विविधैः पादपैः पुण्यैर् उद्यानैर् विविधैस् तथा जलस्थलचरैश् चैव विहगैश् चार्वधिष्ठितैः
With various auspicious trees, diverse gardens, and birds and animals dwelling both on land and in water,
देवतायतनैर् दिव्यैः शोभिता सा महापुरी तत्रास्ते भगवान् देवस् त्रिपुरारिस् त्रिलोचनः
That great city is adorned with divine temples of the gods; there dwells the blessed god, the enemy of Tripura, the three-eyed one.
महाकालेति विख्यातः सर्वकामप्रदः शिवः शिवकुण्डे नरः स्नात्वा विधिवत् पापनाशने
He is renowned as Mahakala, the bestower of all desires, Shiva. Bathing properly in the Shiva-kunda, the destroyer of sins,
देवान् पितॄन् ऋषींश् चैव संतर्प्य विधिवद् बुधः गत्वा शिवालयं पश्चात् कृत्वा तं त्रिः प्रदक्षिणम्
After duly satisfying the gods, ancestors, and sages, the wise one, having gone to the temple of Shiva, should circumambulate it three times.
प्रविश्य संयतो भूत्वा धौतवासा जितेन्द्रियः स्नानैः पुष्पैस् तथा गन्धैर् धूपैर् दीपैश् च भक्तितः
Entering, self-controlled, wearing clean garments, with senses subdued, he should worship with baths, flowers, fragrances, incense, and lamps, with devotion.
नैवेद्यैर् उपहारैश् च गीतवाद्यैः प्रदक्षिणैः दण्डवत्प्रणिपातैश् च नृत्यैः स्तोत्रैश् च शंकरम्
With offerings of food, gifts, songs, music, circumambulations, prostrations, dances, and hymns, he should worship Shankara.
संपूज्य विधिवद् भक्त्या महाकालं सकृच् छिवम् अश्वमेधसहस्रस्य फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः
Having worshipped Mahākāla, who is Śiva, with proper rites and devotion even once, a person attains the fruit of a thousand horse sacrifices.
पापैः सर्वैर् विनिर्मुक्तो विमानैः सार्वकामिकैः आरुह्य त्रिदिवं याति यत्र शंभोर् निकेतनम्
Freed from all sins, ascending celestial vehicles that fulfill every desire, he goes to the third heaven, where the abode of Śambhu is.
दिव्यरूपधरः श्रीमान् दिव्यालंकारभूषितः भुङ्क्ते तत्र वरान् भोगान् यावद् आभूतसंप्लवम्
Assuming a divine form, adorned with celestial ornaments, he enjoys excellent pleasures there until the end of the cosmic cycle.
शिवलोके मुनिश्रेष्ठा जरामरणवर्जितः पुण्यक्षयाद् इहायातः प्रवरे ब्राह्मणे कुले
In the world of Śiva, O best of sages, free from old age and death, when his merit is exhausted, he is born here in the highest family of Brāhmaṇas.
चतुर्वेदी भवेद् विप्रः सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः योगं पाशुपतं प्राप्य ततो मोक्षम् अवाप्नुयात्
He becomes a Brāhmaṇa learned in all four Vedas and all scriptures, attains the Pāśupata yoga, and then reaches liberation.
आस्ते तत्र नदी पुण्या शिप्रा नामेति विश्रुता तस्यां स्नातस् तु विधिवत् संतर्प्य पितृदेवताः
There flows a holy river, renowned as Śiprā; whoever bathes there according to the proper rites and satisfies the ancestors and deities—
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विमानवरम् आस्थितः भुङ्क्ते बहुविधान् भोगान् स्वर्गलोके नरोत्तमः
Freed from all sins, ascending an excellent celestial vehicle, the best of men enjoys various pleasures in the world of the gods.
आस्ते तत्रैव भगवान् देवदेवो जनार्दनः गोविन्दस्वामिनामासौ भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदो हरिः
There itself resides the blessed Lord, the god of gods, Janārdana; he is called Govinda, the master, Hari, the bestower of enjoyment and liberation.
तं दृष्ट्वा मुक्तिम् आप्नोति त्रिसप्तकुलसंयुतः विमानेनार्कवर्णेन किङ्किणीजालमालिना
Seeing him, together with his twenty-one generations, one attains liberation, ascending a celestial vehicle shining like the sun, adorned with a network of tinkling bells.
सर्वकामसमृद्धेन कामगेनास्थिरेण च उपगीयमानो गन्धर्वैर् विष्णुलोके महीयते
Endowed with all fulfilled desires, riding a wish-yielding, unfailing vehicle, praised by the Gandharvas, he is honored in the world of Viṣṇu.
भुङ्क्ते च विविधान् कामान् निरातङ्को गतज्वरः आभूतसंप्लवं यावत् सुरूपः सुभगः सुखी
He enjoys various pleasures, free from distress and suffering, handsome, fortunate, and happy, until the end of the cosmic cycle.
कालेनागत्य मतिमान् ब्राह्मणः स्यान् महीतले प्रवरे योगिनां गेहे वेदशास्त्रार्थतत्त्ववित्
When the time comes, he is born as a wise Brāhmaṇa on earth, in the house of the best yogins, knowing the true meaning of the Vedas and scriptures.
वैष्णवं योगम् आस्थाय ततो मोक्षम् अवाप्नुयात् विक्रमस्वामिनामानं विष्णुं तत्रैव भो द्विजाः
Having taken up Vaiṣṇava yoga, he then attains liberation; there, O twice-born ones, is Viṣṇu named Vikramasvāmin.
दृष्ट्वा नरो वा नारी वा फलं पूर्वोदितं लभेत् अन्ये ऽपि तत्र तिष्ठन्ति देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः
Whether man or woman, seeing him attains the previously described fruit; other gods also dwell there, led by Indra.
मातरश् च मुनिश्रेष्ठाः सर्वकामफलप्रदाः दृष्ट्वा तान् विधिवद् भक्त्या संपूज्य प्रणिपत्य च
And the Mothers, O best of sages, bestowers of all desired fruits; seeing them, worshipping them properly with devotion, and bowing down—
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो नरो याति त्रिविष्टपम् एवं सा नगरी रम्या राजसिंहेन पालिता
Freed from all sins, a man goes to heaven; thus is that delightful city ruled by the lion among kings.
नित्योत्सवप्रमुदिता यथेन्द्रस्यामरावती पुराष्टादशसंयुक्ता सुविस्तीर्णचतुष्पथा
Always joyful with constant festivals, like Indra’s Amarāvatī, joined with eighteen city gates, and broad fourfold roads.
धनुर्ज्याघोषनिनदा सिद्धसंगमभूषिता विद्यावद्गणभूयिष्ठा वेदनिर्घोषनादिता
Resounding with the twang of bowstrings, adorned by gatherings of accomplished beings, filled with assemblies of learned men, and echoing with the chants of the Vedas.
इतिहासपुराणानि शास्त्राणि विविधानि च काव्यालापकथाश् चैव श्रूयन्ते ऽहर्निशं द्विजाः
Epics, ancient tales, various treatises, and poetic stories are heard day and night, O twice-born ones.
एवं मया गुणाढ्या सा तदुयिनी?? समुदाहृता यस्यां राजाभवत् पूर्वम् इन्द्रद्युम्नो महामतिः
Thus, I have described that land, endowed with virtues, where in former times the great-minded king Indradyumna was born.
तस्यां स नृपतिः पूर्वं कुर्वन् राज्यम् अनुत्तमम् पालयाम् आस मतिमान् प्रजाः पुत्रान् इवौरसान्
In that land, the wise king once ruled an unrivaled kingdom, protecting his subjects as if they were his own sons.
सत्यवादी महाप्राज्ञः शूरः सर्वगुणाकरः मतिमान् धर्मसंपन्नः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः
Truthful, greatly wise, heroic, a repository of all virtues, intelligent, endowed with righteousness, and foremost among all wielders of weapons.
सत्यवाञ् शीलवान् दान्तः श्रीमान् परपुरंजयः आदित्य इव तेजोभी रूपैर् आश्विनयोर् इव
Truthful in speech, of noble character, self-controlled, illustrious, conqueror of enemy cities, radiant like the sun, and handsome like the Ashvins.
वर्धमानसुराश्चर्यः शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः शारदेन्दुर् इवाभाति लक्षणैः समलंकृतः
Ever-increasing in wondrous deeds, equal in valor to Indra, he shone with auspicious marks, like the autumn moon.
