ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्या मध्ये शूद्राश् च भागशः इज्यायुद्धवणिज्याद्यवृत्तिमन्तो व्यवस्थिताः
Brahmins, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and, in part, Śūdras are established in the middle, engaged in sacrifice, warfare, trade, and other occupations.
शतद्रुचन्द्रभागाद्या हिमवत्पादनिःसृताः वेदस्मृतिमुखाश् चान्याः पारियात्रोद्भवा मुने
The rivers Śatadrū, Candrabhāgā, and others arise from the foot of the Himalaya; others, like those mentioned in the Vedas and Smṛtis, originate from Pāriyātra, O sage.
नर्मदासुरमाद्याश् च नद्यो विन्ध्यविनिःसृताः तापीपयोष्णीनिर्विन्ध्याकावेरीप्रमुखा नदीः
Narmadā, Suramā, and other rivers spring from the Vindhya; Tāpi, Payoshnī, Nirvindhyā, and foremost Kaverī are among the rivers.
ऋक्षपादोद्भवा ह्य् एताः श्रुताः पापं हरन्ति याः गोदावरीभीमरथीकृष्णवेण्यादिकास् तथा
These arise from the foot of Ṛkṣa, and are renowned for removing sin: Godāvarī, Bhīma, Rathī, Kṛṣṇā, Veṇī, and others likewise.
सह्यपादोद्भवा नद्यः स्मृताः पापभयापहाः कृतमालाताम्रपर्णीप्रमुखा मलयोद्भवाः
The rivers arising from the Sahya mountains are remembered as removing sin and fear; foremost among them are the Kṛtamālā and Tāmraparṇī, originating from the Malaya range.
त्रिसांध्यर्षिकुल्याद्यामहेन्द्रप्रभवाः स्मृताः ऋषिकुल्याकुमाराद्याः शुक्तिमत्पादसंभवाः
The rivers such as the Ṛṣikulyā, Kumārā, and others, arising from the Mahendra mountain, are remembered; those like Ṛṣikulyā and Kumārā originate from the Śuktimat mountain.
आसां नद्युपनद्यश् च सन्त्य् अन्यास् तु सहस्रशः तास्व् इमे कुरुपञ्चालमध्यदेशादयो जनाः
Among these rivers and their tributaries, there are thousands more; in their regions dwell people of Kurus, Pañcālas, and the central lands.
पूर्वदेशादिकाश् चैव कामरूपनिवासिनः पौण्ड्राः कलिङ्गा मगधा दाक्षिणात्याश् च सर्वशः
Likewise, those residing in the eastern regions, Kāmarūpa, Pauṇḍra, Kaliṅga, Magadha, and all the southern lands.
तथा परान्त्याः सौराष्ट्राः शूद्राभीरास् तथार्बुदाः मारुका मालवाश् चैव पारियात्रनिवासिनः
Similarly, the Saurāṣṭras, Śūdras, Ābhīras, Arbudas, Mārukas, Mālavas, and those dwelling in the Pāriyātra region.
सौवीराः सैन्धवापन्नाः शाल्वाः शाकलवासिनः मद्रारामास् तथाम्बष्ठाः पारसीकादयस् तथा
The Sauvīras, Saindhavas, Śālvas, those residing in Śākala, Madras, Rāmas, Ambaṣṭhas, and likewise the Pārasīkas and others.
आसां पिबन्ति सलिलं वसन्ति सरितां सदा समोपेता महाभाग हृष्टपुष्टजनाकुलाः
They drink the waters of these rivers and always dwell along their banks, O noble one, surrounded by joyful and prosperous people.
वसन्ति भारते वर्षे युगान्य् अत्र महामुने कृतं त्रेता द्वापरं च कलिश् चान्यत्र न क्वचित्
In the land of Bhārata, O great sage, people dwell here for ages: Kṛta, Tretā, Dvāpara, and Kali; nowhere else do these occur.
तपस् तप्यन्ति यतयो जुह्वते चात्र यज्विनः दानानि चात्र दीयन्ते परलोकार्थम् आदरात्
Here ascetics practice austerities, sacrificers offer oblations, and gifts are given with reverence for the sake of the next world.
पुरुषैर् यज्ञपुरुषो जम्बूद्वीपे सदेज्यते यज्ञैर् यज्ञमयो विष्णुर् अन्यद्वीपेषु चान्यथा
On Jambūdvīpa, the Purusha of sacrifice is worshipped by men through sacrifices; Viṣṇu, who is composed of sacrifice, is worshipped differently on other islands.
अत्रापि भारतं श्रेष्ठं जम्बूद्वीपे महामुने यतो हि कर्मभूर् एषा यतो ऽन्या भोगभूमयः
Even here, O great sage, Bhārata is the foremost in Jambūdvīpa, for this is the land of action, while the others are lands of enjoyment.
अत्र जन्मसहस्राणां सहस्रैर् अपि सत्तम कदाचिल् लभते जन्तुर् मानुष्यं पुण्यसंचयन्
Here, O noble one, after thousands upon thousands of births, a creature may sometimes obtain human birth through the accumulation of merit.
गायन्ति देवाः किल गीतकानि धन्यास् तु ये भारतभूमिभागे स्वर्गापवर्गास्पदहेतुभूते भवन्ति भूयः पुरुषा मनुष्याः
The gods indeed sing songs, saying, 'Blessed are those who, in the portion of Bhārata, become humans, for it is the cause and abode of heaven and liberation.'
कर्माण्य् असंकल्पिततत्फलानि संन्यस्य विष्णौ परमात्मरूपे अवाप्य तां कर्ममहीम् अनन्ते तस्मिंल् लयं ये त्व् अमलाः प्रयान्ति
Those who renounce actions and their desired fruits, dedicating them to Viṣṇu in the form of the Supreme Self, having attained the greatness of action in the Infinite, go to dissolution, being pure.
जानीम नो तत्कूवयं विलीने स्वर्गप्रदे कर्मणि देहबन्धम् प्राप्स्यन्ति धन्याः खलु ते मनुष्या ये भारतेनेन्द्रियविप्रहीनाः
We know, let us declare, that when the action granting heaven is dissolved, the bond of the body is attained; truly blessed are those humans who, in Bhārata, are freed from the senses.
नववर्षं च भो विप्रा जम्बूद्वीपम् इदं मया लक्षयोजनविस्तारं संक्षेपात् कथितं द्विजाः
O Brāhmaṇas, this Jambūdvīpa, comprising nine regions, has been described by me in brief; it extends for a hundred thousand yojanas.
जम्बूद्वीपं समावृत्य लक्षयोजनविस्तरः भो द्विजा वलयाकारः स्थितः क्षीरोदधिर् बहिः
Encircling Jambūdvīpa, with a span of a hundred thousand yojanas, O Brāhmaṇas, the ocean of milk stands outside in a circular form.
क्षारोदेन यथा द्वीपो जम्बूसंज्ञो ऽभिवेष्टितः संवेष्ट्य क्षारम् उदधिं प्लक्षद्वीपस् तथा स्थितः
Just as the island called Jambū is surrounded by the ocean of brine, so too, encircling the salt ocean, stands the island of Plakṣa.
जम्बूद्वीपस्य विस्तारः शतसाहस्रसंमितः स एव द्विगुणो विप्राः प्लक्षद्वीपे ऽप्य् उदाहृतः
The expanse of Jambūdvīpa is said to be one hundred thousand yojanas; O sages, in Plakṣadvīpa it is declared to be twice that.
सप्त मेधातिथेः पुत्राः प्लक्षद्वीपेश्वरस्य वै श्रेष्ठः शान्तभयो नाम शिशिरस् तदनन्तरम्
There were seven sons of Medhātithi, the lord of Plakṣadvīpa; the foremost among them was named Śāntabhaya, and next to him was Śiśira.
सुखोदयस् तथानन्दः शिवः क्षेमक एव च ध्रुवश् च सप्तमस् तेषां प्लक्षद्वीपेश्वरा हि ते
Sukhodaya, Ānanda, Śiva, Kṣemaka, and Dhruva were the others; these seven were indeed the rulers of Plakṣadvīpa.
पूर्वं शान्तभयं वर्षं शिशिरं सुखदं तथा आनन्दं च शिवं चैव क्षेमकं ध्रुवम् एव च
The regions are Śāntabhaya in the east, then Śiśira, Sukhada, Ānanda, Śiva, Kṣemaka, and also Dhruva.
मर्यादाकारकास् तेषां तथान्ये वर्षपर्वताः सप्तैव तेषां नामानि शृणुध्वं मुनिसत्तमाः
Their boundaries are marked by mountains, and there are other mountains dividing the regions; listen, O best of sages, to the names of these seven.
गोमेदश् चैव चन्द्रश् च नारदो दन्दुभिस् तथा सोमकः सुमनाः शैलो वैभ्राजश् चैव सप्तमः
Gomeda, Candra, Nārada, Dandubhi, Somaka, Sumanā, and the seventh is Vaibhrāja—these are the mountains.
वर्षाचलेषु रम्येषु वर्षेष्व् एतेषु चानघाः वसन्ति देवगन्धर्वसहिताः सहितं प्रजाः
In those delightful mountain regions and lands, sinless ones dwell together with gods and gandharvas, along with their peoples.
तेषु पुण्या जनपदा वीरा न म्रियते जनः नाधयो व्याधयो वापि सर्वकालसुखं हि तत्
In those blessed lands, the people are heroic and do not die; there is no sorrow or disease, and happiness prevails at all times.
