देवान् ऋषीन् मनुष्यांश् च पितॄन् संतर्प्य वाग्यतः तिलोदकेन विधिना नामगोत्रविधानवित्
Having satisfied gods, sages, humans, and ancestors with silent speech, using sesame water according to the prescribed method, knowing their names and lineages,
स्नात्वैवं विधिवत् तत्र सो ऽश्वमेधफलं लभेत् ग्रहोपरागे विषुवे संक्रान्त्याम् अयने तथा
By bathing there properly, one attains the fruit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice at the time of a lunar eclipse, equinox, solstice, or seasonal transition.
युगादिषु षडशीत्यां तथान्यत्र शुभे तिथौ ये तत्र दानं विप्रेभ्यः प्रयच्छन्ति धनादिकम्
At the beginnings of eras, on the eighty-sixth day, and on other auspicious dates, those who give gifts such as wealth to Brāhmins there,
अन्यतीर्थाच् छतगुणं फलं ते प्राप्नुवन्ति वै पिण्डं ये संप्रयच्छन्ति पितृभ्यः सरसस् तटे
They obtain a hundredfold greater result than at any other sacred place; those who offer rice balls to their ancestors on the shore of the lake,
पितॄणाम् अक्षयां तृप्तिं ते कुर्वन्ति न संशयः ततः शंभोर् गृहं गत्वा वाग्यतः संयतेन्द्रियः
They bring inexhaustible satisfaction to their ancestors—there is no doubt. Then, going to the house of Śambhu, with controlled speech and senses,
प्रविश्य पूजयेच् छर्वं कृत्वा तं त्रिः प्रदक्षिणम् घृतक्षीरादिभिः स्नानं कारयित्वा भवं शुचिः
Entering, one should worship Śarva, circling him three times, and, after bathing Bhava with ghee, milk, and other pure substances, remain clean.
चन्दनेन सुगन्धेन विलिप्य कुङ्कुमेन च ततः संपूजयेद् देवं चन्द्रमौलिम् उमापतिम्
After anointing him with fragrant sandalwood and kuṅkuma, one should then worship the god, the moon-crested, the spouse of Umā.
पुष्पैर् नानाविधैर् मेध्यैर् बिल्वार्ककमलादिभिः आगमोक्तेन मन्त्रेण वेदोक्तेन च शंकरम्
With various pure flowers—bilva, arka, lotus, and others—using mantras from the Āgamas and the Vedas, one should worship Śaṅkara.
अदीक्षितस् तु नाम्नैव मूलमन्त्रेण चार्चयेत् एवं संपूज्य तं देवं गन्धपुष्पानुरागिभिः
Even one not initiated should worship him by name and with the root mantra; thus, having worshipped the god with fragrant flowers,
धूपदीपैश् च नैवेद्यैर् उपहारैस् तथा स्तवैः दण्डवत्प्रणिपातैश् च गीतैर् वाद्यैर् मनोहरैः
With incense, lamps, offerings, and oblations, with hymns, prostrations, songs, and delightful music,
नृत्यजप्यनमस्कारैर् जयशब्दैः प्रदक्षिणैः एवं संपूज्य विधिवद् देवदेवम् उमापतिम्
With dance, recitation, salutations, cries of victory, and circumambulations—thus, having properly worshipped the god of gods, the spouse of Umā,
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो रूपयौवनगर्वितः कुलैकविंशम् उद्धृत्य दिव्याभरणभूषिताः
Freed from all sins, possessing beauty and youthful pride, having uplifted twenty-one generations of his lineage, adorned with divine ornaments,
सौवर्णेन विमानेन किङ्किणीजालमालिना उपगीयमानो गन्धर्वैर् अप्सरोभिर् अलंकृतः
Adorned with a golden aerial chariot, wreathed with tinkling bells, he is praised by Gandharvas and decorated by Apsaras.
उद्द्योतयन् दिशः सर्वाः शिवलोकं स गच्छति भुक्त्वा तत्र सुखं विप्रा मनसः प्रीतिदायकम्
Illuminating all directions, he goes to the world of Shiva, enjoying there a happiness that delights the mind, O Brahmins.
तल्लोकवासिभिः सार्धं यावद् आभूतसंप्लवम् ततस् तस्माद् इहायातः पृथिव्यां पुण्यसंक्षये
He remains there together with the inhabitants of that world until the great dissolution; then, when his merit is exhausted, he returns here to earth.
जायते योगिनां गेहे चतुर्वेदी द्विजोत्तमाः योगं पाशुपतं प्राप्य ततो मोक्षम् अवाप्नुयात्
He is born in the house of yogis, as a twice-born knower of the four Vedas; attaining the Pashupata yoga, he then obtains liberation.
शयनोत्थापने चैव संक्रान्त्याम् अयने तथा अशोकाख्यां तथाष्टम्यां पवित्रारोपणे तथा
At the time of rising from bed, during transitions of the sun, at the solstices, on the eighth day called Ashoka, and at the festival of purification—
ये च पश्यन्ति तं देवं कृत्तिवाससम् उत्तमम् विमानेनार्कवर्णेन शिवलोकं व्रजन्ति ते
Those who see that supreme god, clad in a hide, in a chariot shining like the sun, they go to the world of Shiva.
सर्वकाले ऽपि तं देवं ये पश्यन्ति सुमेधसः ते ऽपि पापविनिर्मुक्ताः शिवलोकं व्रजन्ति वै
Even those wise ones who see that god at any time, they too, freed from all sin, truly go to the world of Shiva.
देवस्य पश्चिमे पूर्वे दक्षिणे चोत्तरे तथा योजनद्वितयं सार्धं क्षेत्रं तद् भुक्तिमुक्तिदम्
To the west, east, south, and north of the god, for two and a half yojanas, that field bestows both enjoyment and liberation.
तस्मिन् क्षेत्रवरे लिङ्गं भास्करेश्वरसंज्ञितम् पश्यन्ति ये तु तं देवं स्नात्वा कुण्डे महेश्वरम्
In that excellent field, those who see the linga called Bhaskaresvara, after bathing in the sacred pond, behold the great Lord.
आदित्येनार्चितं पूर्वं देवदेवं त्रिलोचनम् सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्ता विमानवरम् आस्थिताः
That Lord of gods, the three-eyed one, was formerly worshipped by the sun; those who see him, freed from all sin, ascend to the supreme chariot.
उपगीयमाना गन्धर्वैः शिवलोकं व्रजन्ति ते तिष्ठन्ति तत्र मुदिताः कल्पम् एकं द्विजोत्तमाः
Praised by Gandharvas, they go to the world of Shiva and remain there, joyful, for a kalpa, O best of Brahmins.
भुक्त्वा तु विपुलान् भोगाञ् शिवलोके मनोरमान् पुण्यक्षयाद् इहायाता जायन्ते प्रवरे कुले
Having enjoyed abundant and delightful pleasures in Shiva's world, when their merit is spent, they are born here in a noble family.
अथवा योगिनां गेहे वेदवेदाङ्गपारगाः उत्पद्यन्ते द्विजवराः सर्वभूतहिते रताः
Or, they are born in the house of yogis, as excellent twice-born ones, accomplished in the Vedas and Vedangas, devoted to the welfare of all beings.
मोक्षशास्त्रार्थकुशलाः सर्वत्र समबुद्धयः योगं शंभोर् वरं प्राप्य ततो मोक्षं व्रजन्ति ते
Skilled in the meaning of the scriptures on liberation, equal-minded everywhere, having attained the supreme yoga of Shambhu, they then go to liberation.
तस्मिन् क्षेत्रवरे पुण्ये लिङ्गं यद् दृश्यते द्विजाः पूज्यापूज्यं च सर्वत्र वने रथ्यान्तरे ऽपि वा
In that excellent and holy field, O Brahmins, wherever a linga is seen—whether worshipped or not, in the forest or by the roadside—
चतुष्पथे श्मशाने वा यत्र कुत्र च तिष्ठति दृष्ट्वा तल् लिङ्गम् अव्यग्रः श्रद्धया सुसमाहितः
Whether at a crossroads, in a cremation ground, or wherever it stands, seeing that linga without distraction, with faith and full concentration—
स्नापयित्वा तु तं भक्त्या गन्धैः पुष्पैर् मनोहरैः धूपैर् दीपैः सनैवेद्यैर् नमस्कारैस् तथा स्तवैः
Bathing it with devotion, with fragrant substances and delightful flowers, with incense, lamps, offerings, salutations, and hymns—
दण्डवत्प्रणिपातैश् च नृत्यगीतादिभिस् तथा संपूज्यैवं विधानेन शिवलोकं व्रजेन् नरः
With prostrations, with dance, song, and the like, worshipping in this manner, a man goes to the world of Shiva.
