वर्षाचला मुनिश्रेष्ठास् तेषां नामानि भो द्विजाः क्रौञ्चश् च वामनश् चैव तृतीयश् चान्धकारकः
O best of sages, the names of their mountain ranges are: Krauncha, Vamana, the third is Andhakaraka.
देवव्रतो धमश् चैव तथान्यः पुण्डरीकवान् दुन्दुभिश् च महाशैलो द्विगुणास् ते परस्परम्
Devavrata, Dhama, and another, Pundarikavan; Dundubhi and Mahashaila—these are all twice as large as each other.
द्वीपाद् द्वीपेषु ये शैलास् तथा द्वीपानि ते तथा वर्षेष्व् एतेषु रम्येषु वर्षशैलवरेषु च
The mountains in each island, as well as the islands themselves, and in these beautiful regions and excellent mountain ranges of the regions.
निवसन्ति निरातङ्काः सह देवगणैः प्रजाः पुष्कला पुष्करा धन्यास् ते ख्याताश् च द्विजोत्तमाः
The inhabitants live without distress, together with the hosts of gods; abundant, flourishing, and blessed, they are renowned, O best of twice-born.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश् चानुक्रमोदिताः तत्र नद्यो मुनिश्रेष्ठा याः पिबन्ति तु ते सदा
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras are mentioned in order; there, O best of sages, are rivers which they always drink from.
सप्त प्रधानाः शतशस् तथान्याः क्षुद्रनिम्नगाः गौरी कुमुद्वती चैव संध्या रात्रिर् मनोजवा
Seven principal rivers, and hundreds of other small streams: Gauri, Kumudvati, Sandhya, Ratri, and Manojava.
ख्यातिश् च पुण्डरीका च सप्तैता वर्षनिम्नगाः तत्रापि वर्णैर् भगवान् पुष्कराद्यैर् जनार्दनः
Khyati and Pundarika—these seven rivers flow through the regions; there too, the Blessed Lord Janardana is worshipped in various forms, beginning with Pushkara, according to the divisions.
ध्यानयोगै रुद्ररूप ईज्यते यज्ञसंनिधौ क्रौञ्चद्वीपः समुद्रेण दधिमण्डोदकेन तु
In the practice of meditation and yoga, Rudra is worshipped at the time of sacrifice; the island of Krauncha is surrounded by an ocean of curdled milk.
आवृतः सर्वतः क्रौञ्चद्वीपतुल्येन मानतः दधिमण्डोदकश् चापि शाकद्वीपेन संवृतः
Krauncha island is encircled on all sides by an ocean of curdled milk, equal in extent to the island itself; and this ocean is, in turn, surrounded by the island of Shaka.
क्रौञ्चद्वीपस्य विस्तारद्विगुणेन द्विजोत्तमाः शाकद्वीपेश्वरस्यापि भव्यस्य सुमहात्मनः
O best of twice-born, the island of Shaka is twice the size of Krauncha island; its lord is Bhavya, a great and noble soul.
सप्तैव तनयास् तेषां ददौ वर्षाणि सप्त सः जलदश् च कुमारश् च सुकुमारो मनीरकः
He had seven sons, to whom he gave seven regions: Jalada, Kumara, Sukumara, Maniraka,
कुसमोदश् च मोदाकिः सप्तमश् च महाद्रुमः तत्संज्ञान्य् एव तत्रापि सप्त वर्षाण्य् अनुक्रमात्
Kusamoda, Modaki, and the seventh, Mahadruma; these are their names, and there too are seven regions, each named after them.
तत्रापि पर्वताः सप्त वर्षविच्छेदकारकाः पूर्वस् तत्रोदयगिरिर् जलधारस् तथापरः
There also are seven mountains, dividing the regions: first is Udayagiri, then Jaladhara,
तथा रैवतकः श्यामस् तथैवाम्भोगिरिर् द्विजाः आस्तिकेयस् तथा रम्यः केसरी पर्वतोत्तमः
Then Raivataka, Shyama, and also Ambhogiri, O twice-born; Astikeya, Ramya, and Kesari, the best of mountains.
शाकश् चात्र महावृक्षः सिद्धगन्धर्वसेवितः यत्पत्त्रवातसंस्पर्शाद् आह्लादो जायते परः
There is also the great tree Shaka, attended by Siddhas and Gandharvas; by the touch of the wind passing through its leaves, supreme delight arises.
तत्र पुण्या जनपदाश् चातुर्वर्ण्यसमन्विताः निवसन्ति महात्मानो निरातङ्का निरामयाः
There, holy peoples of all four classes dwell—great souls, free from danger and disease.
नद्यश् चात्र महापुण्याः सर्वपापभयापहाः सुकुमारी कुमारी च नलिनी रेणुका च या
There also are most sacred rivers, removing all sin and fear: Sukumari, Kumari, Nalini, and Renuka.
इक्षुश् च धेनुका चैव गभस्ती सप्तमी तथा अन्यास् त्व् अयुतशस् तत्र क्षुद्रनद्यो द्विजोत्तमाः
Ikshu, Dhenuka, Gabhasti, and Saptami as well; and, O best of twice-born, there are tens of thousands of other small rivers there.
महीधरास् तथा सन्ति शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ताः पिबन्ति मुदा युक्ता जलदादिषु ये स्थिताः
There are also hundreds and thousands of great mountains; those who dwell on Jaladhi and the others drink their waters with joy.
वर्षेषु ये जनपदाश् चतुर्थार्थसमन्विताः नद्यश् चात्र महापुण्याः स्वर्गाद् अभ्येत्य मेदिनीम्
In those regions, the peoples are endowed with a fourth part of virtue; there too are most sacred rivers, which descend from heaven to earth.
धर्महानिर् न तेष्व् अस्ति न संहर्षो न शुक् तथा मर्यादाव्युत्क्रमश् चापि तेषु देशेषु सप्तसु
There is no decline of righteousness among them, nor excessive joy or sorrow; nor is there any transgression of boundaries in those seven lands.
मगाश् च मागधाश् चैव मानसा मन्दगास् तथा मगा ब्राह्मणभूयिष्ठा मागधाः क्षत्रियास् तु ते
There are the Magas, Magadhas, Manasas, and Mandagas; the Magas are mostly Brahmins, and the Magadhas are Kshatriyas.
वैश्यास् तु मानसास् तेषां शूद्रा ज्ञेयास् तु मन्दगाः शाकद्वीपे स्थितैर् विष्णुः सूर्यरूपधरो हरिः
The Manasas among them are Vaishyas, and the Mandagas are to be known as Shudras; on Shaka island, Vishnu, in the form of the Sun, is present as Hari.
यथोक्तैर् इज्यते सम्यक् कर्मभिर् नियतात्मभिः शाकद्वीपस् ततो विप्राः क्षीरोदेन समन्ततः
He is worshipped there, as described, with proper rites by those of disciplined mind; beyond Shaka island, O Brahmins, is the ocean of milk on all sides.
शाकद्वीपप्रमाणेन वलयेनेव वेष्टितः क्षीराब्धिः सर्वतो विप्राः पुष्कराख्येन वेष्टितः
The ocean of milk is encircled on all sides by a ring equal in measure to Śākadvīpa, O Brahmins, and this is surrounded by what is called Puṣkara.
द्वीपेन शाकद्वीपात् तु द्विगुणेन समन्ततः पुष्करे सवनस्यापि महावीतो ऽभवत् सुतः
The island of Puṣkara, which is twice the size of Śākadvīpa in every direction, became the great region of Savana's son.
धातकिश् च तयोस् तद्वद् द्वे वर्षे नामसंज्ञिते महावीतं तथैवान्यद् धातकीखण्डसंज्ञितम्
Dhātaki, likewise, had two regions named after him, both bearing the same designation; another great region was called Dhātakīkhanda.
एकश् चात्र महाभागाः प्रख्यातो वर्षपर्वतः मानसोत्तरसंज्ञो वै मध्यतो वलयाकृतिः
There is one renowned mountain here, O fortunate ones, known as Mānasottara, which lies in the middle in the shape of a ring.
योजनानां सहस्राणि ऊर्ध्वं पञ्चाशद् उच्छ्रितः तावद् एव च विस्तीर्णः सर्वतः परिमण्डलः
It rises fifty thousand yojanas high and is equally wide in every direction, forming a complete circle.
पुष्करद्वीपवलयं मध्येन विभजन्न् इव स्थितो ऽसौ तेन विच्छिन्नं जातं वर्षद्वयं हि तत्
This mountain stands as if dividing the ring of Puṣkaradvīpa in the middle, and thus the two regions became separated.
