरः मतिमान् धर्मसंपन्नः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः
Truthful, greatly wise, heroic, a repository of all virtues, intelligent, endowed with righteousness, and foremost among all wielders of weapons.
सत्यवाञ् शीलवान् दान्तः श्रीमान् परपुरंजयः आदित्य इव तेजोभी रूपैर् आश्विनयोर् इव
Truthful in speech, of noble character, self-controlled, illustrious, conqueror of enemy cities, radiant like the sun, and handsome like the Ashvins.
वर्धमानसुराश्चर्यः शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः शारदेन्दुर् इवाभाति लक्षणैः समलंकृतः
Ever-increasing in wondrous deeds, equal in valor to Indra, he shone with auspicious marks, like the autumn moon.
आहर्ता सर्वयज्ञानां हयमेधादिकृत् तथा दानैर् यज्ञैस् तपोभिश् च तत्तुल्यो नास्ति भूपतिः
Performer of all sacrifices, including the horse-sacrifice, there was no other king equal to him in gifts, sacrifices, or austerities.
सुवर्णमणिमुक्तानां गजाश्वानां च भूपतिः प्रददौ विप्रमुख्येभ्यो यागे यागे महाधनम्
He gave abundant gold, jewels, pearls, elephants, and horses to the foremost Brahmins at every sacrifice.
हस्त्यश्वरथमुख्यानां कम्बलाजिनवाससाम् रत्नानां धनधान्यानाम् अन्तस् तस्य न विद्यते
Of elephants, horses, chariots, fine woolens, skins, garments, jewels, wealth, and grain—there was no limit within his realm.
एवं सर्वधनैर् युक्तो गुणैः सर्वैर् अलंकृतः सर्वकामसमृद्धात्मा कुर्वन् राज्यम् अकण्टकम्
Thus endowed with all riches, adorned with every virtue, fulfilled in all desires, he ruled his kingdom without affliction.
तस्येयं मतिर् उत्पन्ना सर्वयोगेश्वरं हरिम् कथम् आराधयिष्यामि भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं प्रभुम्
To him arose this thought: 'How shall I worship Hari, Lord of all Yogis, who grants both enjoyment and liberation?'
विचार्य सर्वशास्त्राणि तन्त्राण्य् आगमविस्तरम् इतिहासपुराणानि वेदाङ्गानि च सर्वशः
Having considered all treatises, tantras, the expanse of the Āgamas, epics, ancient tales, and all the limbs of the Veda,
धर्मशास्त्राणि सर्वाणि नियमान् ऋषिभाषितान् वेदाङ्गानि च शास्त्राणि विद्यास्थानानि यानि च
All the treatises on dharma, the disciplines spoken by sages, the limbs of the Veda, and the sources of knowledge—he examined them all.
गुरुं संसेव्य यत्नेन ब्राह्मणान् वेदपारगान् आधाय परमां काष्ठां कृतकृत्यो ऽभवत् तदा
By diligently serving his teacher and the foremost Brahmins learned in the Veda, and attaining the highest goal, he then became one who had fulfilled his purpose.
संप्राप्य परमं तत्त्वं वासुदेवाख्यम् अव्ययम् भ्रान्तिज्ञानाद् अतीतस् तु मुमुक्षुः संयतेन्द्रियः
Having realized the supreme, imperishable truth known as Vāsudeva, freed from delusion and ignorance, he became a seeker of liberation, with senses restrained.
कथम् आराधयिष्यामि देवदेवं सनातनम् पीतवस्त्रं चतुर्बाहुं शङ्खचक्रगदाधरम्
How shall I worship the eternal God of gods, clad in yellow garments, four-armed, bearing the conch, discus, and mace?
वनमालावृतोरस्कं पद्मपत्त्रायतेक्षणम् श्रीवत्सोरःसमायुक्तं मुकुटाङ्गदशोभितम्
Adorned with a garland of forest flowers upon his chest, with eyes wide as lotus petals, marked with the Śrīvatsa on his breast, shining with crown and armlets.
स्वपुरात् स तु निष्क्रान्त उज्जयिन्याः प्रजापतिः बलेन महता युक्तः सभृत्यः सपुरोहितः
Then the lord of the people departed from his own city of Ujjayinī, accompanied by a great force, with his attendants and priests.
अनुजग्मुस् तु तं सर्वे रथिनः शस्त्रपाणयः रथैर् विमानसंकाशैः पताकाध्वजसेवितैः
All the charioteers, bearing weapons in hand, followed him in chariots that resembled celestial vehicles, adorned with banners and flags.
सादिनश् च तथा सर्वे प्रासतोमरपाणयः अश्वैः पवनसंकाशैर् अनुजग्मुस् तु तं नृपम्
Likewise, all the horsemen, holding spears and maces, followed that king on horses swift as the wind.
हिमवत्संभवैर् मत्तैर् वारणैः पर्वतोपमैः ईषादन्तैः सदा मत्तैः प्रचण्डैः षष्टिहायनैः
With elephants born in the Himalayas, intoxicated and mountain-like, with slightly curved tusks, always in rut, fierce, and sixty years old,
हेमकक्षैः सपताकैर् घण्टारवविभूषितैः अनुजग्मुश् च तं सर्वे गजयुद्धविशारदाः
With golden armor, adorned with banners and decorated with the sound of bells, all the expert elephant warriors followed him.
असंख्येयाश् च पादाता धनुष्प्रासासिपाणयः दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरा दिव्यगन्धानुलेपनाः
Countless foot soldiers, bearing bows, spears, and swords, wearing divine garlands and garments, and anointed with heavenly fragrances,
अनुजग्मुश् च तं सर्वे युवानो मृष्टकुण्डलाः सर्वास्त्रकुशलाः शूराः सदा संग्रामलालसाः
All of them, young men with polished earrings, skilled in all weapons, valiant, and always eager for battle, followed him.
अन्तःपुरनिवासिन्यः स्त्रियः सर्वाः स्वलंकृताः बिम्बौष्ठचारुदशनाः सर्वाभरणभूषिताः
All the women residing in the inner chambers, fully adorned, with lips like bimba fruit and beautiful teeth, adorned with every ornament,
दिव्यवस्त्रधराः सर्वा दिव्यमाल्यविभूषिताः दिव्यगन्धानुलिप्ताङ्गाः शरच्चन्द्रनिभाननाः
All wearing divine garments, adorned with celestial garlands, their bodies anointed with heavenly scents, their faces radiant like the autumn moon,
