एवम् अस्त्व् इति सो ऽप्य् उक्त्वा भगवान् आदिकृत् प्रभुः लोकानां कार्यसिद्ध्यर्थं घर्मवर्षहिमप्रदः
'So be it,' said the Lord, the Primal Creator, and for the accomplishment of the worlds' purposes, He became the giver of heat, rain, and cold.
ततः सांख्याश् च योगाश् च ये चान्ये मोक्षकाङ्क्षिणः ध्यायन्ति ध्यायिनो देवं हृदयस्थं दिवाकरम्
Then those who follow Sāṅkhya and Yoga, and others who seek liberation, meditate upon the god, the Sun, abiding in the heart.
सर्वलक्षणहीनो ऽपि युक्तो वा सर्वपातकैः सर्वं च तरते पापं देवम् अर्कं समाश्रितः
Even one devoid of all marks, or afflicted by all sins, crosses over all sin by taking refuge in the god Arka (the Sun).
अग्निहोत्रं च वेदाश् च यज्ञाश् च बहुदक्षिणाः भानोर् भक्तिनमस्कारकलां नार्हन्ति षोडशीम्
Neither Agnihotra, nor the Vedas, nor sacrifices with abundant gifts can equal even a sixteenth part of devotion and salutation to Bhānu (the Sun).
तीर्थानां परमं तीर्थं मङ्गलानां च मङ्गलम् पवित्रं च पवित्राणां प्रपद्यन्ते दिवाकरम्
Of all sacred fords, He is the supreme ford; of all auspicious things, the most auspicious; of all that is pure, the purest—men take refuge in the Sun.
शक्राद्यैः संस्तुतं देवं ये नमस्यन्ति भास्करम् सर्वकिल्बिषनिर्मुक्ताः सूर्यलोकं व्रजन्ति ते
Those who worship Bhāskara (the Sun), praised by Indra and others, are freed from all sins and attain the world of the Sun.
चिरात् प्रभृति नो ब्रह्मञ् श्रोतुम् इच्छा प्रवर्तते नाम्नाम् अष्टशतं ब्रूहि यत् त्वयोक्तं पुरा रवेः
O Brahman, for a long time now, I have wished to hear the eight hundred names which you formerly spoke of the Sun.
अष्टोत्तरशतं नाम्नां शृणुध्वं गदतो मम भास्करस्य परं गुह्यं स्वर्गमोक्षप्रदं द्विजाः
Hear from me, as I recite, the one hundred and eight names of Bhāskara, most secret, bestowing heaven and liberation, O twice-born ones.
ॐ सूर्यो ऽर्यमा भगस् त्वष्टा पूषार्कः सविता रविः गभस्तिमान् अजः कालो मृत्युर् धाता प्रभाकरः
Om. He is the Sun, Aryaman, Bhaga, Tvashta, Pusha, Arka, Savita, Ravi, Gabhastiman, Aja, Kala, Mrityu, Dhata, and Prabhakara.
पृथिव्य् आपश् च तेजश् च खं वायुश् च परायणम् सोमो बृहस्पतिः शुक्रो बुधो ऽङ्गारक एव च
He is the earth, water, fire, space, wind, the supreme goal, Soma, Brihaspati, Shukra, Budha, and also Angaraka.
इन्द्रो विवस्वान् दीप्तांशुः शुचिः शौरिः शनैश्चरः ब्रह्मा विष्णुश् च रुद्रश् च स्कन्दो वैश्रवणो यमः
He is Indra, Vivasvan, the radiant one, the pure one, Sauri, Shanaishchara, Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Skanda, Vaishravana, and Yama.
वैद्युतो जाठरश् चाग्निर् ऐन्धनस् तेजसां पतिः धर्मध्वजो वेदकर्ता वेदाङ्गो वेदवाहनः
He is the lightning, the digestive fire, the fire fed by fuel, the lord of energies, the banner of righteousness, the maker of the Vedas, the limbs of the Vedas, and the vehicle of the Vedas.
कृतं त्रेता द्वापरश् च कलिः सर्वामराश्रयः कलाकाष्ठामुहूर्ताश् च क्षपा यामास् तथा क्षणाः
He is Krita, Treta, Dvapara, and Kali; the refuge of all the gods; the divisions of time such as kala, kashtha, muhurta, the nights, the watches, and the moments.
संवत्सरकरो ऽश्वत्थः कालचक्रो विभावसुः पुरुषः शाश्वतो योगी व्यक्ताव्यक्तः सनातनः
He is the maker of the year, the Ashvattha tree, the wheel of time, fire, the eternal person, the yogi, the manifest and unmanifest, the ancient one.
कालाध्यक्षः प्रजाध्यक्षो विश्वकर्मा तमोनुदः वरुणः सागरो ऽंशश् च जीमूतो जिवनो ऽरिहा
He is the overseer of time, the overseer of beings, the maker of the universe, the dispeller of darkness, Varuna, the ocean, the portion, the rain cloud, the giver of life, and the destroyer of enemies.
भूताश्रयो भूतपतिः सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः स्रष्टा संवर्तको वह्निः सर्वस्यादिर् अलोलुपः
He is the support of beings, the lord of beings, honored by all worlds, the creator, the destroyer, fire, the origin of all, and free from greed.
अनन्तः कपिलो भानुः कामदः सर्वतोमुखः जयो विशालो वरदः सर्वभूतनिषेवितः
He is Ananta, Kapila, Bhanu, the giver of desires, facing all directions, victorious, vast, the bestower of boons, and served by all beings.
मनः सुपर्णो भूतादिः शीघ्रगः प्राणधारणः धन्वन्तरिर् धूमकेतुर् आदिदेवो ऽदितेः सुतः
He is mind, Suparna, the origin of beings, swift-moving, the sustainer of breath, Dhanvantari, Dhūmaketu, the primeval god, and the son of Aditi.
द्वादशात्मा रविर् दक्षः पिता माता पितामहः स्वर्गद्वारं प्रजाद्वारं मोक्षद्वारं त्रिविष्टपम्
He is of twelve forms, Ravi, Daksha, father, mother, grandfather, the gate to heaven, the gate to progeny, the gate to liberation, and the highest heaven.
देहकर्ता प्रशान्तात्मा विश्वात्मा विश्वतोमुखः चराचरात्मा सूक्ष्मात्मा मैत्रेयः करुणान्वितः
He is the maker of bodies, of tranquil soul, the soul of the universe, facing all directions, the soul of the moving and unmoving, the subtle soul, Maitreya, and full of compassion.
एतद् वै कीर्तनीयस्य सूर्यस्यामिततेजसः नाम्नाम् अष्टशतं रम्यं मया प्रोक्तं द्विजोत्तमाः
Thus, I have spoken these eight hundred beautiful names of the Sun, of boundless brilliance, which are to be recited, O best of twice-born.
सुरगणपितृयक्षसेवितं ह्य् असुरनिशाकरसिद्धवन्दितम् वरकनकहुताशनप्रभं प्रणिपतितो ऽस्मि हिताय भास्करम्
I bow to Bhaskara, for the welfare of all, who is served by hosts of gods, ancestors, and yakshas, worshipped by asuras, night-wanderers, and siddhas, whose radiance is like gold and fire.
सूर्योदये यः सुसमाहितः पठेत् स पुत्रदारान् धनरत्नसंचयान् लभेत जातिस्मरतां नरः स तु स्मृतिं च मेधां च स विन्दते पराम्
Whoever, with focused mind, recites this at sunrise, obtains sons, wife, wealth, and treasures; such a person attains remembrance of past births, and gains supreme memory and intelligence.
इमं स्तवं देववरस्य यो नरः प्रकीर्तयेच् छुद्धमनाः समाहितः विमुच्यते शोकदवाग्निसागराल् लभेत कामान् मनसा यथेप्सितान्
Whoever, with pure mind and concentration, recites this hymn to the best of gods, is freed from the ocean of the fire of sorrow, and obtains the desires of his mind as he wishes.
यो ऽसौ सर्वगतो देवस् त्रिपुरारिस् त्रिलोचनः उमाप्रियकरो रुद्रश् चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखरः
He who is the all-pervading god, the enemy of Tripura, the three-eyed one, beloved of Uma, Rudra, and crowned with the crescent moon.
विद्राव्य विबुधान् सर्वान् सिद्धविद्याधरान् ऋषीन् गन्धर्वयक्षनागांश् च तथान्यांश् च समागतान्
Having driven away all the gods, siddhas, vidyadharas, rishis, gandharvas, yakshas, nagas, and others who had assembled.
जघान पूर्वं दक्षस्य यजतो धरणीतले यज्ञं समृद्धं रत्नाढ्यं सर्वसंभारसंभृतम्
He first struck down Daksha’s sacrifice, which was being performed upon the earth—a prosperous rite, rich in jewels, furnished with every requisite.
यस्य प्रतापसंत्रस्ताः शक्राद्यास् त्रिदिवौकसः शान्तिं न लेभिरे विप्राः कैलासं शरणं गताः
By whose radiance, the dwellers of heaven—Indra and the others—were terrified, and the Brahmins found no peace, seeking refuge upon Kailasa.
स आस्ते तत्र वरदः शूलपाणिर् वृषध्वजः पिनाकपाणिर् भगवान् दक्षयज्ञविनाशनः
There abides the boon-giver, bearing the trident, the bull-bannered, the wielder of Pinaka, the blessed one, destroyer of Daksha’s sacrifice.
महादेवो ऽकले देशे कृत्तिवासा वृषध्वजः एकाम्रके मुनिश्रेष्ठाः सर्वकामप्रदो हरः
Mahadeva, clad in skins, bull-bannered, in that timeless place, beneath the single mango tree, O best of sages, Hara grants all desires.
