The Nāgas, subject to Suparṇa, were born with many heads; among them, Śeṣa, Vāsuki, and Takṣaka are always the chief.

Mahānīla, Mahākarṇa, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Balāhaka, Kuhara, Puṣpadaṃṣṭra, Durmukha, and Sumukha likewise.
Śaṅkha, Śaṅkhapāla, Kapila, Vāmana, Nahuṣa, Śaṅkharoma, and Maṇi—these are the foremost.
Their sons and grandsons numbered in the hundreds and thousands; fourteen thousand fierce, wind-eating ones.
O Brahmins, the entire Krodha lineage is composed of those with fangs; terrestrial, avian, and aquatic creatures are remembered as the offspring of the earth.
Surabhi gave birth to cows, and likewise to buffaloes; Irā produced all kinds of trees, creepers, vines, and grasses.
Khasā gave rise to yakṣas and rākṣasas, and the sage begot apsarases; Ariṣṭā produced the mighty and illustrious gandharvas.
These descendants of Kaśyapa, both stationary and moving beings, have been described, whose sons and grandsons are numbered in the hundreds and thousands.
O brāhmaṇas, this creation in the Svārociṣa Manvantara is remembered; in the vast Vaivasvata and the extended Vāruṇa sacrifices as well.
Now is told here the creation of beings by Brahmā, who offered oblations, when first the seven mind-born brahmarṣis arose.
The Grandfather himself established them as his sons; then, O twice-born, there was conflict between the gods and the dānavas.
Diti, bereft of her sons, sought to please Kaśyapa; and Kaśyapa, his mind appeased, was properly worshipped by her.
He offered her a boon of her choosing, and she then chose a son, powerful and mighty, for the purpose of slaying Indra.
Thus entreated, the great ascetic granted her the boon; after granting it, the formidable Mārīca spoke to her.
Your son will slay Indra, if you carry the embryo for a hundred years, steadfast in purity and observant of your vow.
The great ascetic, addressed thus by the goddess, agreed, and she, pure and foremost among sages, began to bear the embryo.
Then Kaśyapa, having implanted the embryo in Diti, departed, restraining the most excellent and mighty host of the gods.
Withdrawing his irresistible energy, which even the immortals could not withstand, he went to the mountain for ascetic practice, firm in his vow.
Desiring to find a flaw in her, Pākaśāsana (Indra) waited; when a hundred years had passed, the infallible one perceived an opening.
Diti, without performing the purification of her feet, lay down to sleep; as she slept, he entered her womb.
Then Vajrapāṇi (Indra) cut the embryo into seven pieces; as it was being split by the thunderbolt, the embryo cried out.
Indra repeatedly said to it, 'Do not cry.' Thus, the embryo became sevenfold, and Indra, angered, again acted.
With his thunderbolt, the enemy of foes divided each of the seven into seven parts; those gods became known as the Maruts, O best of twice-born.
Just as Maghavan had spoken, so the Maruts became, and the fifty-one gods allied with the wielder of the thunderbolt.
As those beings thus acted, O best of twice-born, they appointed the foremost hosts among the gods, those of immeasurable strength.
In each group, Hari gradually gave the lordships to the progenitors, O Brahmins, those ancient realms, broad and foremost.
That Hari, the heroic Person, Krishna, the victorious, the Lord of creatures, Parjanya, the sun, Ananta—he is all this world.
For those who truly know this creation of beings, O best of twice-born, there is no fear of return here; how much less fear of the next world?
Having anointed Pṛthu, son of Vena, as emperor, the Grandfather then began, step by step, to assign the realms.
