पूर्वागतेन गन्तव्यं मार्गेण वरवर्णिनि न मे सुराः प्रयच्छन्ति भागं यज्ञस्य धर्मतः
O one of lovely complexion, one must go by the previously established path; the gods do not give me a rightful share of the sacrifice.
भगवन् सर्वदेवेषु प्रभावाभ्यधिको गुणैः अजेयश् चाप्य् अधृष्यश् च तेजसा यशसा श्रिया
O blessed one, among all gods you surpass in power and virtues; you are unconquerable, unassailable, radiant, renowned, and glorious.
अनेन तु महाभाग प्रतिषेधेन भागतः अतीव दुःखम् आपन्ना वेपथुश् च महान् अयम्
By this exclusion from the share, O greatly fortunate, I have suffered great sorrow, and this trembling is immense.
किं नाम दानं नियमं तपो वा कुर्याम् अहं येन पतिर् ममाद्य लभेत भागं भगवान् अचिन्त्यो यज्ञस्य चेन्द्राद्यमरैर् विचित्रम्
What gift, discipline, or austerity should I perform, so that my lord today might obtain a share, O wondrous one, in the sacrifice, among Indra and the other gods?
अहं विजानामि विशालनेत्रे ध्यानेन सर्वे च विदन्ति सन्तः तवाद्य मोहेन सहेन्द्रदेवा लोकत्रयं सर्वम् अथो विनष्टम्
I know, O wide-eyed one, through meditation, and all the virtuous know as well; but today, through your delusion, along with Indra and the gods, all three worlds are destroyed.
माम् अध्वरेशं नितरां स्तुवन्ति रथंतरं साम गायन्ति मह्यम् मां ब्राह्मणा ब्रह्ममन्त्रैर् यजन्ति ममाध्वर्यवः कल्पयन्ते च भागम्
They praise me as lord of the sacrifice; they sing the Rathantara Sāma for me; the Brahmins worship me with Brahma-mantras; my priests prepare my share.
विकत्थसे प्राकृतवत् सर्वस्त्रीजनसंसदि स्तौषि गर्वायसे चापि स्वम् आत्मानं न संशयः
You boast like an ordinary person in the assembly of all women; you praise yourself out of pride—there is no doubt.
नात्मानं स्तौमि देवेशि यथा त्वम् अनुगच्छसि संस्रक्ष्यामि वरारोहे भागार्थे वरवर्णिनि
O goddess of the gods, I do not praise myself as you do; O lovely one, for the sake of the share, I will protect you.
इत्य् उक्त्वा भगवान् पत्नीम् उमां प्राणैर् अपि प्रियाम् सो ऽसृजद् भगवान् वक्त्राद् भूतं क्रोधाग्निसंभवम्
Having spoken thus to his wife Uma, most dear even to his life, the blessed lord created from his mouth a being born from the fire of wrath.
तम् उवाच मखं गच्छ दक्षस्य त्वं महेश्वरः नाशयाशु क्रतुं तस्य दक्षस्य मदनुज्ञया
He said to him: Go to the sacrifice, you are Maheshvara of Daksha; swiftly destroy his ritual, with my permission.
ततो रुद्रप्रयुक्तेन सिंहवेषेण लीलया देव्या मन्युकृतं ज्ञात्वा हतो दक्षस्य स क्रतुः
Then, knowing that the sacrifice of Daksha was destroyed by the wrath of the goddess, who, at Rudra's command, had assumed the form of a lion for sport,
मन्युना च महाभीमा भद्रकाली महेश्वरी आत्मनः कर्मसाक्षित्वे तेन सार्धं सहानुगा
And Bhadrakali, the great and fearsome Maheshvari, accompanied by her followers, became a witness to her own deed, joined together with that wrath.
स एष भगवान् क्रोधः प्रेतावासकृतालयः वीरभद्रेति विख्यातो देव्या मन्युप्रमार्जकः
This is that divine being, Wrath, who made the abode of the spirits his dwelling, renowned as Virabhadra, the one who wipes away the goddess's anger.
सो ऽसृजद् रोमकूपेभ्य आत्मनैव गणेश्वरान् रुद्रानुगान् गणान् रौद्रान् रुद्रवीर्यपराक्रमान्
He then created, from the pores of his own body, the lords of the hosts—followers of Rudra, fierce hosts born of Rudra's power and might.
रुद्रस्यानुचराः सर्वे सर्वे रुद्रपराक्रमाः ते निपेतुस् ततस् तूर्णं शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः
All these attendants of Rudra, each possessing Rudra's might, swiftly descended there by the hundreds and thousands.
ततः किलकिलाशब्द आकाशं पूरयन्न् इव समभूत् सुमहान् विप्राः सर्वरुद्रगणैः कृतः
Then arose a tremendous clamor, as if filling the sky, created by all the hosts of Rudra, O sages.
तेन शब्देन महता त्रस्ताः सर्वे दिवौकसः पर्वताश् च व्यशीर्यन्त चकम्पे च वसुंधरा
Terrified by that great sound, all the dwellers of heaven were shaken; the mountains crumbled and the earth itself trembled.
मरुतश् च ववुः क्रूराश् चुक्षुभे वरुणालयः अग्नयो वै न दीप्यन्ते न चादीप्यत भास्करः
The winds blew violently, the abode of Varuna was disturbed, the fires would not burn, and the sun did not shine.
ग्रहा नैव प्रकाशन्ते नक्षत्राणि न तारकाः ऋषयो न प्रभासन्ते न देवा न च दानवाः
The planets did not shine, nor the stars or constellations; the sages gave no radiance, nor did the gods or the demons.
एवं हि तिमिरीभूते निर्दहन्ति गणेश्वराः प्रभञ्जन्त्य् अपरे यूपान् घोरान् उत्पाटयन्ति च
Thus, when darkness prevailed, the lords of the hosts began to burn everything; others broke and uprooted the terrible sacrificial posts.
प्रणदन्ति तथा चान्ये विकुर्वन्ति तथा परे त्वरितं वै प्रधावन्ति वायुवेगा मनोजवाः
Some roared, others made strange noises, and yet others rushed about swiftly, moving as fast as the wind and the mind.
चूर्ण्यन्ते यज्ञपात्राणि यज्ञस्यायतनानि च शीर्यमाणान्य् अदृश्यन्त तारा इव नभस्तलात्
The sacrificial vessels and the altars of the sacrifice were shattered; as they broke apart, they vanished like stars from the sky.
दिव्यान्नपानभक्ष्याणां राशयः पर्वतोपमाः क्षीरनद्यस् तथा चान्या घृतपायसकर्दमाः
Heaps of celestial food and drink, as massive as mountains, and rivers of milk and others of ghee, sweet rice, and curds appeared.
मधुमण्डोदका दिव्याः खण्डशर्करवालुकाः षड्रसान् निवहन्त्य् अन्या गुडकुल्या मनोरमाः
There were divine streams of honeyed water, sands of crystal sugar, and other delightful channels of molasses, carrying all six tastes.
उच्चावचानि मांसानि भक्ष्याणि विविधानि च यानि कानि च दिव्यानि लेह्यचोष्याणि यानि च
There were meats of every kind, high and low, and all sorts of celestial delicacies—whatever could be licked or sucked.
भुञ्जन्ति विविधैर् वक्त्रैर् विलुम्पन्ति क्षिपन्ति च रुद्रकोपा महाकोपाः कालाग्निसदृशोपमाः
With many mouths they ate, plundered, and scattered the food; filled with Rudra's wrath, their fury was like the fire of destruction.
भक्षयन्तो ऽथ शैलाभा भीषयन्तश् च सर्वतः क्रीडन्ति विविधाकाराश् चिक्षिपुः सुरयोषितः
Devouring like mountains, terrifying all around, they played in many forms and hurled the celestial women about.
एवं गणाश् च तैर् युक्तो वीरभद्रः प्रतापवान् रुद्रकोपप्रयुक्तश् च सर्वदेवैः सुरक्षितम्
Thus, surrounded by these hosts, the mighty Virabhadra, empowered by Rudra's wrath, was protected by all the gods.
तं यज्ञम् अदहच् छीघ्रं भद्रकाल्याः समीपतः चक्रुर् अन्ये तथा नादान् सर्वभूतभयंकरान्
They swiftly destroyed that sacrifice near Bhadrakālī, and others made dreadful sounds that struck terror into all beings.
छित्त्वा शिरो ऽन्ये यज्ञस्य व्यनदन्त भयंकरम् ततः शक्रादयो देवा दक्षश् चैव प्रजापतिः ऊचुः प्राञ्जलयो भूत्वा कथ्यतां को भवान् इति
Others cut off the head of the sacrifice and uttered terrifying cries; then Indra and the other gods, along with Dakṣa the progenitor, with joined palms, said: 'Tell us, who are you?'
