क्षीरेण तर्पणं कृत्वा मनस् तापैर् न युज्यते दध्ना तु तर्पणं कृत्वा कार्यसिद्धिं लभेन् नरः
By offering libation with milk, one’s mind is not afflicted by distress; by offering with curds, a person attains success in undertakings.
स्नानार्थम् आहरेद् यस् तु जलं भानोः समाहितः तीर्थेषु शुचितापन्नः स याति परमां गतिम्
Whoever, with concentration, draws water for bathing the Sun, and does so at a sacred place with purity, attains the highest state.
छत्त्रं ध्वजं वितानं वा पताकां चामराणि च श्रद्धया भानवे दत्त्वा गतिम् इष्टाम् अवाप्नुयात्
By giving an umbrella, banner, canopy, flag, or fly-whisk to the Sun with faith, one attains the desired goal.
यद् यद् द्रव्यं नरो भक्त्या आदित्याय प्रयच्छति तत् तस्य शतसाहस्रम् उत्पादयति भास्करः
Whatever substance a man offers to the Sun with devotion, the Sun multiplies that for him a hundred thousand times.
मानसं वाचिकं वापि कायजं यच् च दुष्कृतम् सर्वं सूर्यप्रसादेन तद् अशेषं व्यपोहति
By the Sun’s grace, all misdeeds—mental, verbal, or physical—are completely removed.
एकाहेनापि यद् भानोः पूजायाः प्राप्यते फलम् यथोक्तदक्षिणैर् विप्रैर् न तत् क्रतुशतैर् अपि
Even the fruit obtained from worshipping the Sun for a single day, with the prescribed gifts to Brahmins, is not gained by a hundred sacrifices.
अहो देवस्य माहात्म्यं श्रुतम् एवं जगत्पते भास्करस्य सुरश्रेष्ठ वदतस् तेषु दुर्लभम्
Ah, the greatness of the god has thus been heard, O Lord of the world! O best of gods, what you have spoken is rare among them.
भूयः प्रब्रूहि देवेश यत् पृच्छामो जगत्पते श्रोतुम् इच्छामहे ब्रह्मन् परं कौतूहलं हि नः
Speak again, O Lord of gods, what we ask, O Lord of the world; we wish to hear, O Brahman, for our curiosity is indeed great.
गृहस्थो ब्रह्मचारी च वानप्रस्थो ऽथ भिक्षुकः य इच्छेन् मोक्षम् आस्थातुं देवतां कां यजेत सः
A householder, a student, a forest-dweller, or a mendicant—whoever wishes to attain liberation should worship some deity.
कुतो ह्य् अस्याक्षयः स्वर्गः कुतो निःश्रेयसं परम् स्वर्गतश् चैव किं कुर्याद् येन न च्यवते पुनः
How can there be everlasting heaven for him? How can there be the highest good? And, having reached heaven, what should one do so as not to fall again?
देवानां चात्र को देवः पितॄणां चैव कः पिता यस्मात् परतरं नास्ति तन् मे ब्रूहि सुरेश्वर
Who among the gods is the supreme deity, and who among the ancestors is the supreme ancestor? Tell me, O Lord of the gods, that from which nothing is higher.
कुतः सृष्टम् इदं विश्वं सर्वं स्थावरजङ्गमम् प्रलये च कम् अभ्येति तद् भवान् वक्तुम् अर्हति
From where was this entire universe, all that is moving and unmoving, created? And at dissolution, to whom does it return? You are worthy to speak of this.
उद्यन्न् एवैष कुरुते जगद् वितिमिरं करैः नातः परतरो देवः कश्चिद् अन्यो द्विजोत्तमाः
As he rises, he dispels the darkness of the world with his rays; there is no deity higher than him, O best of twice-born.
अनादिनिधनो ह्य् एष पुरुषः शाश्वतो ऽव्ययः तापयत्य् एष त्रींल् लोकान् भवन् रश्मिभिर् उल्बणः
He is without beginning or end, eternal, imperishable; with his fierce rays, he scorches the three worlds.
सर्वदेवमयो ह्य् एष तपतां तपनो वरः सर्वस्य जगतो नाथः सर्वसाक्षी जगत्पतिः
He is composed of all the gods, the foremost among those who shine; he is the lord of the whole world, the witness of all, the master of the universe.
संक्षिपत्य् एष भूतानि तथा विसृजते पुनः एष भाति तपत्य् एष वर्षत्य् एष गभस्तिभिः
He contracts all beings and then creates them again; he shines, he heats, he rains with his beams.
एष धाता विधाता च भूतादिर् भूतभावनः न ह्य् एष क्षयम् आयाति नित्यम् अक्षयमण्डलः
He is the creator and the ordainer, the origin and sustainer of beings; he never perishes, his orb is eternal and undecaying.
पितॄणां च पिता ह्य् एष देवतानां हि देवता ध्रुवं स्थानं स्मृतं ह्य् एतद् यस्मान् न च्यवते पुनः
He is indeed the ancestor of the ancestors, the deity of the deities; this is the firm place, for from it there is no return.
सर्गकाले जगत् कृत्स्नम् आदित्यात् संप्रसूयते प्रलये च तम् अभ्येति भास्करं दीप्ततेजसम्
At the time of creation, the entire world is born from the sun; and at dissolution, it returns to him, the radiant illuminator.
योगिनश् चाप्य् असंख्यातास् त्यक्त्वा गृहकलेवरम् वायुर् भूत्वा विशन्त्य् अस्मिंस् तेजोराशौ दिवाकरे
Countless yogis, having abandoned their mortal bodies, become like wind and enter into this mass of light, the sun.
अस्य रश्मिसहस्राणि शाखा इव विहंगमाः वसन्त्य् आश्रित्य मुनयः संसिद्धा दैवतैः सह
Thousands of his rays, like branches and birds, are the refuge of accomplished sages who dwell there together with the gods.
गृहस्था जनकाद्याश् च राजानो योगधर्मिणः वालखिल्यादयश् चैव ऋषयो ब्रह्मवादिनः
Householders like Janaka and others, kings established in yoga, and sages like the Vālakhilyas, speakers of Brahman—
वानप्रस्थाश् च ये चान्ये व्यासाद्या भिक्षवस् तथा योगम् आस्थाय सर्वे ते प्रविष्टाः सूर्यमण्डलम्
And forest-dwellers, and others such as Vyāsa and mendicants—having taken up yoga, all of them have entered the solar orb.
शुको व्याससुतः श्रीमान् योगधर्मम् अवाप्य सः आदित्यकिरणान् गत्वा ह्य् अपुनर्भावम् आस्थितः
Śuka, the illustrious son of Vyāsa, having attained the path of yoga, reached the rays of the sun and established himself in non-return.
शब्दमात्रश्रुतिमुखा ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादयः प्रत्यक्षो ऽयं परो देवः सूर्यस् तिमिरनाशनः
Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and others are known only through words and hearsay; but this supreme god, the sun, destroyer of darkness, is directly visible.
तस्माद् अन्यत्र भक्तिर् हि न कार्या शुभम् इच्छता यस्माद् दृष्टेर् अगम्यास् ते देवा विष्णुपुरोगमाः
Therefore, devotion should not be directed elsewhere by one who desires auspiciousness, for those gods led by Viṣṇu are inaccessible to sight.
अतो भवद्भिः सततम् अभ्यर्च्यो भगवान् रविः स हि माता पिता चैव कृत्स्नस्य जगतो गुरुः
Therefore, you should always worship the blessed Sun; for he is the mother, the father, and the teacher of the entire world.
अनाद्यो लोकनाथो ऽसौ रश्मिमाली जगत्पतिः मित्रत्वे च स्थितो यस्मात् तपस् तेपे द्विजोत्तमाः
He, the lord of the worlds, without beginning, adorned with rays, is the master of the universe; and because he abides as a friend, he performed austerities, O best of twice-born.
अनादिनिधनो ब्रह्मा नित्यश् चाक्षय एव च सृष्ट्वा ससागरान् द्वीपान् भुवनानि चतुर्दश
Brahmā is without beginning or end, eternal, and imperishable; having created the continents with their oceans and the fourteen worlds.
लोकानां स हितार्थाय स्थितश् चन्द्रसरित्तटे सृष्ट्वा प्रजापतीन् सर्वान् सृष्ट्वा च विविधाः प्रजाः
For the welfare of the worlds, he abides on the banks of the lunar river, having created all the lords of creatures and various beings.
