स्नेहेन तुल्यम् अस्मासु माता देव न वर्तते विसृज्य ज्यायसं भक्त्या कनीयांसं बुभूषति
O god, our mother does not show equal affection to us; forsaking the elder, she wishes to favor the younger with devotion.
तस्यां मयोद्यतः पादो न तु देहे निपातितः बाल्याद् वा यदि वा मोहात् तद् भवान् क्षन्तुम् अर्हसि
My foot was only raised against her, not placed on her body; whether from childishness or confusion, you should forgive this, lord.
शप्तो ऽहं तात कोपेन जनन्या तनयो यतः ततो मन्ये न जननीम् इमां वै तपतां वर
Father, I have been cursed by my mother in anger, for I am her son; therefore, O best of ascetics, I do not consider her my mother.
तव प्रसादाच् चरणो भगवन् न पतेद् यथा मातृशापाद् अयं मे ऽद्य तथा चिन्तय गोपते
By your grace, O lord, may my foot not fall as a result of my mother's curse today; consider this, O protector of the earth.
असंशयं महत् पुत्र भविष्यत्य् अत्र कारणम् येन त्वाम् आविशत् क्रोधो धर्मज्ञं धर्मशीलिनम्
Without doubt, my son, there will be a great reason for this, by which anger entered you, who know and practice righteousness.
सर्वेषाम् एव शापानां प्रतिघातो हि विद्यते न तु मात्राभिशप्तानां क्वचिच् छापनिवर्तनम्
There is indeed a remedy for all curses, but for those cursed by their mother, there is nowhere any reversal of the curse.
न शक्यम् एतन् मिथ्या तु कर्तुं मातुर् वचस् तव किंचित् ते ऽहं विधास्यामि पुत्रस्नेहाद् अनुग्रहम्
It is not possible to make your mother's words false; yet, out of affection for you as my son, I will grant you some favor.
कृमयो मांसम् आदाय प्रयास्यन्ति महीतलम् कृतं तस्या वचः सत्यं त्वं च त्रातो भविष्यसि
Worms will take the flesh and depart to the earth; her words have been fulfilled in truth, and you shall be protected.
आदित्यस् त्व् अब्रवीच् छायां किमर्थं तनयेषु वै तुल्येष्व् अप्य् अधिकः स्नेह एकं प्रति कृतस् त्वया
The Sun spoke to Chāyā: For what reason, among your children who are equal, have you shown greater affection to one?
नूनं नैषां त्वं जननी संज्ञा कापि त्वम् आगता निर्गुणेष्व् अप्य् अपत्येषु माता शापं न दास्यति
Surely you are not their true mother; some other identity has come to you. Even among children without qualities, a mother does not give a curse.
सा तत्परिहरन्ती च शापाद् भीता तदा रवेः कथयाम् आस वृत्तान्तं स श्रुत्वा श्वशुरं ययौ
She, fearful of the curse, sought to avoid it and then told the story to the Sun; hearing it, he went to his father-in-law.
स चापि तं यथान्यायम् अर्चयित्वा तदा रविम् निर्दग्धुकामं रोषेण सान्त्वयानस् तम् अब्रवीत्
He, after properly honoring the Sun, who was then intent on burning in anger, spoke to him with soothing words.
तवातितेजसा व्याप्तम् इदं रूपं सुदुःसहम् असहन्ती तु तत् संज्ञा वने चरति वै तपः
This form, pervaded by your excessive radiance, is extremely difficult to bear; unable to endure it, Saṃjñā wanders in the forest practicing austerity.
द्रक्ष्यते तां भवान् अद्य स्वां भार्यां शुभचारिणीम् रूपार्थं भवतो ऽरण्ये चरन्तीं सुमहत् तपः
Today you will see her, your virtuous wife, performing great austerity in the forest for the sake of your form.
श्रुतं मे ब्रह्मणो वाक्यं तव तेजोवरोधने रूपं निर्वर्तयाम्य् अद्य तव कान्तं दिवस्पते
I have heard Brahmā's words regarding the restraint of your radiance; today, O lord of the day, I will fashion a pleasing form for you.
ततस् तथेति तं प्राह त्वष्टारं भगवान् रविः ततो विवस्वतो रूपं प्राग् आसीत् परिमण्डलम्
Then, saying 'so be it,' the blessed Sun spoke to Tvaṣṭṛ; thereafter, the form of Vivasvat became more refined.
विश्वकर्मा त्व् अनुज्ञातः शाकद्वीपे विवस्वता भ्रमिम् आरोप्य तत्तेजःशातनायोपचक्रमे
Viśvakarman, having received permission from Vivasvat in Śākadvīpa, began the process to diminish that radiance by means of a whirling motion.
भ्रमताशेषजगतां नाभिभूतेन भास्वता समुद्राद्रिवनोपेता त्व् आरुरोह मही नभः
With the brilliant radiance, which was not overcome by the whirling of all worlds, the earth, ocean, mountain, and sky were ascended.
गगनं चाखिलं विप्राः सचन्द्रग्रहतारकम् अधोगतं महाभागा बभूवाक्षिप्तम् आकुलम्
O sages, the entire sky, along with the moon, planets, and stars, was cast downward, becoming agitated and disturbed.
विक्षिप्तसलिलाः सर्वे बभूवुश् च तथार्णवाः व्यभिद्यन्त महाशैलाः शीर्णसानुनिबन्धनाः
All the oceans became disturbed, and the great mountains, with their ridges and bases shattered, were split apart.
ध्रुवाधाराण्य् अशेषाणि धिष्ण्यानि मुनिसत्तमाः त्रुट्यद्रश्मिनिबन्धीनि बन्धनानि अधो ययुः
O best of sages, all the fixed supports and abodes, whose bonds were held by rays, broke and fell down.
वेगभ्रमणसंपातवायुक्षिप्ताः सहस्रशः व्यशीर्यन्त महामेघा घोरारावविराविणः
Thousands of great clouds, tossed by the force of the whirling wind, were scattered, resounding with terrifying noise.
भास्वद्भ्रमणविभ्रान्तभूम्याकाशरसातलम् जगद् आकुलम् अत्यर्थं तदासीन् मुनिसत्तमाः
O best of sages, the earth, sky, and underworld, bewildered by the whirling brilliance, became exceedingly agitated.
त्रैलोक्यम् आकुलं वीक्ष्य भ्रममाणं सुरर्षयः देवाश् च ब्रह्मणा सार्धं भास्वन्तम् अभितुष्टुवुः
Seeing the three worlds in turmoil and whirling, the divine sages and gods, together with Brahmā, praised the radiant one.
आदिदेवो ऽसि देवानां जातस् त्वं भूतये भुवः सर्गस्थित्यन्तकालेषु त्रिधा भेदेन तिष्ठसि
You are the primordial god of the gods, born for the welfare of the world; at the times of creation, preservation, and dissolution, you exist in threefold distinction.
स्वस्ति ते ऽस्तु जगन्नाथ घर्मवर्षदिवाकर इन्द्रादयस् तदा देवा लिख्यमानम् अथास्तुवन्
May there be well-being for you, Lord of the universe, O Sun who brings heat and rain; then Indra and the other gods praised you as you were being depicted.
जय देव जगत्स्वामिञ् जयाशेषजगत्पते ऋषयश् च ततः सप्त वसिष्ठात्रिपुरोगमाः
Victory to you, O Lord, Master of the universe! Victory to you, Lord of all the worlds! Then the seven sages, led by Vasiṣṭha and Atri, also praised you.
तुष्टुवुर् विविधैः स्तोत्रैः स्वस्ति स्वस्तीतिवादिनः वेदोक्तिभिर् अथाग्र्याभिर् वालखिल्याश् च तुष्टुवुः
They praised you with various hymns, uttering words of blessing and auspiciousness, with the foremost Vedic declarations; and the Vālakhilya sages also offered praise.
अग्निर् आद्याश् च भास्वन्तं लिख्यमानं मुदा युताः त्वं नाथ मोक्षिणां मोक्षो ध्येयस् त्वं ध्यानिनां परः
Agni and the other gods, filled with joy, praised you, the radiant one being depicted; O Lord, you are the liberation of those who seek freedom, and the supreme object of meditation for those who contemplate.
त्वं गतिः सर्वभूतानां कर्मकाण्डविवर्तिनाम् संपूज्यस् त्वं तु देवेश शं नो ऽस्तु जगतां पते
You are the path for all beings who revolve in the cycle of action; you are to be worshipped, O Lord of the gods. May there be peace for us, O Lord of the worlds.
