Both the island and the ocean are equal, and the next is twice their size; the waters in all the oceans are always equal.
There is never any deficiency or excess among them, just as water in a pot does not overflow from contact with fire.
In the waxing and waning of the moon, O best of sages, the waters in the ocean increase and decrease, neither exceeding nor falling short.
At the moon’s rising and setting, during the bright and dark fortnights, the measure is one hundred and fifteen finger-breadths.
The increase and decrease of the oceanic waters are observed, O best of twice-born; in the Lotus Island, food appears there of its own accord.
The people there always partake of six-tasted food, O Brahmins, and around the sweet water, the existence of the world is seen.
Beyond that is the golden land, twice as wide, devoid of all living beings; then comes the Lokāloka mountain, stretching ten thousand yojanas.
Its height is likewise so many thousands, and then, enveloping that mountain on all sides, darkness is established.
And that darkness is surrounded on all sides by the shell of the cosmic egg; this earth, O best of twice-born, is fifty crores in extent.
Together with the shell of the cosmic egg, with its continents and mountains, this is the earth, the supporter and creator, endowed with all qualities of beings, the foundation of all worlds, O best of twice-born.
Thus the expanse of the earth has been described, O best of sages; now its height, which is seventy thousand, will also be told.
Each of the nether regions, O best of sages, is ten thousand in measure: Atala, Vitala, Nitala, Sutala as well.
Talātala, Rasātala, and Pātāla as the seventh; black, white, red, yellow, gravelly, rocky, and golden are the soils there.
There, O foremost of Brahmins, are lands adorned with splendid palaces, and in them dwell hundreds of races of Dānavas and Daiteyas.
And the kin of the great-bodied serpents, O best of twice-born, the nether worlds are said by Nārada to be more delightful even than heaven.
He spoke in the midst of the dwellers of heaven: 'Having gone from the nether worlds to heaven, one finds there radiant, delightful jewels.'
And the ornaments of the serpents adorn Pātāla; by whom can that realm be equaled, adorned here and there by the daughters of Daityas and Dānavas?
In Pātāla, who would not find delight, even one who is liberated? There, the rays of the sun and moon give light but do not cause heat.
Nor does the moon bring cold at night, but only illumination; and there, intoxicated serpents enjoy abundant food and drink.
There, even when time passes, it is not perceived by the Dānavas and others; there are delightful forests, rivers, lakes, and lotus-ponds.
The delightful calls of male cuckoos and other birds, the most charming ornaments and garments, and exquisite fragrances and ointments—
The constant sounds of the vīṇā, flute, and mṛdaṅga, O twice-born, and many other pleasing things—these are enjoyed by the fortunate among the Dānavas.
They are enjoyed by Daityas and serpents, those who dwell in the various regions of the netherworlds; and below the netherworlds abides the dark form of Viṣṇu.
The Daityas and Dānavas are unable to describe the qualities of him called Śeṣa, who is known as Ananta, worshipped by Siddhas, gods, and divine sages.
He appears with a thousand heads, adorned with the auspicious svastika and lotus, and with thousands of jewels on his hoods, he illumines all directions.
For the welfare of the world, he renders all the Asuras powerless; his eyes are rolling from intoxication, and he always wears a single earring.
He shines, crowned and garlanded, like a radiant white mountain with fire; clad in blue, swollen with pride, and adorned with a splendid white hood.
He is like the supreme Kailāsa mountain, with waterfalls and clouds; his hand holds a plough and bears the excellent mace.
He is worshipped by his own radiance and by the form of Varuṇī; at the end of the age, from his mouths, blazing flames of poison arise.
Rudra, in the form of Saṃkarṣaṇa, emerges and devours the three worlds; he bears the entire earth, raised up like a peak.
