तस्मात् प्रयत्नम् आस्थाय दद्याद् अर्घ्यं दिने दिने आदित्याय शुचिर् भूत्वा पुष्पैर् गन्धैर् मनोरमैः
Therefore, with effort, one should give an offering of water every day to Āditya, having become pure and with delightful flowers and fragrances.
एवं ददाति यश् चार्घ्यं सप्तम्यां सुसमाहितः आदित्याय शुचिः स्नातः स लभेद् ईप्सितं फलम्
Whoever, with a pure mind and after bathing, offers such water to Āditya on the seventh day, attains the desired result.
रोगाद् विमुच्यते रोगी वित्तार्थी लभते धनम् विद्यां प्राप्नोति विद्यार्थी सुतार्थी पुत्रवान् भवेत्
The sick are freed from illness, the seeker of wealth obtains riches, the seeker of knowledge gains learning, and the seeker of sons becomes a father.
यं यं कामम् अभिध्यायन् सूर्यायार्घ्यं प्रयच्छति तस्य तस्य फलं सम्यक् प्राप्नोति पुरुषः सुधीः
Whatever desire a wise person contemplates while offering water to Sūrya, he fully attains the fruit of that very desire.
स्नात्वा वै सागरे दत्त्वा सूर्यायार्घ्यं प्रणम्य च नरो वा यदि वा नारी सर्वकामफलं लभेत्
Having bathed in the ocean, after offering water to Sūrya and bowing, whether man or woman, one obtains the fruit of all desires.
ततः सूर्यालयं गच्छेत् पुष्पम् आदाय वाग्यतः प्रविश्य पूजयेद् भानुं कृत्वा तु त्रिः प्रदक्षिणम्
Then, taking flowers and with controlled speech, one should go to the temple of Sūrya, enter, worship Bhānu, and circumambulate three times.
पूजयेत् परया भक्त्या कोणार्कं मुनिसत्तमाः गन्धैः पुष्पैस् तथा दीपैर् धूपैर् नैवेद्यकैर् अपि
O best of sages, one should worship Koṇārka with supreme devotion, with fragrances, flowers, lamps, incense, and offerings of food.
दण्डवत् प्रणिपातैश् च जयशब्दैस् तथा स्तवैः एवं संपूज्य तं देवं सहस्रांशुं जगत्पतिम्
With prostrations like a staff, with cries of victory, and with hymns, thus worshipping that god, the thousand-rayed lord of the world.
दशानाम् अश्वमेधानां फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो युवा दिव्यवपुर् नरः
A man obtains the fruit of ten Aśvamedha sacrifices, becomes free from all sins, and, youthful, attains a divine body.
सप्तावरान् सप्त परान् वंशान् उद्धृत्य भो द्विजाः विमानेनार्कवर्णेन कामगेन सुवर्चसा
O twice-born, having uplifted seven generations before and after, he ascends in a radiant, wish-fulfilling chariot resembling the sun.
उपगीयमानो गन्धर्वैः सूर्यलोकं स गच्छति भुक्त्वा तत्र वरान् भोगान् यावद् आभूतसंप्लवम्
Praised by the Gandharvas, he goes to the world of the sun and enjoys excellent pleasures there until the end of the cosmic cycle.
पुण्यक्षयाद् इहायातः प्रवरे योगिनां कुले चतुर्वेदो भवेद् विप्रः स्वधर्मनिरतः शुचिः
When his merit is exhausted, he is born here in the noble family of yogins, becomes a brāhmaṇa versed in the four Vedas, devoted to his own duty and pure.
योगं विवस्वतः प्राप्य ततो मोक्षम् अवाप्नुयात् चैत्रे मासि सिते पक्षे यात्रां दमनभञ्जिकाम्
Having attained the yoga of Vivasvat, he then obtains liberation; in the month of Caitra, during the bright fortnight, is the pilgrimage called Damanabhañjikā.
यः करोति नरस् तत्र पूर्वोक्तं स फलं लभेत् शयनोत्थापने भानोः संक्रान्त्यां विषुवायने
Whoever performs there what was previously described attains that fruit, whether at sunrise, at the solstice, or at the equinox.
वारे रवेस् तिथौ चैव पर्वकाले ऽथवा द्विजाः ये तत्र यात्रां कुर्वन्ति श्रद्धया संयतेन्द्रियाः
O twice-born, on the day of the sun, on the lunar day, or at the time of a festival, those who undertake the pilgrimage there with faith and controlled senses—
विमानेनार्कवर्णेन सूर्यलोकं व्रजन्ति ते आस्ते तत्र महादेवस् तीरे नदनदीपतेः
They ascend in a radiant chariot to the world of the sun and dwell there on the great bank of the lord of rivers.
रामेश्वर इति ख्यातः सर्वकामफलप्रदः ये तं पश्यन्ति कामारिं स्नात्वा सम्यङ् महोदधौ
He is known as Rāmeśvara, the bestower of all desired fruits; those who behold that enemy of desire, after bathing properly in the great ocean,
गन्धैः पुष्पैस् तथा धूपैर् दीपैर् नैवेद्यकैर् वरैः प्रणिपातैस् तथा स्तोत्रैर् गीतैर् वाद्यैर् मनोहरैः
with fragrances, flowers, incense, lamps, excellent offerings of food, prostrations, hymns, songs, and delightful music,
राजसूयफलं सम्यग् वाजिमेधफलं तथा प्राप्नुवन्ति महात्मानः संसिद्धिं परमां तथा
those great souls attain fully the fruit of the Rājasūya and likewise the fruit of the Aśvamedha, and also supreme accomplishment.
कामगेन विमानेन किङ्किणीजालमालिना उपगीयमाना गन्धर्वैः शिवलोकं व्रजन्ति ते
In a celestial chariot born of desire, adorned with networks of bells, praised by Gandharvas, they go to the world of Śiva.
आहूतसंप्लवं यावद् भुक्त्वा भोगान् मनोरमान् पुण्यक्षयाद् इहागत्य चातुर्वेदा भवन्ति ते
There, until the end of the cosmic flood, enjoying delightful pleasures, when their merit is exhausted, they return here and become masters of the four Vedas.
शांकरं योगम् आस्थाय ततो मोक्षं व्रजन्ति ते यस् तत्र सवितुः क्षेत्रे प्राणांस् त्यजति मानवः
Having established themselves in the yoga of Śaṅkara, they then attain liberation—whoever gives up their life in that field of the Sun.
स सूर्यलोकम् आस्थाय देववन् मोदते दिवि पुनर् मानुषतां प्राप्य राजा भवति धार्मिकः
He, having reached the world of the Sun, delights in heaven like a god; then, regaining human birth, becomes a righteous king.
योगं रवेः समासाद्य ततो मोक्षम् अवाप्नुयात् एवं मया मुनिश्रेष्ठाः प्रोक्तं क्षेत्रं सुदुर्लभम्
By attaining the yoga of the Sun, one then obtains liberation. Thus, O best of sages, I have described the exceedingly rare field.
कोणार्कस्योदधेस् तीरे भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदः
On the shore of the ocean at Koṇārka, it bestows both enjoyment and liberation.
श्रुतो ऽस्माभिः सुरश्रेष्ठ भवता यद् उदाहृतम् भास्करस्य परं क्षेत्रं भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदम्
We have heard, O best of gods, what you have recounted—the supreme field of Bhāskara, which grants both enjoyment and liberation.
न तृप्तिम् अधिगच्छामः शृण्वन्तः सुखदां कथाम् तव वक्त्रोद्भवां पुण्याम् आदित्यस्याघनाशिनीम्
We do not attain satisfaction, hearing your bliss-giving tale, holy and born from your lips, which destroys the sins of the Sun.
अतः परं सुरश्रेष्ठ ब्रूहि नो वदतां वर देवपूजाफलं यच् च यच् च दानफलं प्रभो
Therefore, O best of gods, tell us, O foremost of speakers, what is the fruit of worshipping the gods and what is the fruit of giving, O Lord.
प्रणिपाते नमस्कारे तथा चैव प्रदक्षिणे दीपधूपप्रदाने च संमार्जनविधौ च यत्
In prostration, salutation, circumambulation, offering of lamps and incense, and in the act of sweeping—what merit is there?
उपवासे च यत् पुण्यं यत् पुण्यं नक्तभोजने अर्घश् च कीदृशः प्रोक्तः कुत्र वा संप्रदीयते
And what merit is there in fasting, in eating only at night, and what kind of arghya is prescribed, and where is it offered?
