सुवर्णस्योदपानं च श्वेततीर्थह्रदं तथा कुण्डं घर्घरिकायाश् च श्यामकूपं च चन्द्रिका
The golden well, the Svetatirtha lake, the pool of Ghargharika, and the dark well of Candrika—
श्मशानस्तम्भकूपं च विनायकह्रदं तथा कूपं सिन्धूद्भवं चैव पुण्यं ब्रह्मसरं तथा
The cremation ground pillar well, the Vinayaka lake, the well born of the Sindhu, and again the holy Brahmasara—
रुद्रावासं तथा तीर्थं नागतीर्थं पुलोमकम् भक्तह्रदं क्षीरसरः प्रेताधारं कुमारकम्
The abode of Rudra, the Nagatirtha, Pulomaka, the devotee's lake, the milk lake, the abode of the departed, and Kumāraka—
ब्रह्मावर्तं कुशावर्तं दधिकर्णोदपानकम् शृङ्गतीर्थं महातीर्थं तीर्थश्रेष्ठा महानदी
Brahmavarta, Kushavarta, the Dadhikarṇa well, Shringa tirtha, the great tirtha, the foremost tirthas, and the great river—
दिव्यं ब्रह्मसरं पुण्यं गयाशीर्षाक्षयं वटम् दक्षिणं चोत्तरं चैव गोमयं रूपशीतिकम्
The divine, holy Brahmasara, the imperishable banyan at the head of Gaya, the southern and northern Gomaya, and Rupashitika—
कपिलाह्रदं गृध्रवटं सावित्रीह्रदम् एव च प्रभासनं सीतवनं योनिद्वारं च धेनुकम्
The Kapila lake, the vulture banyan, the Savitri lake, Prabhasana, the forest of Sita, the gateway of the womb, and Dhenuka—
धन्यकं कोकिलाख्यं च मतङ्गह्रदम् एव च पितृकूपं रुद्रतीर्थं शक्रतीर्थं सुमालिनम्
Dhanyaka, the place called Kokila, the Matanga lake, the ancestral well, Rudra tirtha, Indra tirtha, and Sumalina—
ब्रह्मस्थानं सप्तकुण्डं मणिरत्नह्रदं तथा कौशिक्यं भरतं चैव तीर्थं ज्येष्ठालिका तथा
The seat of Brahma, the seven pools, the jewel-lake, Kaushiki, Bharata, the tirtha, and likewise Jyeshthalika—
विश्वेश्वरं कल्पसरः कन्यासंवेत्यम् एव च निश्चीवा प्रभवश् चैव वसिष्ठाश्रमम् एव च
Vishveshvara, Kalpasara, the Kanyasamvetya, Nishchiva, Prabhava, and the hermitage of Vasistha—
देवकूटं च कूपं च वसिष्ठाश्रमम् एव च वीराश्रमं ब्रह्मसरो ब्रह्मवीरावकापिली
Devakuta and its well, the hermitage of Vasistha, the hermitage of heroes, Brahmasara, Brahmavira, and Avakapili—
कुमारधारा श्रीधारा गौरीशिखरम् एव च शुनः कुण्डो ऽथ तीर्थं च नन्दितीर्थं तथैव च
The stream of Kumara, the stream of Shri, the peak of Gauri, the pool of Shunah, the tirtha, and likewise the Nandi tirtha—
कुमारवासं श्रीवासम् और्वीशीतार्थम् एव च कुम्भकर्णह्रदं चैव कौशिकीह्रदम् एव च
The abode of Kumara, the abode of Shri, the earth-cooling tirtha, the Kumbhakarna lake, and the Kaushiki lake—
धर्मतीर्थं कामतीर्थं तीर्थम् उद्दालकं तथा संध्यातीर्थं कारतोयं कपिलं लोहितार्णवम्
The Dharma tirtha, Kama tirtha, the tirtha of Uddalaka, the Sandhya tirtha, Karatoya, Kapila, and the Red Ocean—
शोणोद्भवं वंशगुल्मम् ऋषभं कलतीर्थकम् पुण्यावतीह्रदं तीर्थं तीर्थं बदरिकाश्रमम्
The source of the Shona, the bamboo thicket, Rishabha, the Kala tirtha, the lake of Punyavati, the tirtha, and the hermitage of Badarika—
रामतीर्थं पितृवनं विरजातीर्थम् एव च मार्कण्डेयवनं चैव कृष्णतीर्थं तथा वटम्
The Rama tirtha, the forest of ancestors, the Viraja tirtha, the forest of Markandeya, the Krishna tirtha, and the banyan—
रोहिणीकूपप्रवरम् इन्द्रद्युम्नसरं च यत् सानुगर्तं समाहेन्द्रं श्रीतीर्थं श्रीनदं तथा
The foremost well of Rohini, the lake of Indradyumna, the Sanu garta, the Samahendra, the Shri tirtha, and likewise the Shri river—
इषुतीर्थं वार्षभं च कावेरीह्रदम् एव च कन्यातीर्थं च गोकर्णं गायत्रीस्थानम् एव च
Iṣutīrtha, Vārṣabha, the pool of the Kaveri, Kanyātīrtha, Gokarṇa, and the place of the Gāyatrī—
बदरीह्रदम् अन्यच् च मध्यस्थानं विकर्णकम् जातीह्रदं देवकूपं कुशप्रवणम् एव च
The pool of Badarī, another sacred pool, the central place called Vikarṇaka, the pool of Jāti, Devakūpa, and the slope of Kuśa grass—
सर्वदेवव्रतं चैव कन्याश्रमह्रदं तथा तथान्यद् वालखिल्यानां सपूर्वाणां तथापरम्
The vow of all the gods, the pool at Kanyāśrama, and likewise another place of the Vālakhilyas, both former and later—
तथान्यच् च महर्षीणाम् अखण्डितह्रदं तथा तीर्थेष्व् एतेषु विधिवत् सम्यक् श्रद्धासमन्वितः
And another undivided pool of the great sages; in these holy places, according to proper rule, with full faith—
स्नानं करोति यो मर्त्यः सोपवासो जितेन्द्रियः देवान् ऋषीन् मनुष्यांश् च पितॄन् संतर्प्य च क्रमात्
Whoever, being human, bathes there with fasting and self-control, duly satisfies the gods, seers, humans, and ancestors in order—
अभ्यर्च्य देवतास् तत्र स्थित्वा च रजनीत्रयम् पृथक् पृथक् फलं तेषु प्रतितीर्थेषु भो द्विजाः
Having worshipped the deities there, and remained for three nights, receives separately the fruit at each of these holy places, O twice-born ones.
प्राप्नोति हयमेधस्य नरो नास्त्य् अत्र संशयः यस् त्व् इदं शृणुयान् नित्यं तीर्थमाहात्म्यम् उत्तमम् पठेच् च श्रावयेद् वापि सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
A man attains the fruit of a horse sacrifice—there is no doubt of this. Whoever hears daily this supreme glory of the holy places, or recites or causes it to be heard, is freed from all sins.
पृथिव्याम् उत्तमां भूमिं धर्मकामार्थमोक्षदाम् तीर्थानाम् उत्तमं तीर्थं ब्रूहि नो वदतां वर
On earth, tell us of the most excellent land, which bestows virtue, desire, wealth, and liberation; O best of speakers, declare to us the supreme holy place among holy places.
इमं प्रश्नं मम गुरुं पप्रच्छुर् मुनयः पुरा तम् अहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि यत् पृच्छध्वं द्विजोत्तमाः
Long ago, the sages asked this question of my teacher; I will now explain to you, O best of the twice-born, what you ask.
स्वाश्रमे सुमहापुण्ये नानापुष्पोपशोभिते नानाद्रुमलताकीर्णे नानामृगगणैर् युते
In his own hermitage, supremely holy, adorned with many flowers, filled with various trees and creepers, and inhabited by many kinds of animals—
पुंनागैः कर्णिकारैश् च सरलैर् देवदारुभिः शालैस् तालैस् तमालैश् च पनसैर् धवखादिरैः
With puṃnāga, karṇikāra, sarala, devadāru, śāla, tāla, tamāla, panas, dhava, and khādira trees—
पाटलाशोकबकुलैः करवीरैः सचम्पकैः अन्यैश् च विविधैर् वृक्षैर् नानापुष्पोपशोभितैः
With pāṭala, aśoka, bakula, karavīra, and campaka trees, and many other kinds of trees adorned with various flowers—
कुरुक्षेत्रे समासीनं व्यासं मतिमतां वरम् महाभारतकर्तारं सर्वशास्त्रविशारदम्
In Kurukṣetra sat Vyāsa, the foremost of the wise, the composer of the Mahābhārata, expert in all the scriptures—
अध्यात्मनिष्ठं सर्वज्ञं सर्वभूतहिते रतम् पुराणागमवक्तारं वेदवेदाङ्गपारगम्
Firm in spiritual discipline, all-knowing, devoted to the welfare of all beings, speaker of the Purāṇas and Āgamas, master of the Vedas and their branches—
