अस्य रश्मिसहस्राणि शाखा इव विहंगमाः वसन्त्य् आश्रित्य मुनयः संसिद्धा दैवतैः सह
Thousands of his rays, like branches and birds, are the refuge of accomplished sages who dwell there together with the gods.
गृहस्था जनकाद्याश् च राजानो योगधर्मिणः वालखिल्यादयश् चैव ऋषयो ब्रह्मवादिनः
Householders like Janaka and others, kings established in yoga, and sages like the Vālakhilyas, speakers of Brahman—
वानप्रस्थाश् च ये चान्ये व्यासाद्या भिक्षवस् तथा योगम् आस्थाय सर्वे ते प्रविष्टाः सूर्यमण्डलम्
And forest-dwellers, and others such as Vyāsa and mendicants—having taken up yoga, all of them have entered the solar orb.
शुको व्याससुतः श्रीमान् योगधर्मम् अवाप्य सः आदित्यकिरणान् गत्वा ह्य् अपुनर्भावम् आस्थितः
Śuka, the illustrious son of Vyāsa, having attained the path of yoga, reached the rays of the sun and established himself in non-return.
शब्दमात्रश्रुतिमुखा ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादयः प्रत्यक्षो ऽयं परो देवः सूर्यस् तिमिरनाशनः
Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and others are known only through words and hearsay; but this supreme god, the sun, destroyer of darkness, is directly visible.
तस्माद् अन्यत्र भक्तिर् हि न कार्या शुभम् इच्छता यस्माद् दृष्टेर् अगम्यास् ते देवा विष्णुपुरोगमाः
Therefore, devotion should not be directed elsewhere by one who desires auspiciousness, for those gods led by Viṣṇu are inaccessible to sight.
अतो भवद्भिः सततम् अभ्यर्च्यो भगवान् रविः स हि माता पिता चैव कृत्स्नस्य जगतो गुरुः
Therefore, you should always worship the blessed Sun; for he is the mother, the father, and the teacher of the entire world.
अनाद्यो लोकनाथो ऽसौ रश्मिमाली जगत्पतिः मित्रत्वे च स्थितो यस्मात् तपस् तेपे द्विजोत्तमाः
He, the lord of the worlds, without beginning, adorned with rays, is the master of the universe; and because he abides as a friend, he performed austerities, O best of twice-born.
अनादिनिधनो ब्रह्मा नित्यश् चाक्षय एव च सृष्ट्वा ससागरान् द्वीपान् भुवनानि चतुर्दश
Brahmā is without beginning or end, eternal, and imperishable; having created the continents with their oceans and the fourteen worlds.
लोकानां स हितार्थाय स्थितश् चन्द्रसरित्तटे सृष्ट्वा प्रजापतीन् सर्वान् सृष्ट्वा च विविधाः प्रजाः
For the welfare of the worlds, he abides on the banks of the lunar river, having created all the lords of creatures and various beings.
ततः शतसहस्रांशुर् अव्यक्तश् च पुनः स्वयम् कृत्वा द्वादशधात्मानम् आदित्यम् उपपद्यते
Then, the thousand-rayed one, himself unmanifest, having made himself twelvefold, becomes the Sun.
इन्द्रो धाताथ पर्जन्यस् त्वष्टा पूषार्यमा भगः विवस्वान् विष्णुर् अंशश् च वरुणो मित्र एव च
Indra, Dhātā, Parjanya, Tvaṣṭṛ, Pūṣan, Aryaman, Bhaga, Vivasvān, Viṣṇu, Aṃśa, Varuṇa, and Mitra—
आभिर् द्वादशभिस् तेन सूर्येण परमात्मना कृत्स्नं जगद् इदं व्याप्तं मूर्तिभिश् च द्विजोत्तमाः
By these twelve forms, that supreme Self, the Sun, pervades this entire world with his manifestations, O best of twice-born.
तस्य या प्रथमा मूर्तिर् आदित्यस्येन्द्रसंज्ञिता स्थिता सा देवराजत्वे देवानां रिपुनाशिनी
His first form, called Indra, stands as the king of the gods, destroying the enemies of the gods.
द्वितीया तस्य या मूर्तिर् नाम्ना धातेति कीर्तिता स्थिता प्रजापतित्वेन विविधाः सृजते प्रजाः
His second form, known by the name Dhātā, abides as the lord of creatures and creates various beings.
तृतीयार्कस्य या मूर्तिः पर्जन्य इति विश्रुता मेघेष्व् एव स्थिता सा तु वर्षते च गभस्तिभिः
The third form of the Sun, renowned as Parjanya, abides in the clouds and causes rain with his rays.
चतुर्थी तस्य या मूर्तिर् नाम्ना त्वष्टेति विश्रुता स्थिता वनस्पतौ सा तु ओषधीषु च सर्वतः
His fourth form, known as Tvaṣṭṛ, abides in trees and in all plants everywhere.
पञ्चमी तस्य या मूर्तिर् नाम्ना पूषेति विश्रुता अन्ने व्यवस्थिता सा तु प्रजां पुष्णाति नित्यशः
His fifth form, called Pūṣan, is established in food and always nourishes living beings.
मूर्तिः षष्ठी रवेर् या तु अर्यमा इति विश्रुता वायोः संसरणा सा तु देवेष्व् एव समाश्रिता
The sixth form of the Sun, known as Aryaman, is the movement in the wind and is found among the gods.
भानोर् या सप्तमी मूर्तिर् नाम्ना भगेति विश्रुता भूयिष्व् अवस्थिता सा तु शरीरेषु च देहिनाम्
The seventh form of the Sun, called Bhaga, abides in abundance and in the bodies of living beings.
मूर्तिर् या त्व् अष्टमी तस्य विवस्वान् इति विश्रुता अग्नौ प्रतिष्ठिता सा तु पचत्य् अन्नं शरीरिणाम्
His eighth form, known as Vivasvān, is established in fire and cooks the food of embodied beings.
नवमी चित्रभानोर् या मूर्तिर् विष्णुश् च नामतः प्रादुर्भवति सा नित्यं देवानाम् अरिसूदनी
The ninth form of the radiant Sun, named Viṣṇu, appears continually and destroys the enemies of the gods.
दशमी तस्य या मूर्तिर् अंशुमान् इति विश्रुता वायौ प्रतिष्ठिता सा तु प्रह्लादयति वै प्रजाः
His tenth form, known as Aṃśumān, is established in the wind and brings delight to living beings.
मूर्तिस् त्व् एकादशी भानोर् नाम्ना वरुणसंज्ञिता जलेष्व् अवस्थिता सा तु प्रजां पुष्णाति नित्यशः
The eleventh form of the Sun, called Varuṇa, abides in the waters and always nourishes living beings.
मूर्तिर् या द्वादशी भानोर् नाम्ना मित्रेति संज्ञिता लोकानां सा हितार्थाय स्थिता चन्द्रसरित्तटे
The twelfth form of the Sun, known by the name Mitra, stands established on the banks of the lunar river for the welfare of the worlds.
वायुभक्षस् तपस् तेपे स्थित्वा मैत्रेण चक्षुषा अनुगृह्णन् सदा भक्तान् वरैर् नानाविधैस् तु सः
Sustaining himself on air, he performed austerities, remaining with the vision of friendship, always granting various boons to devoted followers.
एवं सा जगतां मूर्तिर् हिता विहिता पुरा तत्र मित्रः स्थितो यस्मात् तस्मान् मित्रं परं स्मृतम्
Thus, that form for the good of the worlds was established in ancient times; because Mitra stood there, he is therefore remembered as the supreme friend.
आभिर् द्वादशभिस् तेन सवित्रा परमात्मना कृत्स्नं जगद् इदं व्याप्तं मूर्तिभिश् च द्विजोत्तमाः
By these twelve forms, O best of twice-born, the Supreme Soul Savitṛ has pervaded this entire universe.
तस्माद् ध्येयो नमस्यश् च द्वादशस्थासु मूर्तिषु भक्तिमद्भिर् नरैर् नित्यं तद्गतेनान्तरात्मना
Therefore, in the twelve abodes, the forms are to be meditated upon and worshipped by devoted men, with minds absorbed in him at all times.
इत्य् एवं द्वादशादित्यान् नमस्कृत्वा तु मानवः नित्यं श्रुत्वा पठित्वा च सूर्यलोके महीयते
Thus, having saluted the twelve Ādityas, a person who listens to and recites this daily is honored in the world of the Sun.
