प्रावृट्कालवहाः सन्ति सदाकालवहाश् च याः मत्स्या मुकुटकुल्याश् च कुन्तलाः काशिकोशलाः
There are rivers flowing in the rainy season and those flowing throughout the year; Matsyā, Mukuṭakulyā, Kuntalā, Kāśikośalā.
अन्ध्रकाश् च कलिङ्गाश् च शमकाश् च वृकैः सह मध्यदेशा जनपदाः प्रायशो ऽमी प्रकीर्तिताः
Andhras, Kaliṅgas, Śamakas together with Vṛkas, and the peoples of the central region are mostly enumerated here.
सह्यस्य चोत्तरे यस् तु यत्र गोदावरी नदी पृथिव्याम् अपि कृत्स्नायां स प्रदेशो मनोरमः
On the northern side of Sahya, where the Godāvarī river flows, that region upon the entire earth is delightful.
गोवर्धनपुरं रम्यं भार्गवस्य महात्मनः वाहीकराटधानाश् च सुतीराः कालतोयदाः
Govardhana city, charming and belonging to the great-souled Bhārgava; Vāhīkarāṭadhānas, Sutīrās, and Kālatoyadās.
अपरान्ताश् च शूद्राश् च वाह्लिकाश् च सकेरलाः गान्धारा यवनाश् चैव सिन्धुसौवीरमद्रकाः
Aparāntas, Śūdras, Vāhlikas with Keralas, Gāndhāras, Yavanas, Sindhus, Sauvīras, and Madrakas.
शतद्रुहाः कलिङ्गाश् च पारदा हारभूषिकाः माठराश् चैव कनकाः कैकेया दम्भमालिकाः
Śatadruhas, Kaliṅgas, Pāradas, Hārabhūṣikas, Māṭharas, Kanakas, Kaikeyas, and Dambhamālikas.
क्षत्रियोपमदेशाश् च वैश्यशूद्रकुलानि च काम्बोजाश् चैव विप्रेन्द्रा बर्बराश् च सलौकिकाः
The regions resembling those of Kshatriyas, as well as the families of Vaishyas and Shudras, the Kambojas, O best of Brahmins, and also the Barbaras together with the common folk.
वीराश् चैव तुषाराश् च पह्लवाधायता नराः आत्रेयाश् च भरद्वाजाः पुष्कलाश् च दशेरकाः
The Viras, the Tusharas, men descended from the Pahlavas, the Atreyas, the Bharadvajas, the Pushkalas, and the Dasherakas.
लम्पकाः शुनशोकाश् च कुलिका जाङ्गलैः सह औषध्यश् चलचन्द्रा च किरातानां च जातयः
The Lampakas, the Shunashokas, the Kulikas along with the Jangalas, the Ushadhyas, the Calacandras, and the tribes of the Kiratas.
तोमरा हंसमार्गाश् च काश्मीराः करुणास् तथा शूलिकाः कुहकाश् चैव मागधाश् च तथैव च
The Tomaras, the Hamsamargas, the Kashmiris, the Karunas, the Shulikas, the Kuhakas, and likewise the Magadhas.
एते देशा उदीच्यास् तु प्राच्यान् देशान् निबोधत अन्धा वामङ्कुराकाश् च वल्लकाश् च मखान्तकाः
These are the northern regions; now listen to the eastern lands: the Andhas, the Vamankuras, the Vallakas, and the Makhantakas.
तथापरे ऽङ्गा वङ्गाश् च मलदा मालवर्तिकाः भद्रतुङ्गाः प्रतिजया भार्याङ्गाश् चापमर्दकाः
Also, the Angas, the Vangas, the Maladas, the Malavartikas, the Bhadratungas, the Pratijayas, the Bharyangas, and the Apamardakas.
प्राग्ज्योतिषाश् च मद्राश् च विदेहास् ताम्रलिप्तकाः मल्ला मगधका नन्दाः प्राच्या जनपदास् तथा
The Pragjyotishas, the Madras, the Videhas, the Tamraliptakas, the Mallas, the Magadhas, the Nandas, and likewise the peoples of the east.
अथापरे जनपदा दक्षिणापथवासिनः पूर्णाश् च केवलाश् चैव गोलाङ्गूलास् तथैव च
Next, other peoples dwelling in the southern regions: the Purnas, the Kevalas, and also the Golangulas.
ऋषिका मुषिकाश् चैव कुमारा रामठाः शकाः महाराष्ट्रा माहिषकाः कलिङ्गाश् चैव सर्वशः
The Rshikas, the Mushikas, the Kumaras, the Ramathas, the Shakas, the Maharashtras, the Mahishakas, and the Kalingas in their entirety.
आभीराः सह वैशिक्या अटव्याः सरवाश् च ये पुलिन्दाश् चैव मौलेया वैदर्भा दण्डकैः सह
The Abhiras together with the Vaishikyas, all the forest-dwellers, the Pulindas, the Mauleyas, the Vaidarbhas, along with the Dandakas.
पौलिका मौलिकाश् चैव अश्मका भोजवर्धनाः कौलिकाः कुन्तलाश् चैव दम्भका नीलकालकाः
The Paulikas, the Maulikas, the Ashmakas, the Bhojavardhanas, the Kaulikas, the Kuntalas, the Dambhakas, and the Nilakalakas.
दाक्षिणात्यास् त्व् अमी देशा अपरान्तान् निबोधत शूर्पारकाः कालिधना लोलास् तालकटैः सह
These are the southern regions; now listen to the western lands: the Shurparakas, the Kalidhanas, the Lolas, together with the Talakatais.
इत्य् एते ह्य् अपरान्ताश् च शृणुध्वं विन्ध्यवासिनः मलजाः कर्कशाश् चैव मेलकाश् चोलकैः सह
Thus these are the western peoples; hear also those dwelling in the Vindhya: the Malajas, the Karkashas, the Melakas, together with the Colakas.
उत्तमार्णा दशार्णाश् च भोजाः किष्किन्धकैः सह तोषलाः कोशलाश् चैव त्रैपुरा वैदिशास् तथा
The Uttamarnas, the Dasharnas, the Bhojas, together with the Kishkindhakas, the Toshalas, the Kosalas, the Traipuras, and the Vaidishas as well.
तुम्बुरास् तु चराश् चैव यवनाः पवनैः सह अभया रुण्डिकेराश् च चर्चरा होत्रधर्तयः
The Tumburas, the Charas, the Yavanas, together with the Pavanas, the Abhayas, the Rundikeras, the Carcaras, and the Hotradhartayas.
एते जनपदाः सर्वे तत्र विन्ध्यनिवासिनः अतो देशान् प्रवक्ष्यामि पर्वताश्रयिणश् च ये
All these peoples reside in the Vindhya region; now I shall describe the lands inhabited by those dwelling in the mountains.
नीहारास् तुषमार्गाश् च कुरवस् तुङ्गणाः खसाः कर्णप्रावरणाश् चैव ऊर्णा दर्घाः सकुन्तकाः
The Niharas, the Tushamargas, the Kuravas, the Tunganas, the Khasas, the Karnapravaranas, the Urnas, the Darghas, and the Sakuntakas.
चित्रमार्गा मालवाश् च किरातास् तोमरैः सह कृतत्रेतादिकश् चात्र चतुर्युगकृतो विधिः
The Citra-margas, the Malavas, the Kiratas together with the Tomaras; here also is the ordinance established for the four ages, beginning with Krita and Treta.
एवं तु भारतं वर्षं नवसंस्थानसंस्थितम् दक्षिणे परतो यस्य पूर्वे चैव महोदधिः
Thus, the land of Bhārata is arranged in nine divisions, with the great ocean to its south, east, and west.
हिमवान् उत्तरेणास्य कार्मुकस्य यथा गुणः तद् एतद् भारतं वर्षं सर्वबीजं द्विजोत्तमाः
To its north stands the Himalaya, like a bow in form; this Bhārata land, O best of twice-born, is the seed of all.
ब्रह्मत्वम् अमरेशत्वं देवत्वं मरुतां तथा मृगयक्षाप्सरोयोनिं तद्वत् सर्पसरीसृपाः
Brahmahood, sovereignty among immortals, divinity, the birth of Maruts, hunters, Yakshas, Apsaras, and likewise serpents and reptiles—
स्थावराणां च सर्वेषां मितो विप्राः शुभाशुभैः प्रयान्ति कर्मभूर् विप्रा नान्या लोकेषु विद्यते
And all stationary beings, O sages, depart from here, according to their deeds, to auspicious or inauspicious realms; there is no other such world.
देवानाम् अपि भो विप्राः सदैवैष मनोरथः अपि मानुष्यम् आप्स्यामो देवत्वात् प्रच्युताः क्षितौ
Even the gods, O sages, always cherish this wish: 'May we attain human birth, having fallen from divinity to earth.'
मनुष्यः कुरुते यत् तु तन् न शक्यं सुरासुरैः तत्कर्मनिगडग्रस्तैस् तत्कर्मक्षपणोन्मुखैः
Whatever action a human performs cannot be accomplished by gods or demons, bound by the fetters of karma and eager to exhaust their deeds.
