देव प्रसीद पुत्राणां हृतं त्रिभुवनं मम यज्ञभागाश् च दैतेयैर् दानवैश् च बलाधिकैः
O god, be gracious! My sons have lost the three worlds, and their shares of the sacrifice have been taken by the Daityas and Danavas, who are stronger.
तन्निमित्तं प्रसादं त्वं कुरुष्व मम गोपते अंशेन तेषां भ्रातृत्वं गत्वा तान् नाशये रिपून्
For this reason, O Lord of Cows, grant me your favor: become their brother by a portion of yourself and destroy those enemies.
यथा मे तनया भूयो यज्ञभागभुजः प्रभो भवेयुर् अधिपाश् चैव त्रैलोक्यस्य दिवाकर
So that my sons may again partake of the sacrificial shares, O Lord, and become rulers of the three worlds, O Sun.
तथानुकल्पं पुत्राणां सुप्रसन्नो रवे मम कुरु प्रसन्नार्तिहर कार्यं कर्ता त्वम् उच्यते
Thus, O Sun, fulfill the desire of my sons according to this request; you are called the remover of distress—please accomplish this task.
ततस् ताम् आह भगवान् भास्करो वारितस्करः प्रणताम् अदितिं विप्राः प्रसादसुमुखो विभुः
Then the blessed Sun, the dispeller of darkness, addressed the bowed Aditi with a face full of grace, O twice-born.
सहस्रांशेन ते गर्भः संभूयाहम् अशेषतः त्वत्पुत्रशत्रून् दक्षो ऽहं नाशयाम्य् आशु निर्वृतः
By a thousandth part of myself, I will fully enter your womb; I will swiftly destroy your sons' enemies, contented.
इत्य् उक्त्वा भगवान् भास्वान् अन्तर्धानम् उपागतः निवृत्ता सापि तपसः संप्राप्ताखिलवाञ्छिता
Having spoken thus, the radiant Lord disappeared; she ceased her austerities, having obtained all her desires.
ततो रश्मिसहस्रात् तु सुषुम्नाख्यो रवेः करः ततः संवत्सरस्यान्ते तत्कामपूरणाय सः
Then, from among the Sun's thousand rays, the one called Suṣumnā entered; at the year's end, it fulfilled her wish.
निवासं सविता चक्रे देवमातुस् तदोदरे कृच्छ्रचान्द्रायणादींश् च सा चक्रे सुसमाहिता
The Sun took up residence in the womb of the mother of the gods, and she, with great concentration, performed difficult vows such as Kṛcchra and Cāndrāyaṇa.
शुचिना धारयाम्य् एनं दिव्यं गर्भम् इति द्विजाः ततस् तां कश्यपः प्राह किंचित्कोपप्लुताक्षरम्
With purity she bore that divine embryo, saying, 'I sustain this divine child.' Then Kaśyapa addressed her, his words tinged with some anger.
किं मारयसि गर्भाण्डम् इति नित्योपवासिनी सा च तं प्राह गर्भाण्डम् एतत् पश्येति कोपना न मारितं विपक्षाणां मृत्युर् एव भविष्यति
Then the ever-fasting Aditi, angered, said to him, 'Why do you call this egg slain? Behold, this egg is here. It is not slain; the death of the adversaries alone will come.'
इत्य् उक्त्वा तं तदा गर्भम् उत्ससर्ज सुरारणिः जाज्वल्यमानं तेजोभिः पत्युर् वचनकोपिता
Having spoken thus, the goddess, incited by her husband's words, released that embryo, blazing with radiance.
तं दृष्ट्वा कश्यपो गर्भम् उद्यद्भास्करवर्चसम् तुष्टाव प्रणतो भूत्वा वाग्भिर् आद्याभिर् आदरात्
Seeing that embryo, shining with the splendor of the rising sun, Kashyapa, bowing with reverence, praised it with primordial words.
संस्तूयमानः स तदा गर्भाण्डात् प्रकटो ऽभवत् पद्मपत्त्रसवर्णाभस् तेजसा व्याप्तदिङ्मुखः
While being thus praised, he then emerged from the egg, manifest, radiant like a lotus petal, his brilliance filling all directions.
अथान्तरिक्षाद् आभाष्य कश्यपं मुनिसत्तमम् सतोयमेघगम्भीरा वाग् उवाचाशरीरिणी
Then, from the sky, a bodiless voice, deep as a rain-cloud, addressed the eminent sage Kashyapa.
मारितंतेपतः प्रोक्तम् एतद् अण्डं त्वयादितेः तस्मान् मुने सुतस् ते ऽयं मार्तण्डाख्यो भविष्यति
'This egg, O sage, has been declared by you as slain; therefore, this son of yours, born of Aditi, will be known as Martanda.'
हनिष्यत्य् असुरांश् चायं यज्ञभागहरान् अरीन् देवा निशम्येति वचो गगनात् समुपागतम्
'He will slay the asuras, those enemies who seize the shares of sacrifice.' Thus spoke the voice from the sky, heard by the gods.
प्रहर्षम् अतुलं याता दानवाश् च हतौजसः ततो युद्धाय दैतेयान् आजुहाव शतक्रतुः
The danavas, their strength destroyed, became filled with incomparable dismay; then Indra summoned the daityas to battle.
सह देवैर् मुदा युक्तो दानवाश् च तम् अभ्ययुः तेषां युद्धम् अभूद् घोरं देवानाम् असुरैः सह
With the gods, filled with joy, the danavas approached; between the gods and asuras, a terrible battle ensued.
शस्त्रास्त्रवृष्टिसंदीप्तसमस्तभुवनान्तरम् तस्मिन् युद्धे भगवता मार्तण्डेन निरीक्षिताः
In that battle, the whole world was set ablaze by showers of weapons and missiles, as they were watched by the blessed Martanda.
तेजसा दह्यमानास् ते भस्मीभूता महासुराः ततः प्रहर्षम् अतुलं प्राप्ताः सर्वे दिवौकसः
Burned by his radiance, the great asuras were reduced to ashes; then all the dwellers of heaven attained unparalleled joy.
तुष्टुवुस् तेजसां योनिं मार्तण्डम् अदितिं तथा स्वाधिकारांस् ततः प्राप्ता यज्ञभागांश् च पूर्ववत्
They praised Martanda, the source of radiance, and also Aditi; thus they regained their rightful domains and their shares of sacrifice as before.
भगवान् अपि मार्तण्डः स्वाधिकारम् अथाकरोत् कदम्बपुष्पवद् भास्वान् अधश् चोर्ध्वं च रश्मिभिः वृतो ऽग्निपिण्डसदृशो दध्रे नातिस्फुटं वपुः
The blessed Martanda too assumed his own dominion; surrounded above and below by rays like clusters of kadamba flowers, he shone like a mass of fire, his form not yet fully distinct.
कथं कान्ततरं पश्चाद् रूपं संलब्धवान् रविः कदम्बगोलकाकारं तन् मे ब्रूहि जगत्पते
'How did the Sun later obtain a form even more beautiful, shaped like a kadamba sphere? Tell me that, Lord of the world.'
त्वष्टा तस्मै ददौ कन्यां संज्ञां नाम विवस्वते प्रसाद्य प्रणतो भूत्वा विश्वकर्मा प्रजापतिः
Tvashtar gave his daughter, named Samjna, to Vivasvat, having propitiated him and bowed before him, O lord of creatures.
त्रीण्य् अपत्यान्य् असौ तस्यां जनयाम् आस गोपतिः द्वौ पुत्रौ सुमहाभागौ कन्यां च यमुनां तथा
The lord of cattle begot three children in her: two sons of great splendor, and a daughter, Yamuna.
यत् तेजो ऽभ्यधिकं तस्य मार्तण्डस्य विवस्वतः तेनातितापयाम् आस त्रींल् लोकान् सचराचरान्
The radiance of Martanda Vivasvat was so intense that he scorched the three worlds, with all their moving and unmoving beings.
तद् रूपं गोलकाकारं दृष्ट्वा संज्ञा विवस्वतः असहन्ती महत् तेजः स्वां छायां वाक्यम् अब्रवीत्
Seeing that form of Vivasvat, shaped like a sphere, Samjna, unable to endure his great radiance, spoke to her own shadow.
अहं यास्यामि भद्रं ते स्वम् एव भवनं पितुः निर्विकारं त्वयात्रैव स्थेयं मच्छासनाच् छुभे
I shall go, blessings to you, to my own father's abode; you must remain here unchanged, by my command, O auspicious one.
इमौ च बालकौ मह्यं कन्या च वरवर्णिनी संभाव्या नैव चाख्येयम् इदं भगवते त्वया
These two sons and this beautiful daughter are to be considered as mine; you must never reveal this to the Lord.
