इत्य् एते हि मया प्रोक्ता मर्यादापर्वता द्विजाः जठरावस्थिता मेरोर् येषां द्वौ द्वौ चतुर्दिशम्
Thus, O twice-born, I have described the boundary mountains situated around Meru, two by two in each of the four directions.
मेरोश् चतुर्दिशं ये तु प्रोक्ताः केसरपर्वताः शीतान्ताद्या द्विजास् तेषाम् अतीव हि मनोहराः
And those mountains called Kesara, which I have mentioned in the four directions of Meru, beginning with Shita, O twice-born, are exceedingly delightful.
शैलानाम् अन्तरद्रोण्यः सिद्धचारणसेविताः सुरम्याणि तथा तासु काननानि पुराणि च
The inner valleys of these mountains, frequented by Siddhas and Caranas, are most charming, and within them are ancient forests as well.
लक्ष्मीविष्ण्वग्निसूर्येन्द्रदेवानां मुनिसत्तमाः तास्व् आयतनवर्याणि जुष्टानि नरकिंनरैः
O best of sages, in those places are the foremost shrines of Lakshmi, Vishnu, Agni, Surya, Indra, and the gods, adorned by humans and Kinnaras.
गन्धर्वयक्षरक्षांसि तथा दैतेयदानवाः क्रीडन्ति तासु रम्यासु शैलद्रोणीष्व् अहर्निशम्
Gandharvas, Yakshas, Rakshasas, as well as Daityas and Danavas, play day and night in those delightful mountain valleys.
भौमा ह्य् एते स्मृताः स्वर्गा धर्मिणाम् आलया द्विजाः नैतेषु पापकर्तारो यान्ति जन्मशतैर् अपि
Indeed, these are remembered as earthly heavens, the abodes of the righteous, O twice-born; evil-doers do not reach them, even in a hundred births.
भद्राश्वे भगवान् विष्णुर् आस्ते हयशिरा द्विजाः वाराहः केतुमाले तु भारते कूर्मरूपधृक्
In Bhadrāśva, the blessed Viṣṇu abides as Hayagrīva, O twice-born; in Ketumāla, he is the Boar; in Bhārata, he takes the form of the Tortoise.
मत्स्यरूपश् च गोविन्दः कुरुष्व् आस्ते सनातनः विश्वरूपेण सर्वत्र सर्वः सर्वेश्वरो हरिः
Govinda dwells among the Kurus in the form of the Fish, eternal; Hari, the Lord of all, is present everywhere in his universal form.
सर्वस्याधारभूतो ऽसौ द्विजा आस्ते ऽखिलात्मकः यानि किंपुरुषाद्यानि वर्षाण्य् अष्टौ द्विजोत्तमाः
He is the foundation of all, O twice-born, and pervades everything; as for the eight regions, beginning with Kiṃpuruṣa, O best of the twice-born—
न तेषु शोको नायासो नोद्वेगः क्षुद्भयादिकम् सुस्थाः प्रजा निरातङ्काः सर्वदुःखविवर्जिताः
In those regions, there is no sorrow, no fatigue, no distress, nor fear of hunger; the people are well, free from trouble, and untouched by all suffering.
दशद्वादशवर्षाणां सहस्राणि स्थिरायुषः नैतेषु भौमान्य् अन्यानि क्षुत्पिपासादि नो द्विजाः
Their lifespans are steady, lasting ten or twelve thousand years; in those lands, O twice-born, there is no earthly affliction such as hunger or thirst.
कृतत्रेतादिका नैव तेषु स्थानेषु कल्पना सर्वेष्व् एतेषु वर्षेषु सप्त सप्त कुलाचलाः नद्यश् च शतशस् तेभ्यः प्रसूता या द्विजोत्तमाः
There is no conception of the Krita, Treta, or other ages in those places; in each of these regions, there are seven great mountain ranges, and hundreds of rivers arise from them, O best of the twice-born.
उत्तरेण समुद्रस्य हिमाद्रेश् चैव दक्षिणे वर्षं तद् भारतं नाम भारती यत्र संततिः
To the north of the ocean and south of the Himalaya lies that land called Bhārata, where the lineage of Bharata dwells.
नवयोजनसाहस्रो विस्तारश् च द्विजोत्तमाः कर्मभूमिर् इयं स्वर्गम् अपवर्गं च पृच्छताम्
This land, O best of the twice-born, spans nine thousand yojanas; it is the realm of action, where those who seek may attain heaven or liberation.
महेन्द्रो मलयः सह्यः शुक्तिमान् ऋक्षपर्वतः विन्ध्यश् च पारियात्रश् च सप्तात्र कुलपर्वताः
Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Śuktimān, Ṛkṣa, Vindhya, and Pāriyātra—these are the seven principal mountain ranges here.
अतः संप्राप्यते स्वर्गो मुक्तिम् अस्मात् प्रयाति वै तिर्यक्त्वं नरकं चापि यान्त्य् अतः पुरुषा द्विजाः
From here, one attains heaven, liberation, or, departing from here, may go to animal birth or even hell, O twice-born.
इतः स्वर्गश् च मोक्षश् च मध्यं चान्ते च गच्छति न खल्व् अन्यत्र मर्त्यानां कर्म भूमौ विधीयते
From here, one goes to heaven, liberation, or the intermediate state at the end; nowhere else is the field of action for mortals established.
भारतस्यास्य वर्षस्य नव भेदान् निशामय इन्द्रद्वीपः कसेतुमांस् ताम्रपर्णो गभस्तिमान्
Hear now of the nine divisions of this Bhārata region: Indradvīpa, Kasetumā, Tāmraparṇa, Gabhastimān,
नागद्वीपस् तथा सौम्यो गन्धर्वस् त्व् अथ वारुणः अयं तु नवमस् तेषां द्वीपः सागरसंवृतः
Nāgadvīpa, Saumya, Gandharva, and Vāruṇa; this, the ninth among them, is the island surrounded by the ocean.
योजनानां सहस्रं च द्वीपो ऽयं दक्षिणोत्तरात् पूर्वे किरातास् तिष्ठन्ति पश्चिमे यवनाः स्थिताः
This island stretches a thousand yojanas from south to north; in the east dwell the Kirātas, in the west the Yavanas are settled.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्या मध्ये शूद्राश् च भागशः इज्यायुद्धवणिज्याद्यवृत्तिमन्तो व्यवस्थिताः
Brahmins, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and, in part, Śūdras are established in the middle, engaged in sacrifice, warfare, trade, and other occupations.
शतद्रुचन्द्रभागाद्या हिमवत्पादनिःसृताः वेदस्मृतिमुखाश् चान्याः पारियात्रोद्भवा मुने
The rivers Śatadrū, Candrabhāgā, and others arise from the foot of the Himalaya; others, like those mentioned in the Vedas and Smṛtis, originate from Pāriyātra, O sage.
नर्मदासुरमाद्याश् च नद्यो विन्ध्यविनिःसृताः तापीपयोष्णीनिर्विन्ध्याकावेरीप्रमुखा नदीः
Narmadā, Suramā, and other rivers spring from the Vindhya; Tāpi, Payoshnī, Nirvindhyā, and foremost Kaverī are among the rivers.
ऋक्षपादोद्भवा ह्य् एताः श्रुताः पापं हरन्ति याः गोदावरीभीमरथीकृष्णवेण्यादिकास् तथा
These arise from the foot of Ṛkṣa, and are renowned for removing sin: Godāvarī, Bhīma, Rathī, Kṛṣṇā, Veṇī, and others likewise.
सह्यपादोद्भवा नद्यः स्मृताः पापभयापहाः कृतमालाताम्रपर्णीप्रमुखा मलयोद्भवाः
The rivers arising from the Sahya mountains are remembered as removing sin and fear; foremost among them are the Kṛtamālā and Tāmraparṇī, originating from the Malaya range.
त्रिसांध्यर्षिकुल्याद्यामहेन्द्रप्रभवाः स्मृताः ऋषिकुल्याकुमाराद्याः शुक्तिमत्पादसंभवाः
The rivers such as the Ṛṣikulyā, Kumārā, and others, arising from the Mahendra mountain, are remembered; those like Ṛṣikulyā and Kumārā originate from the Śuktimat mountain.
आसां नद्युपनद्यश् च सन्त्य् अन्यास् तु सहस्रशः तास्व् इमे कुरुपञ्चालमध्यदेशादयो जनाः
Among these rivers and their tributaries, there are thousands more; in their regions dwell people of Kurus, Pañcālas, and the central lands.
पूर्वदेशादिकाश् चैव कामरूपनिवासिनः पौण्ड्राः कलिङ्गा मगधा दाक्षिणात्याश् च सर्वशः
Likewise, those residing in the eastern regions, Kāmarūpa, Pauṇḍra, Kaliṅga, Magadha, and all the southern lands.
तथा परान्त्याः सौराष्ट्राः शूद्राभीरास् तथार्बुदाः मारुका मालवाश् चैव पारियात्रनिवासिनः
Similarly, the Saurāṣṭras, Śūdras, Ābhīras, Arbudas, Mārukas, Mālavas, and those dwelling in the Pāriyātra region.
सौवीराः सैन्धवापन्नाः शाल्वाः शाकलवासिनः मद्रारामास् तथाम्बष्ठाः पारसीकादयस् तथा
The Sauvīras, Saindhavas, Śālvas, those residing in Śākala, Madras, Rāmas, Ambaṣṭhas, and likewise the Pārasīkas and others.
