Daksha gave those maidens, thirteen in number, to Kashyapa; Aditi gave birth to the gods, rulers of the three worlds.
Diti and Danu bore fierce demons, proud and powerful; Vinata and the others likewise gave birth to various stationary and moving beings.
Thus, O sage, this entire world was filled by their sons, grandsons, and descendants, both of them and of those women.
Among the sons of Kashyapa, the principal groups of deities are known as sattvic, others as rajasic, and others as tamasic.
The creator, Prajapati, supreme among knowers of Brahman, made the gods, the enjoyers of sacrifices, and the rulers of the three worlds.
The Daityas and Danavas, together with their co-wives, opposed them; then, the sons were driven away by the Daityas and Danavas.
Seeing the three worlds destroyed, Aditi, O best of sages, cut off the shares of sacrifice, greatly afflicted by hunger.
For the worship of Savitṛ, she undertook the highest effort, with single-mindedness, regulated diet, and strict discipline; she praised the mass of radiance, the sun dwelling in the sky.
Salutations to you, who bear the supreme, subtle, most virtuous, incomparable brilliance, lord of those possessing brilliance, eternal foundation of brilliance.
For the benefit of the worlds, I praise you, O protector of cows; to that intense form which you assume when taking, I bow.
To that exceedingly intense form which you assume to absorb the watery essence over eight months, I bow.
To that form united with Agni and Soma, possessing qualities, I bow; that form of yours which shines through the unity of the Rig, Yajur, and Sama Vedas.
Homage to that eternal Radiance, the source of the threefold Veda, whose form is beyond all, invoked by the syllable Om—subtle, gross, and pure.
Thus, that steadfast goddess composed hymns day and night, fasting, desiring to propitiate Vivasvat, O twice-born.
Then, after a long time, the glorious Sun, O twice-born, appeared before that daughter of Daksha.
She beheld a great mass of radiance, veiled in light, standing upon the earth, blazing with flames and exceedingly difficult to look upon; seeing this, the goddess was seized by utmost fear.
O Lord of Cows, origin of the world, be gracious! I do not see you—grant me your favor so I may behold your form, O Sun, compassionate to devotees, protector of your worshippers—protect my sons.
Then, from that radiance, the shining Sun manifested, and the lord appeared, resembling molten copper.
Then the radiant one spoke to the goddess, who had bowed and could not see him, saying: 'Choose a single boon from me, whatever you desire.'
She, bowing her head and pressing her knees to the ground, addressed Vivasvat, the bestower of boons, who had appeared before her.
O god, be gracious! My sons have lost the three worlds, and their shares of the sacrifice have been taken by the Daityas and Danavas, who are stronger.
For this reason, O Lord of Cows, grant me your favor: become their brother by a portion of yourself and destroy those enemies.
So that my sons may again partake of the sacrificial shares, O Lord, and become rulers of the three worlds, O Sun.
Thus, O Sun, fulfill the desire of my sons according to this request; you are called the remover of distress—please accomplish this task.
Then the blessed Sun, the dispeller of darkness, addressed the bowed Aditi with a face full of grace, O twice-born.
By a thousandth part of myself, I will fully enter your womb; I will swiftly destroy your sons' enemies, contented.
Having spoken thus, the radiant Lord disappeared; she ceased her austerities, having obtained all her desires.
Then, from among the Sun's thousand rays, the one called Suṣumnā entered; at the year's end, it fulfilled her wish.
The Sun took up residence in the womb of the mother of the gods, and she, with great concentration, performed difficult vows such as Kṛcchra and Cāndrāyaṇa.
With purity she bore that divine embryo, saying, 'I sustain this divine child.' Then Kaśyapa addressed her, his words tinged with some anger.
