देवान् ऋषीन् मनुष्यांश् च पितॄन् संतर्प्य च द्विजाः उत्तीर्य वाससी धौते परिधाय सुनिर्मले
Having satisfied the gods, sages, humans, and ancestors, O twice-born, and after crossing over, having washed garments and put on clean, spotless clothes,
आचम्य प्रयतो भूत्वा तीरे तस्य महोदधेः उपविश्योदये काले प्राङ्मुखः सवितुस् तदा
Having sipped water, becoming pure in mind, at the shore of that great ocean, one should sit at sunrise, facing east, at that time of the Sun.
विलिख्य पद्मं मेधावी रक्तचन्दनवारिणा अष्टपत्त्रं केसराढ्यं वर्तुलं चोर्ध्वकर्णिकम्
The wise one should draw a lotus with red sandalwood water—eight-petaled, rich with filaments, round, and with an upright pericarp.
तिलतण्डुलतोयं च रक्तचन्दनसंयुतम् रक्तपुष्पं सदर्भं च प्रक्षिपेत् ताम्रभाजने
Sesame, rice, and water, mixed with red sandalwood, along with a red flower and sacred grass, should be placed in a copper vessel.
ताम्राभावे ऽर्कपत्त्रस्य पुटे कृत्वा तिलादिकम् पिधाय तन् मुनिश्रेष्ठाः पात्रं पात्रेण विन्यसेत्
If copper is unavailable, the sesame and other items should be placed in a leaf of the arka plant, and, covering it, O best of sages, one vessel should be set within another.
करन्यासाङ्गविन्यासं कृत्वाङ्गैर् हृदयादिभिः आत्मानं भास्करं ध्यात्वा सम्यक् श्रद्धासमन्वितः
Having performed the hand and limb gestures with the heart and other limbs, and meditating upon oneself as the Sun, one should be filled with proper faith.
मध्ये चाग्निदले धीमान् नैरृते श्वसने दले कामारिगोचरे चैव पुनर् मध्ये च पूजयेत्
In the center, on the petal of Fire, in the southwest on the petal of Wind, in the domain of the enemy of Desire, and again in the center, one should worship.
प्रभूतं विमलं सारम् आराध्यं परमं सुखम् संपूज्य पद्मम् आवाह्य गगनात् तत्र भास्करम्
Having worshipped the abundant, pure, essential, and supremely blissful, and having fully honored the lotus, one should invoke the Sun there from the sky.
कर्णिकोपरि संस्थाप्य ततो मुद्रां प्रदर्शयेत् कृत्वा स्नानादिकं सर्वं ध्यात्वा तं सुसमाहितः
Placing it upon the pericarp, then displaying the hand gesture, having completed all the bathing and other rites, one should meditate upon Him with full concentration.
सितपद्मोपरि रविं तेजोबिम्बे व्यवस्थितम् पिङ्गाक्षं द्विभुजं रक्तं पद्मपत्त्रारुणाम्बरम्
Upon a white lotus, the Sun is established as a radiant orb, tawny-eyed, two-armed, red, clothed in garments the color of lotus petals.
सर्वलक्षणसंयुक्तं सर्वाभरणभूषितम् सुरूपं वरदं शान्तं प्रभामण्डलमण्डितम्
Endowed with all auspicious marks, adorned with every ornament, of beautiful form, bestower of boons, peaceful, and encircled by a halo of light.
उद्यन्तं भास्करं दृष्ट्वा सान्द्रसिन्दूरसंनिभम् ततस् तत् पात्रम् आदाय जानुभ्यां धरणीं गतः
Beholding the rising Sun, resembling dense vermilion, then, taking that vessel, one should go to the ground on one's knees.
कृत्वा शिरसि तत् पात्रम् एकचित्तस् तु वाग्यतः त्र्यक्षरेण तु मन्त्रेण सूर्यायार्घ्यं निवेदयेत्
Holding that vessel upon the head, with single-mindedness and control of speech, with the three-syllabled mantra, one should offer arghya to the Sun.
अदीक्षितस् तु तस्यैव नाम्नैवार्घं प्रयच्छति श्रद्धया भावयुक्तेन भक्तिग्राह्यो रविर् यतः
But one who is not initiated should offer arghya only with His name; with faith and a mind filled with devotion, for the Sun accepts devotion.
अग्निनिरृतिवाय्वीशमध्यपूर्वादिदिक्षु च हृच् छिरश् च शिखावर्मनेत्राण्य् अस्त्रं च पूजयेत्
In the directions of Fire, Nirṛti, Wind, Īśa, East, and others, one should worship the heart, head, topknot, armor, eyes, and the weapon.
दत्त्वार्घ्यं गन्धधूपं च दीपं नैवेद्यम् एव च जप्त्वा स्तुत्वा नमस् कृत्वा मुद्रां बद्ध्वा विसर्जयेत्
Having offered arghya, and also fragrance, incense, lamp, and food, reciting, praising, bowing, and forming the hand gesture, one should dismiss (the deity).
ये वार्घ्यं संप्रयच्छन्ति सूर्याय नियतेन्द्रियाः ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः स्त्रियः शूद्राश् च संयताः
Those who offer arghya to the Sun with controlled senses—Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, women, and restrained Shudras—
भक्तिभावेन सततं विशुद्धेनान्तरात्मना ते भुक्त्वाभिमतान् कामान् प्राप्नुवन्ति परां गतिम्
With constant devotion and a purified inner self, after enjoying their desired pleasures, they attain the supreme state.
त्रैलोक्यदीपकं देवं भास्करं गगनेचरम् ये संश्रयन्ति मनुजास् ते स्युः सुखस्य भाजनम्
Those men who take refuge in Bhāskara, the god who moves through the sky and is the lamp of the three worlds, become recipients of happiness.
यावन् न दीयते चार्घ्यं भास्कराय यथोदितम् तावन् न पूजयेद् विष्णुं शंकरं वा सुरेश्वरम्
Until the offering of water, as prescribed, is given to Bhāskara, one should not worship Viṣṇu or Śaṃkara, the lords of the gods.
तस्मात् प्रयत्नम् आस्थाय दद्याद् अर्घ्यं दिने दिने आदित्याय शुचिर् भूत्वा पुष्पैर् गन्धैर् मनोरमैः
Therefore, with effort, one should give an offering of water every day to Āditya, having become pure and with delightful flowers and fragrances.
एवं ददाति यश् चार्घ्यं सप्तम्यां सुसमाहितः आदित्याय शुचिः स्नातः स लभेद् ईप्सितं फलम्
Whoever, with a pure mind and after bathing, offers such water to Āditya on the seventh day, attains the desired result.
रोगाद् विमुच्यते रोगी वित्तार्थी लभते धनम् विद्यां प्राप्नोति विद्यार्थी सुतार्थी पुत्रवान् भवेत्
The sick are freed from illness, the seeker of wealth obtains riches, the seeker of knowledge gains learning, and the seeker of sons becomes a father.
यं यं कामम् अभिध्यायन् सूर्यायार्घ्यं प्रयच्छति तस्य तस्य फलं सम्यक् प्राप्नोति पुरुषः सुधीः
Whatever desire a wise person contemplates while offering water to Sūrya, he fully attains the fruit of that very desire.
स्नात्वा वै सागरे दत्त्वा सूर्यायार्घ्यं प्रणम्य च नरो वा यदि वा नारी सर्वकामफलं लभेत्
Having bathed in the ocean, after offering water to Sūrya and bowing, whether man or woman, one obtains the fruit of all desires.
ततः सूर्यालयं गच्छेत् पुष्पम् आदाय वाग्यतः प्रविश्य पूजयेद् भानुं कृत्वा तु त्रिः प्रदक्षिणम्
Then, taking flowers and with controlled speech, one should go to the temple of Sūrya, enter, worship Bhānu, and circumambulate three times.
पूजयेत् परया भक्त्या कोणार्कं मुनिसत्तमाः गन्धैः पुष्पैस् तथा दीपैर् धूपैर् नैवेद्यकैर् अपि
O best of sages, one should worship Koṇārka with supreme devotion, with fragrances, flowers, lamps, incense, and offerings of food.
दण्डवत् प्रणिपातैश् च जयशब्दैस् तथा स्तवैः एवं संपूज्य तं देवं सहस्रांशुं जगत्पतिम्
With prostrations like a staff, with cries of victory, and with hymns, thus worshipping that god, the thousand-rayed lord of the world.
दशानाम् अश्वमेधानां फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो युवा दिव्यवपुर् नरः
A man obtains the fruit of ten Aśvamedha sacrifices, becomes free from all sins, and, youthful, attains a divine body.
सप्तावरान् सप्त परान् वंशान् उद्धृत्य भो द्विजाः विमानेनार्कवर्णेन कामगेन सुवर्चसा
O twice-born, having uplifted seven generations before and after, he ascends in a radiant, wish-fulfilling chariot resembling the sun.
