तत्रास्ते भारते वर्षे दक्षिणोदधिसंस्थितः ओण्ड्रदेश इति ख्यातः स्वर्गमोक्षप्रदायकः
There, in the land of Bhārata, situated by the southern ocean, is the region known as Oṇḍra, which grants heaven and liberation.
समुद्राद् उत्तरं तावद् यावद् विरजमण्डलम् देशो ऽसौ पुण्यशीलानां गुणैः सर्वैर् अलंकृतः
From the ocean northward up to the Viraja circle, that region is adorned with all virtues and is the abode of the righteous.
तत्र देशप्रसूता ये ब्राह्मणाः संयतेन्द्रियाः तपःस्वाध्यायनिरता वन्द्याः पूज्याश् च ते सदा
There, the Brahmins born in that land, who are disciplined in their senses and devoted to austerity and study, are always worthy of respect and worship.
श्राद्धे दाने विवाहे च यज्ञे वाचार्यकर्मणि प्रशस्ताः सर्वकार्येषु तत्रदेशोद्भवा द्विजाः
In rites for ancestors, in giving, in marriage, in sacrifice, and in teaching, the twice-born originating from that region are esteemed in all undertakings.
षट्कर्मनिरतास् तत्र ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः इतिहासविदश् चैव पुराणार्थविशारदाः
There, the Brahmins are engaged in the six duties, accomplished in the Vedas, knowledgeable in history, and skilled in the meanings of the Purāṇas.
सर्वशास्त्रार्थकुशला यज्वानो वीतमत्सराः अग्निहोत्ररताः केचित् केचित् स्मार्ताग्नितत्पराः
Expert in the meanings of all scriptures, performers of sacrifice, free from envy, some are devoted to Agnihotra, others are intent upon the ritual fires prescribed by tradition.
पुत्रदारधनैर् युक्ता दातारः सत्यवादिनः निवसन्त्य् उत्कले पुण्ये यज्ञोत्सवविभूषिते
Endowed with sons, wives, and wealth, generous and truthful in speech, they dwell in Utkala, the sacred land adorned with festivals of sacrifice.
इतरे ऽपि त्रयो वर्णाः क्षत्रियाद्याः सुसंयताः स्वकर्मनिरताः शान्तास् तत्र तिष्ठन्ति धार्मिकाः
The other three classes—beginning with the Kṣatriyas—are also well-disciplined, devoted to their own duties, peaceful, and righteous, residing there.
कोणादित्य इति ख्यातस् तस्मिन् देशे व्यवस्थितः यं दृष्ट्वा भास्करं मर्त्यः सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
In that region stands the renowned Koṇāditya; seeing that Sun, a mortal is freed from all sins.
श्रोतुम् इच्छाम तद् ब्रूहि क्षेत्रं सूर्यस्य सांप्रतम् तस्मिन् देशे सुरश्रेष्ठ यत्रास्ते स दिवाकरः
We wish to hear, so tell us now, O best of gods, about the field of the Sun in that region where the Sun resides.
लवणस्योदधेस् तीरे पवित्रे सुमनोहरे सर्वत्र वालुकाकीर्णे देशे सर्वगुणान्विते
On the shore of the salty ocean, pure and delightful, everywhere strewn with sand, in a land endowed with all virtues.
चम्पकाशोकबकुलैः करवीरैः सपाटलैः पुंनागैः कर्णिकारैश् च बकुलैर् नागकेसरैः
With campaka, aśoka, bakula, karavīra, pāṭala, puṃnāga, karṇikāra, bakula, and nāgakesara trees.
तगरैर् धवबाणैश् च अतिमुक्तैः सकुब्जकैः मालतीकुन्दपुष्पैश् च तथान्यैर् मल्लिकादिभिः
With tagara, dhava, bāṇa, atimukta, kubjaka, mālatī, kunda flowers, and other jasmine-like blossoms.
केतकीवनखण्डैश् च सर्वर्तुकुसुमोज्ज्वलैः कदम्बैर् लकुचैः शालैः पनसैर् देवदारुभिः
With groves of ketakī, radiant with flowers of all seasons, kadamba, lakuca, śāla, jackfruit, and devadāru trees.
सरलैर् मुचुकुन्दैश् च चन्दनैश् च सितेतरैः अश्वत्थैः सप्तपर्णैश् च आम्रैर् आम्रातकैस् तथा
With sarala, mucukunda, sandalwood both white and otherwise, aśvattha, saptaparṇa, mango, and wild mango trees.
तालैः पूगफलैश् चैव नारिकेरैः कपित्थकैः अन्यैश् च विविधैर् वृक्षैः सर्वतः समलंकृतम्
With palm, areca nut, coconut, wood apple, and other various trees, it is adorned on all sides.
क्षेत्रं तत्र रवेः पुण्यम् आस्ते जगति विश्रुतम् समन्ताद् योजनं साग्रं भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदम्
There is the sacred field of the Sun, renowned throughout the world, extending a yojana and a quarter in every direction, bestowing both enjoyment and liberation.
आस्ते तत्र स्वयं देवः सहस्रांशुर् दिवाकरः कोणादित्य इति ख्यातो भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदः
There dwells the god himself, the thousand-rayed Sun, known as Koṇāditya, granting the fruits of enjoyment and liberation.
माघे मासि सिते पक्षे सप्तम्यां संयतेन्द्रियः कृतोपवासो यत्रेत्य स्नात्वा तु मकरालये
In the month of Māgha, during the bright fortnight, on the seventh day, one who is disciplined in the senses, having fasted, comes there and bathes in the abode of Makara.
कृतशौचो विशुद्धात्मा स्मरन् देवं दिवाकरम् सागरे विधिवत् स्नात्वा शर्वर्यन्ते समाहितः
Having purified himself, with a cleansed mind, remembering the god Sun, bathing properly in the ocean at the end of the night, with concentration.
देवान् ऋषीन् मनुष्यांश् च पितॄन् संतर्प्य च द्विजाः उत्तीर्य वाससी धौते परिधाय सुनिर्मले
Having satisfied the gods, sages, humans, and ancestors, O twice-born, and after crossing over, having washed garments and put on clean, spotless clothes,
आचम्य प्रयतो भूत्वा तीरे तस्य महोदधेः उपविश्योदये काले प्राङ्मुखः सवितुस् तदा
Having sipped water, becoming pure in mind, at the shore of that great ocean, one should sit at sunrise, facing east, at that time of the Sun.
विलिख्य पद्मं मेधावी रक्तचन्दनवारिणा अष्टपत्त्रं केसराढ्यं वर्तुलं चोर्ध्वकर्णिकम्
The wise one should draw a lotus with red sandalwood water—eight-petaled, rich with filaments, round, and with an upright pericarp.
तिलतण्डुलतोयं च रक्तचन्दनसंयुतम् रक्तपुष्पं सदर्भं च प्रक्षिपेत् ताम्रभाजने
Sesame, rice, and water, mixed with red sandalwood, along with a red flower and sacred grass, should be placed in a copper vessel.
ताम्राभावे ऽर्कपत्त्रस्य पुटे कृत्वा तिलादिकम् पिधाय तन् मुनिश्रेष्ठाः पात्रं पात्रेण विन्यसेत्
If copper is unavailable, the sesame and other items should be placed in a leaf of the arka plant, and, covering it, O best of sages, one vessel should be set within another.
करन्यासाङ्गविन्यासं कृत्वाङ्गैर् हृदयादिभिः आत्मानं भास्करं ध्यात्वा सम्यक् श्रद्धासमन्वितः
Having performed the hand and limb gestures with the heart and other limbs, and meditating upon oneself as the Sun, one should be filled with proper faith.
मध्ये चाग्निदले धीमान् नैरृते श्वसने दले कामारिगोचरे चैव पुनर् मध्ये च पूजयेत्
In the center, on the petal of Fire, in the southwest on the petal of Wind, in the domain of the enemy of Desire, and again in the center, one should worship.
प्रभूतं विमलं सारम् आराध्यं परमं सुखम् संपूज्य पद्मम् आवाह्य गगनात् तत्र भास्करम्
Having worshipped the abundant, pure, essential, and supremely blissful, and having fully honored the lotus, one should invoke the Sun there from the sky.
कर्णिकोपरि संस्थाप्य ततो मुद्रां प्रदर्शयेत् कृत्वा स्नानादिकं सर्वं ध्यात्वा तं सुसमाहितः
Placing it upon the pericarp, then displaying the hand gesture, having completed all the bathing and other rites, one should meditate upon Him with full concentration.
सितपद्मोपरि रविं तेजोबिम्बे व्यवस्थितम् पिङ्गाक्षं द्विभुजं रक्तं पद्मपत्त्रारुणाम्बरम्
Upon a white lotus, the Sun is established as a radiant orb, tawny-eyed, two-armed, red, clothed in garments the color of lotus petals.
