शक्राद्या मेनिरे देवाः सर्व एव सुरेश्वराः तस्य देवी तदा हृष्टा समक्षं त्रिदिवौकसाम्
The gods, led by Śakra, and all the lords of the celestials, regarded him; at that moment, the goddess was delighted in the presence of the heavenly beings.
पादयोः स्थापयाम् आस स्रङ्मालाम् अमितद्युतिः साधु साध्व् इति ते होचुः सर्वे देवाः पुनर् विभुम्
She placed a garland upon his feet, radiant with immeasurable brilliance; all the gods exclaimed, 'Excellent, excellent!' again to the Lord.
सह देव्या नमश् चक्रुः शिरोभिर् भूतलाश्रितैः अथास्मिन्न् अन्तरे विप्रास् तम् अहं दैवतैः सह
Along with the goddess, they bowed with their heads touching the earth; and in that moment, O Brahmins, I, together with the gods, addressed him.
हिमवन्तं महाशैलम् उक्तवांश् च महाद्युतिम् श्लाघ्यः पूज्यश् च वन्द्यश् च सर्वेषां त्वं महान् असि
To Himavat, the great and radiant mountain, I spoke: 'You are praiseworthy, worthy of worship and reverence; among all, you are truly great.'
शर्वेण सह संबन्धो यस्य ते ऽभ्युदयो महान् क्रियतां चारुर् उद्वाहः किमर्थं स्थीयते परम् ततः प्रणम्य हिमवांस् तदा मां प्रत्यभाषत
'Since you have such a great alliance with Śarva, let this splendid wedding be arranged—why then is there hesitation, O noble one?' Then, after bowing, Himavat replied to me.
त्वम् एव कारणं देव यस्य सर्वोदये मम प्रसादः सहसोत्पन्नो हेतुश् चापि त्वम् एव हि उद्वाहस् तु यदा यादृक् तद् विधत्स्व पितामह
'You alone, O god, are the cause of all my prosperity; by your grace, everything has arisen, and you alone are the reason. As for the wedding, let it be as you see fit, O Grandfather.'
तत एवं वचः श्रुत्वा गिरिराजस्य भो द्विजाः उद्वाहः क्रियतां देव इत्य् अहं चोक्तवान् विभुम्
Then, having heard these words of the king of mountains, O Brahmins, I said to the Lord, 'Let the wedding be performed, O god.'
माम् आह शंकरो देवो यथेष्टम् इति लोकपः तत्क्षणाच् च ततो विप्रा अस्माभिर् निर्मितं पुरम्
The god Śaṅkara then said to me, 'As you wish, O Lord of the worlds.' And at that very moment, O Brahmins, we constructed a city.
उद्वाहार्थं महेशस्य नानारत्नोपशोभितम् रत्नानि मणयश् चित्रा हेममौक्तिकम् एव च
For the wedding of Maheśa, it was adorned with various gems; there were jewels, diverse precious stones, gold, and pearls.
मूर्तिमन्त उपागम्य अलंचक्रुः पुरोत्तमम् चित्रा मारकती भूमिः सुवर्णस्तम्भशोभिता
Manifest beings approached and decorated the excellent city; its ground was of variegated emerald, adorned with golden pillars.
भास्वत्स्फटिकभित्तिश् च मुक्ताहारप्रलम्बिता तस्मिन् द्वारि पुरे रम्य उद्वाहार्थं विनिर्मिता
Its shining crystal walls were hung with strings of pearls; at the beautiful gate of that city, a wedding pavilion was constructed.
शुशुभे देवदेवस्य महेशस्य महात्मनः सोमादित्यौ समं तत्र तापयन्तौ महामणी
There, the city shone for the great-souled Lord of gods, Maheśa, as the moon and sun together illuminated it with their brilliant rays.
सौरभेयं मनोरम्यं गन्धम् आदाय मारुतः प्रववौ सुखसंस्पर्शो भवभक्तिं प्रदर्शयन्
A fragrant and delightful breeze, carrying a sweet scent, blew gently, displaying devotion to Bhava.
समुद्रास् तत्र चत्वारः शक्राद्याश् च सुरोत्तमाः देवनद्यो महानद्यः सिद्धा मुनय एव च
There were the four oceans, the best of gods like Indra, divine rivers, great rivers, Siddhas, and sages as well.
गन्धर्वाप्सरसः सर्वे नागा यक्षाः सराक्षसाः औदकाः खेचराश् चान्ये किंनरा देवचारणाः
All the Gandharvas and Apsarases, Nāgas, Yakṣas, and Rākṣasas, beings of the waters, those who move in the sky, Kinnaras, and divine Cāraṇas were present.
तुम्बुरुर् नारदो हाहा हूहूश् चैव तु सामगाः रम्याण्य् आदाय वाद्यानि तत्राजग्मुस् तदा पुरम्
Tumburu, Nārada, Hāhā, Hūhū, and the singers of Sāma came there to the city, bringing delightful instruments.
ऋषयस् तु कथास् तत्र वेदगीतास् तपोधनाः पुण्यान् वैवाहिकान् मन्त्राञ् जेपुः संहृष्टमानसाः
The sages, rich in austerity, recited stories and Vedic hymns there, joyfully chanting sacred wedding mantras.
जगतो मातरः सर्वा देवकन्याश् च कृत्स्नशः गायन्ति हर्षिताः सर्वा उद्वाहे परमेष्ठिनः
All the mothers of the world and all the divine maidens, filled with joy, sang at the wedding of the Supreme Lord.
ऋतवः षट् समं तत्र नानागन्धसुखावहाः उद्वाहः शंकरस्येति मूर्तिमन्त उपस्थिताः
The six seasons, each bringing various fragrant delights, were present there in embodied form, saying, 'This is Śaṅkara's wedding.'
नीलजीमूतसंकाशैर् मन्त्रध्वनिप्रहर्षिभिः केकायमानैः शिखिभिर् नृत्यमानैश् च सर्वशः
Peacocks, resembling dark rainclouds, danced everywhere, calling out joyfully, thrilled by the sound of mantras.
विलोलपिङ्गलस्पष्टविद्युल्लेखाविहासिता कुमुदापीडशुक्लाभिर् बलाकाभिश् च शोभिता
Adorned by cranes, white as the crest of the water-lily, laughing with the flashes of clear lightning, restless and tawny.
प्रत्यग्रसंजातशिलीन्ध्रकन्दली लताद्रुमाद्युद्गतपल्लवा शुभा शुभाम्बुधाराप्रणयप्रबोधितैर् महालसैर् भेकगणैश् च नादिता
Beautiful with fresh shoots sprouting from creepers, trees, and young bamboo clumps, and resounding with the loud calls of great frogs awakened by the loving touch of auspicious rainclouds.
प्रियेषु मानोद्धतमानसानां मनस्विनीनाम् अपि कामिनीनाम् मयूरकेकाभिरुतैः क्षणेन मनोहरैर् मानविभङ्गहेतुभिः
The proud hearts of passionate women, angered with their beloveds, are instantly captivated and their pride broken by the enchanting, momentary cries of peacocks.
तथा विवर्णोज्ज्वलचारुमूर्तिना शशाङ्कलेखाकुटिलेन सर्वतः पयोदसंघातसमीपवर्तिना महेन्द्रचापेन भृशं विराजिता
Brilliantly adorned everywhere by the radiant, beautiful form of the rainbow, twisted like the crescent moon, shining near the masses of rainclouds.
विचित्रपुष्पाम्बुभवैः सुगन्धिभिर् घनाम्बुसंपर्कतया सुशीतलैः विकम्पयन्ती पवनैर् मनोहरैः सुराङ्गनानाम् अलकावलीः शुभाः
With delightful, fragrant breezes cooled by contact with the dense, rain-filled clouds, shaking the lovely locks of celestial women with their charming, flower-scented moisture.
गर्जत्पयोदस्थगितेन्दुबिम्बा नवाम्बुसिक्तोदकचारुदूर्वा निरीक्षिता सादरम् उत्सुकाभिर् निश्वासधूम्रं पथिकाङ्गनाभिः
With the moon’s disk hidden by roaring clouds, the fresh, rain-soaked, beautiful grass is gazed upon with longing by the anxious eyes of travelers’ wives, their sighs smoky with yearning.
हंसनूपुरशब्दाढ्या समुन्नतपयोधरा चलद्विद्युल्लताहारा स्पष्टपद्मविलोचना
Rich with the sound of swan-anklets, with uplifted breasts, adorned with garlands of flashing lightning, and with clear, lotus-like eyes.
असितजलदधीरध्वानवित्रस्तहंसा विमलसलिलधारोत्पातनम्रोत्पलाग्रा सुरभिकुसुमरेणुकॣप्तसर्वाङ्गशोभा गिरिदुहितृविवाहे प्रावृड् आविर्बभूव
The rainy season appeared at the mountain maiden’s wedding, its beauty enhanced by the fragrance of flowers, the bodies of swans frightened by the deep rumble of dark clouds, pure streams lifting up lotuses, and every limb adorned with pollen.
मेघकञ्चुकनिर्मुक्ता पद्मकोशोद्भवस्तनी हंसनूपुरनिह्रादा सर्वसस्यदिगन्तरा
Freed from the cloak of clouds, her breasts blossoming like lotus buds, resounding with the jingling of swan-anklets, she fills every direction with abundant crops.
विस्तीर्णपुलिनश्रोणी कूजत्सारसमेखला प्रफुल्लेन्दीवरश्यामविलोचनमनोहरा
With broad, sandy banks as hips, girdled by the cooing of cranes, and captivating with eyes as dark as blooming blue lotuses.
