तुम्बुरास् तु चराश् चैव यवनाः पवनैः सह अभया रुण्डिकेराश् च चर्चरा होत्रधर्तयः
The Tumburas, the Charas, the Yavanas, together with the Pavanas, the Abhayas, the Rundikeras, the Carcaras, and the Hotradhartayas.
एते जनपदाः सर्वे तत्र विन्ध्यनिवासिनः अतो देशान् प्रवक्ष्यामि पर्वताश्रयिणश् च ये
All these peoples reside in the Vindhya region; now I shall describe the lands inhabited by those dwelling in the mountains.
नीहारास् तुषमार्गाश् च कुरवस् तुङ्गणाः खसाः कर्णप्रावरणाश् चैव ऊर्णा दर्घाः सकुन्तकाः
The Niharas, the Tushamargas, the Kuravas, the Tunganas, the Khasas, the Karnapravaranas, the Urnas, the Darghas, and the Sakuntakas.
चित्रमार्गा मालवाश् च किरातास् तोमरैः सह कृतत्रेतादिकश् चात्र चतुर्युगकृतो विधिः
The Citra-margas, the Malavas, the Kiratas together with the Tomaras; here also is the ordinance established for the four ages, beginning with Krita and Treta.
एवं तु भारतं वर्षं नवसंस्थानसंस्थितम् दक्षिणे परतो यस्य पूर्वे चैव महोदधिः
Thus, the land of Bhārata is arranged in nine divisions, with the great ocean to its south, east, and west.
हिमवान् उत्तरेणास्य कार्मुकस्य यथा गुणः तद् एतद् भारतं वर्षं सर्वबीजं द्विजोत्तमाः
To its north stands the Himalaya, like a bow in form; this Bhārata land, O best of twice-born, is the seed of all.
ब्रह्मत्वम् अमरेशत्वं देवत्वं मरुतां तथा मृगयक्षाप्सरोयोनिं तद्वत् सर्पसरीसृपाः
Brahmahood, sovereignty among immortals, divinity, the birth of Maruts, hunters, Yakshas, Apsaras, and likewise serpents and reptiles—
स्थावराणां च सर्वेषां मितो विप्राः शुभाशुभैः प्रयान्ति कर्मभूर् विप्रा नान्या लोकेषु विद्यते
And all stationary beings, O sages, depart from here, according to their deeds, to auspicious or inauspicious realms; there is no other such world.
देवानाम् अपि भो विप्राः सदैवैष मनोरथः अपि मानुष्यम् आप्स्यामो देवत्वात् प्रच्युताः क्षितौ
Even the gods, O sages, always cherish this wish: 'May we attain human birth, having fallen from divinity to earth.'
मनुष्यः कुरुते यत् तु तन् न शक्यं सुरासुरैः तत्कर्मनिगडग्रस्तैस् तत्कर्मक्षपणोन्मुखैः
Whatever action a human performs cannot be accomplished by gods or demons, bound by the fetters of karma and eager to exhaust their deeds.
न भारतसमं वर्षं पृथिव्याम् अस्ति भो द्विजाः यत्र विप्रादयो वर्णाः प्राप्नुवन्त्य् अभिवाञ्छितम्
There is no land equal to Bhārata on earth, O twice-born, where the classes led by sages attain their desired goals.
धन्यास् ते भारते वर्षे जायन्ते ये नरोत्तमाः धर्मार्थकाममोक्षाणां प्राप्नुवन्ति महाफलम्
Blessed are those noble men born in the land of Bhārata, who obtain the great fruits of righteousness, wealth, pleasure, and liberation.
प्राप्यते यत्र तपसः फलं परमदुर्लभम् सर्वदानफलं चैव सर्वयज्ञफलं तथा
Here is attained the fruit of austerity, exceedingly rare, as well as the fruit of all gifts and all sacrifices.
तीर्थयात्राफलं चैव गुरुसेवाफलं तथा देवताराधनफलं स्वाध्यायस्य फलं द्विजाः
Here too is gained the fruit of pilgrimage, the fruit of serving the teacher, the fruit of worshipping deities, and the fruit of study, O sages.
यत्र देवाः सदा हृष्टा जन्म वाञ्छन्ति शोभनम् नानाव्रतफलं चैव नानाशास्त्रफलं तथा
Here the gods are always delighted and desire auspicious birth; also, the fruits of various vows and the fruits of various scriptures.
अहिंसादिफलं सम्यक् फलं सर्वाभिवाञ्छितम् ब्रह्मचर्यफलं चैव गार्हस्थ्येन च यत् फलम्
The fruit of nonviolence and similar virtues, the desired fruit of all, the fruit of celibacy, and the fruit gained through household life—
यत् फलं वनवासेन संन्यासेन च यत् फलम् इष्टापूर्तफलं चैव तथान्यच् छुभकर्मणाम्
The fruit gained by forest-dwelling, the fruit of renunciation, the fruit of acts of worship and charity, and other auspicious deeds—
प्राप्यते भारते वर्षे न चान्यत्र द्विजोत्तमाः कः शक्नोति गुणान् वक्तुं भारतस्याखिलान् द्विजाः
All these are attained in the land of Bhārata, not elsewhere, O best of sages; who can describe all the virtues of Bhārata, O sages?
एवं सम्यङ् मया प्रोक्तं भारतं वर्षम् उत्तमम् सर्वपापहरं पुण्यं धन्यं बुद्धिविवर्धनम्
Thus I have properly spoken of the supreme land of Bhārata, which removes all sin, is holy, blessed, and increases wisdom.
य इदं शृणुयान् नित्यं पठेद् वा नियतेन्द्रियः सर्वपापैर् विनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति
Whoever hears this daily or recites it with controlled senses, freed from all sins, attains the realm of Viṣṇu.
तत्रास्ते भारते वर्षे दक्षिणोदधिसंस्थितः ओण्ड्रदेश इति ख्यातः स्वर्गमोक्षप्रदायकः
There, in the land of Bhārata, situated by the southern ocean, is the region known as Oṇḍra, which grants heaven and liberation.
समुद्राद् उत्तरं तावद् यावद् विरजमण्डलम् देशो ऽसौ पुण्यशीलानां गुणैः सर्वैर् अलंकृतः
From the ocean northward up to the Viraja circle, that region is adorned with all virtues and is the abode of the righteous.
तत्र देशप्रसूता ये ब्राह्मणाः संयतेन्द्रियाः तपःस्वाध्यायनिरता वन्द्याः पूज्याश् च ते सदा
There, the Brahmins born in that land, who are disciplined in their senses and devoted to austerity and study, are always worthy of respect and worship.
श्राद्धे दाने विवाहे च यज्ञे वाचार्यकर्मणि प्रशस्ताः सर्वकार्येषु तत्रदेशोद्भवा द्विजाः
In rites for ancestors, in giving, in marriage, in sacrifice, and in teaching, the twice-born originating from that region are esteemed in all undertakings.
षट्कर्मनिरतास् तत्र ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः इतिहासविदश् चैव पुराणार्थविशारदाः
There, the Brahmins are engaged in the six duties, accomplished in the Vedas, knowledgeable in history, and skilled in the meanings of the Purāṇas.
सर्वशास्त्रार्थकुशला यज्वानो वीतमत्सराः अग्निहोत्ररताः केचित् केचित् स्मार्ताग्नितत्पराः
Expert in the meanings of all scriptures, performers of sacrifice, free from envy, some are devoted to Agnihotra, others are intent upon the ritual fires prescribed by tradition.
पुत्रदारधनैर् युक्ता दातारः सत्यवादिनः निवसन्त्य् उत्कले पुण्ये यज्ञोत्सवविभूषिते
Endowed with sons, wives, and wealth, generous and truthful in speech, they dwell in Utkala, the sacred land adorned with festivals of sacrifice.
इतरे ऽपि त्रयो वर्णाः क्षत्रियाद्याः सुसंयताः स्वकर्मनिरताः शान्तास् तत्र तिष्ठन्ति धार्मिकाः
The other three classes—beginning with the Kṣatriyas—are also well-disciplined, devoted to their own duties, peaceful, and righteous, residing there.
कोणादित्य इति ख्यातस् तस्मिन् देशे व्यवस्थितः यं दृष्ट्वा भास्करं मर्त्यः सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
In that region stands the renowned Koṇāditya; seeing that Sun, a mortal is freed from all sins.
श्रोतुम् इच्छाम तद् ब्रूहि क्षेत्रं सूर्यस्य सांप्रतम् तस्मिन् देशे सुरश्रेष्ठ यत्रास्ते स दिवाकरः
We wish to hear, so tell us now, O best of gods, about the field of the Sun in that region where the Sun resides.
