कोयष्टिदात्यूहबलाकयुक्ता दृश्यास् तु पद्मोत्पलमीनपूर्णाः खगाश् च नानाविधभूषिताङ्गा दृश्यास् तु वृक्षेषु सुचित्रपक्षाः
There were lakes filled with lotus, water-lily, and fish, graced by ducks, dātyūha, and cranes; and birds of many kinds, adorned with various colors, were seen in the trees with their splendid wings.
क्रीडासु युक्तान् अथ तर्जयन्तः कुर्वन्ति शब्दं मदनेरिताङ्गाः तस्मिन् गिराव् अद्रिसुताविवाहे ववुश् च वाताः सुखशीतलाङ्गाः
Then, as they played, they challenged each other, making sounds, their bodies stirred by passion; and on that mountain, at the wedding of the mountain’s daughter, gentle, pleasantly cool breezes blew.
पुष्पाणि शुभ्राण्य् अपि पातयन्तः शनैर् नगेभ्यो मलयाद्रिजाताः तथैव सर्वे ऋतवश् च पुण्याश् चकाशिरे ऽन्योन्यविमिश्रिताङ्गाः
The winds born from Mount Malaya gently dropped even pure white flowers from the trees; and all the auspicious seasons shone, their forms mingled together.
समदालिकुलोद्गीतशिलाकुसुमसंचयैः परस्परं हि मालत्यो भावयन्त्यो विरेजिरे
The jasmine vines flourished, mutually supporting each other with the songs of intoxicated bees and heaps of stone flowers.
नीलानि नीलाम्बुरुहैः पयांसि गौराणि गौरैश् च मृणालदण्डैः रक्तैश् च रक्तानि भृशं कृतानि मत्तद्विरेफावलिजुष्टपत्त्रैः
The waters became blue with blue lotuses, white with white stalks of lotus, and red with red lotuses, their leaves frequented by swarms of intoxicated bees.
हैमानि विस्तीर्णजलेषु केषुचिन् निरन्तरं चारुतराणि केषुचित् वैदूर्यनालानि सरःसु केषुचित् प्रजज्ञिरे पद्मवनानि सर्वतः
In some broad waters, golden lotuses appeared everywhere; in others, beautiful beryl stalks; and in some lakes, groves of lotuses sprang up on all sides.
वाप्यस् तत्राभवन् रम्याः कमलोत्पलपुष्पिताः नानाविहंगसंजुष्टा हैमसोपानपङ्क्तयः
There were delightful ponds there, blooming with lotuses and blue water lilies, filled with various birds, and lined with rows of golden steps.
शृङ्गाणि तस्य तु गिरेः कर्णिकारैः सुपुष्पितैः समुच्छ्रितान्य् अविरलैर् हेमानीव बभुर् द्विजाः
The peaks of that mountain, adorned with abundantly blossoming karṇikāra trees, rose up continuously, shining like gold, O twice-born ones.
ईषद्विभिन्नकुसुमैः पाटलैश् चापि पाटलाः संबभूवुर् दिशः सर्वाः पवनाकम्पिमूर्तिभिः
All the directions became colored by pāṭala trees, whose slightly split blossoms and red petals swayed in the wind.
कृष्णार्जुना दशगुणा नीलाशोकमहीरुहाः गिरौ ववृधिरे फुल्लाः स्पर्धयन्तः परस्परम्
On the mountain, flourishing kṛṣṇa, arjuna, tenfold blue aśoka, and other great trees, all in full bloom, seemed to compete with one another.
चारुरावविजुष्टानि किंशुकानां वनानि च पर्वतस्य नितम्बेषु सर्वेषु च विरेजिरे
The beautiful forests of kiṃśuka trees, graced with their lovely calls, shone on every slope of the mountain.
तमालगुल्मैस् तस्यासीच् छोभा हिमवतस् तदा नीलजीमूतसंघातैर् निलीनैर् इव संधिषु
At that time, Himavat's beauty was enhanced by tamāla and gulma trees, whose dark blue clusters of clouds seemed to be hidden in the mountain's crevices.
निकामपुष्पैः सुविशालशाखैः समुच्छ्रितैश् चन्दनचम्पकैश् च प्रमत्तपुंस्कोकिलसंप्रलापैर् हिमाचलो ऽतीव तदा रराज
With lavishly blossoming, wide-branched, tall sandalwood and campaka trees, and the intoxicated calls of male cuckoos, Himālaya shone brilliantly then.
श्रुत्वा शब्दं मृदुमदकलं सर्वतः कोकिलानां चञ्चत्पक्षाः समधुरतरं नीलकण्ठा विनेदुः तेषां शब्दैर् उपचितबलः पुष्पचापेषुहस्तः सज्जीभूतस् त्रिदशवनिता वेद्धुम् अङ्गेष्व् अनङ्गः
Hearing the soft, melodious sounds of cuckoos from all sides, blue-throated birds fluttered their wings and sang even more sweetly; stirred by their calls, Kāmadeva, bow in hand, became ready to pierce the bodies of the divine maidens.
पटुः सूर्यातपश् चापि प्रायशो ऽल्पजलाशयः देवीविवाहसमये ग्रीष्म आगाद् धिमाचलम्
The sun's heat grew intense, and water was scarce; thus, at the time of the goddess's wedding, the summer season arrived at Himālaya.
स चापि तरुभिस् तत्र बहुभिः कुसुमोत्करैः शोभयाम् आस शृङ्गाणि प्रालेयाद्रेः समन्ततः
There, with many trees bearing clusters of blossoms, the mountain's peaks all around were adorned beautifully.
तथापि च गिरौ तत्र वायवः सुमनोहराः ववुः पाटलविस्तीर्णकदम्बार्जुनगन्धिनः
Even so, on that mountain, most delightful breezes blew, carrying the fragrance of pāṭala, kadamba, and arjuna trees spread far and wide.
वाप्यः प्रफुल्लपद्मौघकेसरारुणमूर्तयः अभवंस् तटसंघुष्टफलहंसकदम्बकाः
The ponds, with masses of blooming lotuses and red with their filaments, were filled with the sounds of fruit-eating geese and flocks of waterfowl along their banks.
तथा कुरबकाश् चापि कुसुमापाण्डुमूर्तयः सर्वेषु नगशृङ्गेषु भ्रमरावलिसेविताः
Likewise, kurabaka trees, pale with their blossoms, were attended by swarms of bees on every mountain peak.
बकुलाश् च नितम्बेषु विशालेषु महीभृतः उत्ससर्ज मनोज्ञानि कुसुमानि समन्ततः
On the broad slopes of the mountain, bakula trees released their charming flowers in every direction.
इति कुसुमविचित्रसर्ववृक्षा विविधविहंगमनादरम्यदेशाः हिमगिरितनयाविवाहभूत्यै षड् उपययुर् ऋतवो मुनिप्रवीराः
Thus, the six seasons, filled with trees adorned with diverse blossoms and delightful with the songs of many birds, all arrived for the wedding of the daughter of the snowy mountain, O best of sages.
तत एवं प्रवृत्ते तु सर्वभूतसमागमे नानावाद्यसमाकीर्णे अहं तत्र द्विजातयः
Then, as all beings gathered and various instruments resounded, I too, O twice-born, was present there.
शैलपुत्रीम् अलंकृत्य योग्याभरणसंपदा पुरं प्रवेशितवांस् तां स्वयम् आदाय भो द्विजाः
Having adorned the mountain's daughter with appropriate ornaments, I personally led her into the city, O twice-born ones.
ततस् तु पुनर् एवेशम् अहं चैवोक्तवान् विभुम् हविर् जुहोमि वह्नौ ते उपाध्यायपदे स्थितः
Then again, I addressed the Lord, standing in the role of officiating priest: 'I offer the oblation into the fire for you.'
ददासि मह्यं यद्य् आज्ञां कर्तव्यो ऽयं क्रियाविधिः माम् आह शंकरश् चैवं देवदेवो जगत्पतिः
If you grant me permission, this ritual procedure must be performed; thus spoke Śaṃkara, the god of gods, lord of the world, to me.
यद् उद्दिष्टं सुरेशान तत् कुरुष्व यथेप्सितम् कर्तास्मि वचनं सर्वं ब्रह्मंस् तव जगद्विभो
O lord of the gods, whatever you have prescribed, do as you desire; I shall carry out all your commands, O Brahman, sovereign of the universe.
ततश् चाहं प्रहृष्टात्मा कुशान् आदाय सत्वरम् हस्तं देवस्य देव्याश् च योगबन्धेन युक्तवान्
Then, with a delighted heart, I quickly took up the kuśa grass, and, through yogic union, joined the hands of the god and the goddess.
ज्वलनश् च स्वयं तत्र कृताञ्जलिपुटः स्थितः श्रुतिगीतैर् महामन्त्रैर् मूर्तिमद्भिर् उपस्थितैः
There, Agni himself stood with palms joined in reverence, accompanied by hymns from the Vedas and great mantras, manifest in form.
यथोक्तविधिना हुत्वा सर्पिस् तद् अमृतं हविः ततस् तं ज्वलनं सर्वं कारयित्वा प्रदक्षिणम्
Having offered the clarified butter as oblation according to the prescribed rite, that nectar, I then made Agni the witness and led him around in circumambulation.
मुक्त्वा हस्तसमायोगं सहितः सर्वदैवतैः पुत्रैश् च मानसैः सिद्धैः प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना
Releasing the joined hands, accompanied by all the gods, the mind-born sons, and the accomplished sages, with a joyful inner spirit.
