Whoever sings this wondrous festival of Hari before the gods and brahmins, he, equal to the unmatched lord of the hosts, shall, after leaving his body, attain happiness.
O best of brahmins, whoever hears or recites this hymn is honored by the gods in all worlds, like the king of immortals.
When the god had entered the house and was seated upon the excellent seat, that crooked and cruel Manmatha became intent on striking the god.
That wicked one, joined with misconduct, of evil mind and lowest of his lineage, who tormented all worlds and whose form was a covering over all limbs—
He who causes obstacles for the sages, along with their vows and observances, appeared in the form of the one called Cakra, together with Rati.
Then, O brahmins, the lord of the gods, wishing to strike that aggressor, looked upon him with his third eye, casting a glance full of disdain.
Then, from his eye, fire arose, bearing thousands of garlands of flames, and at once burned up Rati's husband along with his attendants.
Burning, afflicted, and in pain, he cried out piteously in a distorted voice, seeking to appease the god, and fell to the ground.
Then Manmatha, his body consumed by fire, the tormentor of the worlds, suddenly fell unconscious in an instant.
But his wife, deeply distressed, lamented piteously; stricken with sorrow, she earnestly begged the goddess and the god for compassion.
Knowing her compassion, those two gods, full of mercy, looked upon her, comforted the sorrowful one, and spoke to her.
Certainly, O blessed one, he is burned and will not be reborn here; yet, even without a body, O blessed one, he will accomplish all his tasks.
But when the blessed Vishnu, son of Vasudeva, is born, then his son will become your husband.
Then, having received this boon, Kāmā's wife, her face radiant, went joyfully to her desired place, her fatigue gone.
After burning Kāmā, O brahmins, that god, the bull-bannered one, rejoiced there together with Umā on Mount Himālaya.
In beautiful caves, in lotus-filled ponds, in grottos, and in delightful waterfalls, and in forests of yellow-flowered trees—
On lovely riverbanks frequented by Kinnaras, on the peaks of the king of mountains, in lakes and pools—
In delightful groves resounding with many birds, at holy fords with sacred waters, and in the hermitages of sages—
In these sacred and delightful places, adorned by Vidyādharas and attended by Gandharvas, Yakṣas, and celestial beings, the three-eyed god enjoyed himself together with the goddess.
Surrounded by gods with Indra, sages, Yakṣas, Siddhas, Gandharvas, Vidyādharas, chief Daityas, and many other diverse beings, Śaṃbhu found joy on that mountain.
There, the Apsarases danced, the lords of gods sang, the joyful Gandharva hosts played divine instruments, and some swiftly praised the best of gods.
Thus, the god, accompanied by his powerful hosts—equal to Indra, Yama, and Agni—did not leave the mountain at that time, for the sake of pleasing the goddess, he who destroyed Bhaga's eye.
Standing there together with the goddess, the blessed one, the destroyer of desire, performed some act; what did Mahādeva do? We wish to know this.
The blessed one, on the peak of Himavat, for the sake of the goddess's pleasure, repeatedly caused laughter among his hosts of various forms.
Delighting the goddess, whose forehead bore the crescent mark, he enjoyed himself with noble, wise, and auspicious beings who could assume any form.
Then, the supreme goddess approached her mother, who was seated on a wondrous, shining golden seat.
Seeing Satī, the goddess, arriving in divine form, Menā, the beloved of Himavat, honored her faultless daughter with a splendid seat and then spoke to her.
After a long time you have come today, O daughter with auspicious eyes; tell me, are you poor in amusements, for you are united with your husband in play?
Those who are poor and without shelter, O Umā, they play in such a way as your husband does, O auspicious one.
Thus addressed by her mother, she was not very pleased; endowed with great patience, she said nothing, and, released by her mother, went to the god and spoke.
