सप्तैतानि तु वर्षाणि चातुर्वर्ण्ययुतानि च वर्णाश् च शाल्मले ये च वसन्त्य् एषु द्विजोत्तमाः
These seven regions are inhabited by the four social classes, O best of twice-born, and those who dwell in Śālmalī belong to these divisions.
कपिलाश् चारुणाः पीताः कृष्णाश् चैव पृथक् पृथक् ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश् चैव यजन्ति तम्
Kapila, Āruṇa, Pīta, and Kṛṣṇa—each distinct—are the Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras, who worship him.
भगवन्तं समस्तस्य विष्णुम् आत्मानम् अव्ययम् वायुभूतं मखश्रेष्ठैर् यज्वानो यज्ञसंस्थितम्
They worship the Blessed Lord Viṣṇu, the imperishable soul of all, present as the wind, established in sacrifice by the best of sacrificers.
देवानाम् अत्र सांनिध्यम् अतीव सुमनोहरे शाल्मलिश् च महावृक्षो नामनिर्वृत्तिकारकः
Here, the presence of the gods is exceedingly delightful; and the great tree Śālmalī brings about the fulfillment of names.
एष द्वीपः समुद्रेण सुरोदेन समावृतः विस्ताराच् छाल्मलेश् चैव समेन तु समन्ततः
This island is surrounded by the ocean of Suroda, equal in extent to Śālmalī on all sides.
सुरोदकः परिवृतः कुशद्वीपेन सर्वतः शाल्मलस्य तु विस्ताराद् द्विगुणेन समन्ततः
The ocean of Suroda is encircled on all sides by Kuśa Island, which is twice the breadth of Śālmalī.
ज्योतिष्मतः कुशद्वीपे शृणुध्वं तस्य पुत्रकान् उद्भिदो वेणुमांश् चैव स्वैरथो रन्धनो धृतिः
Hear now of the sons of Jyotiṣmat in Kuśa Island: Udbhida, Veṇumān, Svairatha, Randhana, and Dhṛti.
प्रभाकरो ऽथ कपिलस् तन्नाम्ना वर्षपद्धतिः तस्यां वसन्ति मनुजैः सह दैतेयदानवाः
Prabhākara and Kapila are also among them; these are the names of the regions, and in them dwell humans together with Daityas and Dānavas.
तथैव देवगन्धर्वा यक्षकिंपुरुषादयः वर्णास् तत्रापि चत्वारो निजानुष्ठानतत्पराः
In the same way, the gods, gandharvas, yakshas, kimpurushas, and others—there too, the four castes are present, each devoted to their own prescribed duties.
दमिनः शुष्मिणः स्नेहा मान्दहाश् च द्विजोत्तमाः ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश् चानुक्रमोदिताः
Disciplined, energetic, affectionate, and slow-minded, O best of twice-born, the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras are mentioned in order.
यथोक्तकर्मकर्तृत्वात् स्वाधिकारक्षयाय ते तत्र ते तु कुशद्वीपे ब्रह्मरूपं जनार्दनम्
Because they perform the actions as previously described, and due to the exhaustion of their own rights, there in Kushadvipa they worship Janardana in the form of Brahma.
यजन्तः क्षपयन्त्य् उग्रम् अधिकारफलप्रदम् विद्रुमो हेमशैलश् च द्युतिमान् पुष्टिमांस् तथा
By offering sacrifices, they dispel intense results that grant the fruits of their rights; Vidruma, Hemashaila, Dyutiman, and Pushtiman are thus named.
कुशेशयो हरिश् चैव सप्तमो मन्दराचलः वर्षाचलास् तु सप्तैते द्वीपे तत्र द्विजोत्तमाः
Kusheshaya and Hari, as well as the seventh, Mandarachala—these seven are the mountain ranges in that island, O best of twice-born.
नद्यश् च सप्त तासां तु वक्ष्ये नामान्य् अनुक्रमात् धूतपापा शिवा चैव पवित्रा संमतिस् तथा
And there are seven rivers; I will declare their names in order: Dhutapapa, Shiva, Pavitra, and Sammati likewise.
विद्युद् अम्भो मही चान्या सर्वपापहरास् त्व् इमाः अन्याः सहस्रशस् तत्र क्षुद्रनद्यस् तथाचलाः
Vidyut, Ambha, and Mahī are others, all removing every sin; besides these, there are thousands of small rivers and streams.
कुशद्वीपे कुशस्तम्बः संज्ञया तस्य तत् स्मृतम् तत्प्रमाणेन स द्वीपो घृतोदेन समावृतः
In Kushadvipa, Kushastamba is remembered by that name; by its measure, that island is surrounded by the ocean of clarified butter.
घृतोदश् च समुद्रो वै क्रौञ्चद्वीपेन संवृतः क्रौञ्चद्वीपो मुनिश्रेष्ठाः श्रूयतां चापरो महान्
And the ocean of clarified butter is encircled by Kraunchadvipa; O best of sages, listen now about the great Kraunchadvipa.
कुशद्वीपस्य विस्ताराद् द्विगुणो यस्य विस्तरः क्रौञ्चद्वीपे द्युतिमतः पुत्राः सप्त महात्मनः
From the extent of Kushadvipa, Kraunchadvipa is twice its size; in Kraunchadvipa, the seven sons of Dyutiman, the great-souled, reside.
तन्नामानि च वर्षाणि तेषां चक्रे महामनाः कुशगो मन्दगश् चोष्णः पीवरो ऽथान्धकारकः
Their names and the regions are established by the great-minded: Kushaga, Mandaga, Ushna, Pivara, and Andhakaraka.
मुनिश् च दुन्दुभिश् चैव सप्तैते तत्सुता द्विजाः तत्रापि देवगन्धर्वसेविताः सुमनोरमाः
Muni and Dundubhi are also among them; these seven are his sons, O twice-born. There too, served by gods and gandharvas, are delightful regions.
वर्षाचला मुनिश्रेष्ठास् तेषां नामानि भो द्विजाः क्रौञ्चश् च वामनश् चैव तृतीयश् चान्धकारकः
O best of sages, the names of their mountain ranges are: Krauncha, Vamana, the third is Andhakaraka.
देवव्रतो धमश् चैव तथान्यः पुण्डरीकवान् दुन्दुभिश् च महाशैलो द्विगुणास् ते परस्परम्
Devavrata, Dhama, and another, Pundarikavan; Dundubhi and Mahashaila—these are all twice as large as each other.
द्वीपाद् द्वीपेषु ये शैलास् तथा द्वीपानि ते तथा वर्षेष्व् एतेषु रम्येषु वर्षशैलवरेषु च
The mountains in each island, as well as the islands themselves, and in these beautiful regions and excellent mountain ranges of the regions.
निवसन्ति निरातङ्काः सह देवगणैः प्रजाः पुष्कला पुष्करा धन्यास् ते ख्याताश् च द्विजोत्तमाः
The inhabitants live without distress, together with the hosts of gods; abundant, flourishing, and blessed, they are renowned, O best of twice-born.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश् चानुक्रमोदिताः तत्र नद्यो मुनिश्रेष्ठा याः पिबन्ति तु ते सदा
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras are mentioned in order; there, O best of sages, are rivers which they always drink from.
सप्त प्रधानाः शतशस् तथान्याः क्षुद्रनिम्नगाः गौरी कुमुद्वती चैव संध्या रात्रिर् मनोजवा
Seven principal rivers, and hundreds of other small streams: Gauri, Kumudvati, Sandhya, Ratri, and Manojava.
ख्यातिश् च पुण्डरीका च सप्तैता वर्षनिम्नगाः तत्रापि वर्णैर् भगवान् पुष्कराद्यैर् जनार्दनः
Khyati and Pundarika—these seven rivers flow through the regions; there too, the Blessed Lord Janardana is worshipped in various forms, beginning with Pushkara, according to the divisions.
ध्यानयोगै रुद्ररूप ईज्यते यज्ञसंनिधौ क्रौञ्चद्वीपः समुद्रेण दधिमण्डोदकेन तु
In the practice of meditation and yoga, Rudra is worshipped at the time of sacrifice; the island of Krauncha is surrounded by an ocean of curdled milk.
आवृतः सर्वतः क्रौञ्चद्वीपतुल्येन मानतः दधिमण्डोदकश् चापि शाकद्वीपेन संवृतः
Krauncha island is encircled on all sides by an ocean of curdled milk, equal in extent to the island itself; and this ocean is, in turn, surrounded by the island of Shaka.
क्रौञ्चद्वीपस्य विस्तारद्विगुणेन द्विजोत्तमाः शाकद्वीपेश्वरस्यापि भव्यस्य सुमहात्मनः
O best of twice-born, the island of Shaka is twice the size of Krauncha island; its lord is Bhavya, a great and noble soul.
