तेषां नद्यश् च सप्तैव वर्षाणां तु समुद्रगाः नामतस् ताः प्रवक्ष्यामि श्रुताः पापं हरन्ति याः
There are also seven rivers in those lands, flowing to the sea; I will tell you their names, which, when heard, remove sin.
अनुतप्ता शिखा चैव विप्राशा त्रिदिवा क्रमुः अमृता सुकृता चैव सप्तैतास् तत्र निम्नगाः
Anutaptā, Śikhā, Viprāśā, Tridivā, Kramu, Amṛtā, and Sukṛtā—these are the seven rivers that flow there.
एते शैलास् तथा नद्यः प्रधानाः कथिता द्विजाः क्षुद्रनद्यस् तथा शैलास् तत्र सन्ति सहस्रशः
These are the principal mountains and rivers, O twice-born; there are also thousands of smaller rivers and mountains there.
ताः पिबन्ति सदा हृष्टा नदीर् जनपदास् तु ते अवसर्पिणी नदी तेषां न चैवोत्सर्पिणी द्विजाः
The people of those lands always drink from those rivers with joy; among their rivers, there are only those that descend, not those that rise, O twice-born.
न तेष्व् अस्ति युगावस्था तेषु स्थानेषु सप्तसु त्रेतायुगसमः कालः सर्वदैव द्विजोत्तमाः
There is no division of ages among those seven regions; O best of twice-born, the time there is always equal to the Tretā Yuga.
प्लक्षद्वीपादिके विप्राः शाकद्वीपान्तिकेषु वै पञ्चवर्षसहस्राणि जना जीवन्त्य् अनामयाः
O sages, in Plakṣadvīpa and the regions beyond Śākadvīpa, people live for five thousand years, free from illness.
धर्मश् चतुर्विधस् तेषु वर्णाश्रमविभागजः वर्णाश् च तत्र चत्वारस् तान् बुधाः प्रवदामि वः
There, dharma is fourfold, arising from the division of classes and stages of life; there are four classes, which I will now tell you, O wise ones.
आर्यकाः कुरवश् चैव विविश्वा भाविनश् च ये विप्रक्षत्रियवैश्यास् ते शूद्राश् च मुनिसत्तमाः
They are called Āryakas, Kurus, Viviśvas, and Bhāvinas; O best of sages, these are the Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras.
जम्बूवृक्षप्रमाणस् तु तन्मध्ये सुमहातरुः प्लक्षस् तन्नामसंज्ञो ऽयं प्लक्षद्वीपो द्विजोत्तमाः
In the center of that land stands a great tree, a Plakṣa, equal in size to the Jambū tree; from this it is named Plakṣadvīpa, O best of twice-born.
इज्यते तत्र भगवांस् तैर् वर्णैर् आर्यकादिभिः सोमरूपी जगत्स्रष्टा सर्वः सर्वेश्वरो हरिः
There, the Lord is worshipped by those classes, beginning with the Āryakas; Hari, the creator of all, the Lord of all, appears there in the form of Soma.
प्लक्षद्वीपप्रमाणेन प्लक्षद्वीपः समावृतः तथैवेक्षुरसोदेन परिवेषानुकारिणा
Plakṣa Island is surrounded, in the same measure as Plakṣa Island itself, by an ocean of sugarcane juice, encircling it in a similar fashion.
इत्य् एतद् वो मुनिश्रेष्ठाः प्लक्षद्वीप उदाहृतः संक्षेपेण मया भूयः शाल्मलं तं निबोधत
Thus, O best of sages, Plakṣa Island has been described to you in brief by me; now, listen further about Śālmalī Island.
शाल्मलस्येश्वरो वीरो वपुष्मांस् तत्सुता द्विजाः तेषां तु नाम संज्ञानि सप्तवर्षाणि तानि वै
The lord of Śālmalī is Vīra, who is radiant; his sons, O twice-born ones, are seven in number, and their names are as follows.
श्वेतो ऽथ हरितश् चैव जीमूतो रोहितस् तथा वैद्युतो मानसश् चैव सुप्रभश् च द्विजोत्तमाः
Śveta, Harita, Jīmūta, Rohita, Vaidyuta, Mānasa, and Suprabha—these, O best of twice-born, are their names.
शाल्मनश् च समुद्रो ऽसौ द्वीपेनेक्षुरसोदकः विस्ताराद् द्विगुणेनाथ सर्वतः संवृतः स्थितः
The ocean of Śālmalī, filled with sugarcane juice, surrounds the island on all sides, being twice its breadth.
तत्रापि पर्वताः सप्त विज्ञेया रत्नयोनयः वर्षाभिव्यञ्जकास् ते तु तथा सप्तैव निम्नगाः
There also are seven mountains, known as sources of jewels, and seven rivers, each marking a region.
कुमुदश् चोन्नतश् चैव तृतीयस् तु बलाहकः द्रोणो यत्र महौषध्यः स चतुर्थो महीधरः
Kumuda and Unnata are the first two; the third is Balāhaka; Droṇa, where great medicinal herbs grow, is the fourth mountain.
कङ्कस् तु पञ्चमः षष्ठो महिषः सप्तमस् तथा ककुद्मान् पर्वतवरः सरिन्नामान्य् अतो द्विजाः
Kaṅka is the fifth, Mahiṣa the sixth, and Kakudmat, the best of mountains, is the seventh; now, O twice-born, hear the names of the rivers.
श्रोणी तोया वितृष्णा च चन्द्रा शुक्रा विमोचनी निवृत्तिः सप्तमी तासां स्मृतास् ताः पापशान्तिदाः
Śroṇī, Toyā, Vitṛṣṇā, Candrā, Śukrā, Vimocanī, and Nivṛtti are the seven rivers, remembered as givers of relief from sin.
श्वेतं च लोहितं चैव जीमूतं हरितं तथा वैद्युतं मानसं चैव सुप्रभं नाम सप्तमम्
Śveta, Lohita, Jīmūta, Harita, Vaidyuta, Mānasa, and the seventh named Suprabha—these are the regions.
सप्तैतानि तु वर्षाणि चातुर्वर्ण्ययुतानि च वर्णाश् च शाल्मले ये च वसन्त्य् एषु द्विजोत्तमाः
These seven regions are inhabited by the four social classes, O best of twice-born, and those who dwell in Śālmalī belong to these divisions.
कपिलाश् चारुणाः पीताः कृष्णाश् चैव पृथक् पृथक् ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश् चैव यजन्ति तम्
Kapila, Āruṇa, Pīta, and Kṛṣṇa—each distinct—are the Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras, who worship him.
भगवन्तं समस्तस्य विष्णुम् आत्मानम् अव्ययम् वायुभूतं मखश्रेष्ठैर् यज्वानो यज्ञसंस्थितम्
They worship the Blessed Lord Viṣṇu, the imperishable soul of all, present as the wind, established in sacrifice by the best of sacrificers.
देवानाम् अत्र सांनिध्यम् अतीव सुमनोहरे शाल्मलिश् च महावृक्षो नामनिर्वृत्तिकारकः
Here, the presence of the gods is exceedingly delightful; and the great tree Śālmalī brings about the fulfillment of names.
एष द्वीपः समुद्रेण सुरोदेन समावृतः विस्ताराच् छाल्मलेश् चैव समेन तु समन्ततः
This island is surrounded by the ocean of Suroda, equal in extent to Śālmalī on all sides.
सुरोदकः परिवृतः कुशद्वीपेन सर्वतः शाल्मलस्य तु विस्ताराद् द्विगुणेन समन्ततः
The ocean of Suroda is encircled on all sides by Kuśa Island, which is twice the breadth of Śālmalī.
ज्योतिष्मतः कुशद्वीपे शृणुध्वं तस्य पुत्रकान् उद्भिदो वेणुमांश् चैव स्वैरथो रन्धनो धृतिः
Hear now of the sons of Jyotiṣmat in Kuśa Island: Udbhida, Veṇumān, Svairatha, Randhana, and Dhṛti.
प्रभाकरो ऽथ कपिलस् तन्नाम्ना वर्षपद्धतिः तस्यां वसन्ति मनुजैः सह दैतेयदानवाः
Prabhākara and Kapila are also among them; these are the names of the regions, and in them dwell humans together with Daityas and Dānavas.
तथैव देवगन्धर्वा यक्षकिंपुरुषादयः वर्णास् तत्रापि चत्वारो निजानुष्ठानतत्पराः
In the same way, the gods, gandharvas, yakshas, kimpurushas, and others—there too, the four castes are present, each devoted to their own prescribed duties.
दमिनः शुष्मिणः स्नेहा मान्दहाश् च द्विजोत्तमाः ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश् चानुक्रमोदिताः
Disciplined, energetic, affectionate, and slow-minded, O best of twice-born, the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras are mentioned in order.
