They say the unmanifest is indivisible, possessing the nature of creation and dissolution. Creation and dissolution are thus spoken of, and the twentieth is knowledge and ignorance.
Knowledge is of each other; understand this in due order, as declared by the sages, O dear one, as a further illustration of Sāṃkhya.
Of all the organs of action, knowledge is said to be the organ of intellect; likewise, of the sense organs, their distinctions have been taught to us.
The wise declare that the mind is the knowledge of the objects of the senses; the five elements are said to be the knowledge of the mind.
Indeed, ego is of the five elements—there is no doubt here. Ego is likewise knowledge, and intellect is knowledge, O lord of men.
By intellect, nature is unmanifest, the supreme among principles, O best of men. Knowledge is to be understood, and the supreme order is remembered.
The unmanifest is called the inferior; knowledge is indeed the twenty-fifth. All is said to be everything of all, the one who has crossed beyond knowledge and the known.
Knowledge is said to be unmanifest; the knowable is indeed the twenty-fifth. Likewise, knowledge is unmanifest, and the knower is the twenty-fifth.
Now, in particular, I have spoken to you truly about knowledge and ignorance; listen to what is called the imperishable and the perishable.
Both these are said to be perishable, and both these are imperishable; I will explain the cause, as it is known through knowledge and ignorance.
Both these are considered beginningless and endless lords; both are called by the name of principle by those who contemplate knowledge.
Because it possesses the nature of creation and dissolution, the unmanifest is called imperishable; it repeatedly transforms for the production of qualities.
Of the qualities, beginning with the great one, they mutually arise; this, they say, is the substratum, the field, and is the twenty-fifth.
That which is the inner web of qualities is gathered into the manifest self; that, with those qualities, is dissolved into the twenty-fifth.
The qualities merge into the qualities; then only primordial nature remains. The knower of the field, too, is drawn along to that extent.
When primordial nature, called the qualities, attains the imperishable, then, due to the transformation of the qualities in the body, there is indeed freedom from qualities.
In the same way, the knower of the field, when knowledge of the field is exhausted, is by nature free from qualities—so we have heard.
This one becomes perishable when endowed with qualities among the qualities; but when he knows primordial nature, he likewise knows his own freedom from qualities.
Thus, by renouncing primordial nature, he becomes pure; when the wise one realizes, 'I am other, this is other,'
Then he attains unshakable peace and does not fall into mixture. By nature, O king, this one appears mixed with another.
But when he shuns that web of qualities born of nature and sees the supreme, seeing thus, does he then still create involvement?
What have I done, who have been submerged in time? Just as a fish, by its own knowledge, follows the water,
So I, out of delusion, have followed one after another, person after person, just as a fish, knowing water, follows it here.
A fish, out of ignorance, does not consider other water as different; so, out of ignorance, I do not know myself or another.
Shame on me, of misguided mind, who, submerged, have again followed, out of delusion, one after another, person after person.
This companion experiences destruction with me; having attained sameness and unity, as he is, so am I.
Here I see equality; I am indeed like him. He is clearly pure; I am also like that.
I, through ignorance and delusion, have acted ignorantly; by association and excessive association, I have remained in this condition for this time.
Thus, overpowered, I did not realize this time passing. How shall I escape the states of superior, inferior, and middling?
How can I, through equal illusion, continue cohabitation here, being unawakened? Now, become steadfast here.
