Encircling Jambūdvīpa, with a span of a hundred thousand yojanas, O Brāhmaṇas, the ocean of milk stands outside in a circular form.
Just as the island called Jambū is surrounded by the ocean of brine, so too, encircling the salt ocean, stands the island of Plakṣa.
The expanse of Jambūdvīpa is said to be one hundred thousand yojanas; O sages, in Plakṣadvīpa it is declared to be twice that.
There were seven sons of Medhātithi, the lord of Plakṣadvīpa; the foremost among them was named Śāntabhaya, and next to him was Śiśira.
Sukhodaya, Ānanda, Śiva, Kṣemaka, and Dhruva were the others; these seven were indeed the rulers of Plakṣadvīpa.
The regions are Śāntabhaya in the east, then Śiśira, Sukhada, Ānanda, Śiva, Kṣemaka, and also Dhruva.
Their boundaries are marked by mountains, and there are other mountains dividing the regions; listen, O best of sages, to the names of these seven.
Gomeda, Candra, Nārada, Dandubhi, Somaka, Sumanā, and the seventh is Vaibhrāja—these are the mountains.
In those delightful mountain regions and lands, sinless ones dwell together with gods and gandharvas, along with their peoples.
In those blessed lands, the people are heroic and do not die; there is no sorrow or disease, and happiness prevails at all times.
There are also seven rivers in those lands, flowing to the sea; I will tell you their names, which, when heard, remove sin.
Anutaptā, Śikhā, Viprāśā, Tridivā, Kramu, Amṛtā, and Sukṛtā—these are the seven rivers that flow there.
These are the principal mountains and rivers, O twice-born; there are also thousands of smaller rivers and mountains there.
The people of those lands always drink from those rivers with joy; among their rivers, there are only those that descend, not those that rise, O twice-born.
There is no division of ages among those seven regions; O best of twice-born, the time there is always equal to the Tretā Yuga.
O sages, in Plakṣadvīpa and the regions beyond Śākadvīpa, people live for five thousand years, free from illness.
There, dharma is fourfold, arising from the division of classes and stages of life; there are four classes, which I will now tell you, O wise ones.
They are called Āryakas, Kurus, Viviśvas, and Bhāvinas; O best of sages, these are the Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras.
In the center of that land stands a great tree, a Plakṣa, equal in size to the Jambū tree; from this it is named Plakṣadvīpa, O best of twice-born.
There, the Lord is worshipped by those classes, beginning with the Āryakas; Hari, the creator of all, the Lord of all, appears there in the form of Soma.
Plakṣa Island is surrounded, in the same measure as Plakṣa Island itself, by an ocean of sugarcane juice, encircling it in a similar fashion.
Thus, O best of sages, Plakṣa Island has been described to you in brief by me; now, listen further about Śālmalī Island.
The lord of Śālmalī is Vīra, who is radiant; his sons, O twice-born ones, are seven in number, and their names are as follows.
Śveta, Harita, Jīmūta, Rohita, Vaidyuta, Mānasa, and Suprabha—these, O best of twice-born, are their names.
The ocean of Śālmalī, filled with sugarcane juice, surrounds the island on all sides, being twice its breadth.
There also are seven mountains, known as sources of jewels, and seven rivers, each marking a region.
Kumuda and Unnata are the first two; the third is Balāhaka; Droṇa, where great medicinal herbs grow, is the fourth mountain.
Kaṅka is the fifth, Mahiṣa the sixth, and Kakudmat, the best of mountains, is the seventh; now, O twice-born, hear the names of the rivers.
Śroṇī, Toyā, Vitṛṣṇā, Candrā, Śukrā, Vimocanī, and Nivṛtti are the seven rivers, remembered as givers of relief from sin.
Śveta, Lohita, Jīmūta, Harita, Vaidyuta, Mānasa, and the seventh named Suprabha—these are the regions.
