ततः स्वर्गश् च मोक्षश् च मध्यमं तच् च गम्यते न खल्व् अन्यत्र मर्त्यानां भूमौ कर्म विधीयते
Therefore, heaven and liberation are attained through this middle realm; nowhere else on earth are actions prescribed for mortals.
तस्माद् विस्तरतो ब्रह्मन्न् अस्माकं भारतं वद यदि ते ऽस्ति दयास्मासु यथावस्थितिर् एव च
Therefore, O Brahman, describe our land of Bhārata in detail, if you have compassion for us, and as it truly exists.
तस्माद् वर्षम् इदं नाथ ये वास्मिन् वर्षपर्वताः भेदाश् च तस्य वर्षस्य ब्रूहि सर्वान् अशेषतः
Therefore, O Lord, tell of this land, its mountain ranges, and all the divisions of this region, without omission.
शृणुध्वं भारतं वर्षं नवभेदेन भो द्विजाः समुद्रान्तरिता ज्ञेयास् ते समाश् च परस्परम्
Hear now of the land of Bhārata, O twice-born, divided into nine parts, separated by oceans, and mutually connected.
इन्द्रद्वीपः कशेरुश् च ताम्रवर्णो गभस्तिमान् नागद्वीपस् तथा सौम्यो गान्धर्वो वारुणस् तथा
Indradvīpa, Kaśeru, Tāmravarṇa, Gabhastimān, Nāgadvīpa, Saumya, Gāndharva, Vāruṇa—these are named.
अयं तु नवमस् तेषां द्वीपः सागरसंवृतः योजनानां सहस्रं वै द्वीपो ऽयं दक्षिणोत्तरः
This, the ninth among them, is an island surrounded by the ocean, stretching a thousand yojanas from south to north.
पूर्वे किराता यस्यासन् पश्चिमे यवनास् तथा ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश् चान्ते स्थिता द्विजाः
To its east were the Kirātas, to the west the Yavanas; at the ends dwell Brahmins, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras, O twice-born.
इज्यायुद्धवणिज्याद्यैः कर्मभिः कृतपावनाः तेषां संव्यवहारश् च एभिः कर्मभिर् इष्यते
Purified by acts such as worship, battle, and trade, their mutual dealings are governed by these actions.
स्वर्गापवर्गहेतुश् च पुण्यं पापं च वै तथा महेन्द्रो मलयः सह्यः शुक्तिमान् ऋक्षपर्वतः
Heaven and liberation arise from virtue and sin; Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Śuktimān, and Ṛkṣa are the mountains.
विन्ध्यश् च पारियात्रश् च सप्तैवात्र कुलाचलाः तेषां सहस्रशश् चान्ये भूधरा ये समीपगाः
Vindhya and Pāriyātra—these are the seven principal mountain ranges here, and thousands of other mountains lie nearby.
विस्तारोच्छ्रयिणो रम्या विपुलाश् चित्रसानवः कोलाहलः स वैभ्राजो मन्दरो दर्दलाचलः
Wide, lofty, delightful, and vast, with varied peaks: Kolāhala, Vaibhrāja, Mandara, and Dardalācala.
वातंधयो वैद्युतश् च मैनाकः सुरसस् तथा तुङ्गप्रस्थो नागगिरिर् गोधनः पाण्डराचलः
Vātaṃdhaya, Vaidyuta, Maināka, Surasa, Tuṅgaprastha, Nāgagiri, Godhana, and Pāṇḍarācala.
पुष्पगिरिर् वैजयन्तो रैवतो ऽर्बुद एव च ऋष्यमूकः स गोमन्थः कृतशैलः कृताचलः
Puṣpagiri, Vaijayanta, Raivata, Arbuda, Ṛṣyamūka, Gomantha, Kṛtaśaila, and Kṛtācala.
श्रीपार्वतश् चकोरश् च शतशो ऽन्ये च पर्वताः तैर् विमिश्रा जनपदा म्लेच्छाद्याश् चैव भागशः
Śrīparvata, Cakora, and hundreds of other mountains; among them are mixed peoples and various groups such as the Mlecchas.
तैः पीयन्ते सरिच्छ्रेष्ठास् ता बुध्यध्वं द्विजोत्तमाः गङ्गा सरस्वती सिन्धुश् चन्द्रभागा तथापरा
By these mountains flow the greatest rivers—know them, O best of twice-born: Gaṅgā, Sarasvatī, Sindhu, and another called Candrabhāgā.
यमुना शतद्रुर् विपाशा वितस्तैरावती कुहूः गोमती धूतपापा च बाहुदा च दृषद्वती
Yamunā, Śatadrū, Vipāśā, Vitastā, Irāvatī, Kuhū, Gomatī, Dhūtapāpā, Bāhudā, and Dṛṣadvatī.
विपाशा देविका चक्षुर् निष्ठीवा गण्डकी तथा कौशिकी चापगा चैव हिमवत्पादनिःसृताः
Vipāśā, Devikā, Cakṣur, Niṣṭhīvā, Gaṇḍakī, Kauśikī, and Āpagā—all these arise from the foot of Himavat.
देवस्मृतिर् देववती वातघ्नी सिन्धुर् एव च वेण्या तु चन्दना चैव सदानीरा मही तथा
Devamṛti, Devavatī, Vātaghnī, Sindhu, Veṇyā, Candanā, Sadānīrā, and Mahī as well.
चर्मण्वती वृषी चैव विदिशा वेदवत्य् अपि सिप्रा ह्य् अवन्ती च तथा पारियात्रानुगाः स्मृताः
Carmaṇvatī, Vṛṣī, Vidiśā, Vedavatī, Siprā, Avantī, and those rivers flowing along the Pāriyātra mountains are remembered.
शोणा महानदी चैव नर्मदा सुरथा क्रिया मन्दाकिनी दशार्णा च चित्रकूटा तथापरा
Śoṇā, Mahānadī, Narmadā, Surathā, Kriyā, Mandākinī, Daśārṇā, and Citrakūṭā are other rivers.
चित्रोत्पला वेत्रवती करमोदा पिशाचिका तथान्यातिलघुश्रोणी विपाप्मा शैवला नदी
Citrotpalā, Vetravatī, Karamodā, Piśācikā, Anyātilaghuśroṇī, Vipāpmā, and Śaivalā are rivers as well.
सधेरुजा शक्तिमती शकुनी त्रिदिवा क्रमुः ऋक्षपादप्रसूता वै तथान्या वेगवाहिनी
Sadherujā, Śaktimatī, Śakunī, Tridivā, Kramuḥ, and those born from the roots of ṛkṣa trees, along with other swift-flowing rivers.
सिप्रा पयोष्णी निर्विन्ध्या तापी चैव सरिद्वरा वेणा वैतरणी चैव सिनीवाली कुमुद्वती
Siprā, Payoṣṇī, Nirvindhyā, Tāpi, Veṇā, Vaitaraṇī, Sinīvālī, and Kumudvatī are excellent rivers.
तोया चैव महागौरी दुर्गा चान्तःशिला तथा विन्ध्यपादप्रसूतास् ता नद्यः पुण्यजलाः शुभाः
Toyā, Mahāgaurī, Durgā, Antaḥśilā, and those rivers born from the roots of the Vindhya mountains, all possessing holy and auspicious waters.
गोदावरी भीमरथी कृष्णवेणा तथापगा तुङ्गभद्रा सुप्रयोगा तथान्या पापनाशिनी
Godāvarī, Bhīmarathī, Kṛṣṇaveṇā, Tuṅgabhadrā, Suprayogā, and other rivers, including Pāpanāśinī.
सह्यपादविनिष्क्रान्ता इत्य् एताः सरितां वराः कृतमाला ताम्रपर्णी पुष्यजा प्रत्यलावती
Those rivers emerging from the base of the Sahya mountains, such as Kṛtamālā, Tāmraparṇī, Puṣyajā, and Pratyalāvatī, are the best among rivers.
मलयाद्रिसमुद्भूताः पुण्याः शीतजलास् त्व् इमाः पितृसोमर्षिकुल्या च वञ्जुला त्रिदिवा च या
These holy rivers with cool waters arise from the Malayā mountains: Pitṛsomarṣikulyā, Vañjulā, and Tridivā.
लाङ्गुलिनी वंशकरा महेन्द्रप्रभवाः स्मृताः सुविकाला कुमारी च मनूगा मन्दगामिनी
Lāṅgulinī, Vaṃśakarā, those originating from Mahendra, Suvikālā, Kumārī, Manūgā, and Mandagāminī are remembered.
क्षयापलासिनी चैव शुक्तिमत्प्रभवाः स्मृताः सर्वाः पुण्याः सरस्वत्यः सर्वा गङ्गाः समुद्रगाः
Kṣayāpalāsinī and those arising from Śuktimat, all are holy Sarasvatīs, all are Gaṅgās flowing to the ocean.
विश्वस्य मातरः सर्वाः सर्वाः पापहराः स्मृताः अन्याः सहस्रशः प्रोक्ताः क्षुद्रनद्यो द्विजोत्तमाः
All are mothers of the world, all are remembered as destroyers of sin; countless other small rivers are mentioned, O best of twice-born.
